On the semiclassical treatment of anharmonic quantum oscillators via coherent states - the Toda chain revisited

Abstract

We use coherent states as a time-dependent variational ansatz for a semiclassical treatment of the dynamics of anharmonic quantum oscillators. In this approach the square variance of the Hamiltonian within coherent states is of particular interest. This quantity turns out to have a natural interpretation with respect to time-dependent solutions of the semiclassical equations of motion. Moreover, our approach allows for an estimate of the decoherence time of a classical object due to quantum fluctuations. We illustrate our findings with the example of the Toda chain.

Semiclassical description of Heisenberg models via spin-coherent states

John Schliemann, Franz G Mertens

We use spin-coherent states as the basis of a time-dependent variational ansatz for a semiclassical description of a large family of Heisenberg models. In addition to following common approaches we also evaluate the square variance of the Hamiltonian in terms of coherent states. This quantity turns out to have a natural interpretation with respect to time-dependent solutions of the equations of motion and allows an estimate of quantum fluctuations in a semiclassical regime to be made. The general results are applied to solitons, instantons and vortices in several one- and two-dimensional models.

A semiclassical approximation to quantum dynamics

Yitzhak Weissman, Joshua Jortner

In this paper we advance a new approximation scheme for the dynamics of an N particle system, which is based on the expansion of the Heisenberg equations of motion in powers of h/ in the coherent state representation. The time evolution of the physical observables is generated classically by a Hamiltonian Hs, which is derived from the original Hamiltonian by adding 2N2 virtual particles to the system. These virtual particles are related to the dispersion of the quantum mechanical wave function, and reflect the (time dependent) sensitivity of the instantaneous positions and momenta xi, pi to the variation of the initial conditions. The approximate equations of motion preserve the commutation relations between the coordinates and the momenta and the total (quantum) energy. The present approximation may be adequate for the study of the dynamics of coupled anharmonic oscillators in the quasiperiodic regime.

Decoherence in an anharmonic oscillator coupled to a thermal environment: A semiclassical forward-backward approach

Yossi Elran, Paul W. Brumer

The decoherence of an anharmonic oscillator in a thermal harmonic bath is examined via a semiclassical approach. A computational strategy is presented and exploited to calculate the time dependence of the purity and the decay of individual matrix elements in the energy representation for a variety of initial states. The time dependence of the decoherence is found to depend on the temperature of the bath, the coupling strength, the initial state of the oscillator, and the choice of quantity measuring the decoherence. Recurrences in the purity and in the off-diagonal matrix elements are observed, as well as the collapse of these matrix elements to the diagonal, providing evidence for the retention of quantum coherence for time scales longer than that indicated by the purity. The results are used to analyze the utility of the Caldeira-Leggett and Redfield models of decoherence and to assess the dependence of dephasing rates on the degree of structure in phase space. In several cases we find that the dephasing dynamics can be described as an initial Zeno-effect regime, followed by a Caldeira-Leggett region, followed by recurrences.

Analytic solution for the dissipative anharmonic quantum oscillator and semiclassical analysis

Franz X. Kärtner, Axel Schenzle

The analytic solution of the time evolution of a dissipative nonlinear quantum oscillator in the generalized s-ordered representation is derived. The analytical solution allows for comparsion of the various representations with the classical and semiclassical dynamics. It is shown by the eigenvalue analysis of the evolution operators that in the case of a small nonlinearity a semiclassical analysis is an excellent approximation to the exact quantum dynamics. This is further demonstrated by using the Green's function of the anharmonic oscillator to solve the initial-value problem for a superposition of coherent states.

Quantum dynamics for weakly anharmonic systems from genuinely classical trajectories

I. E. Mazets, Norbert J. Mauser

Abstract We present a new approach to the treatment of the dispersion of a quantum wave packet in a weakly anharmonic multidimensional potential. It assumes mapping of the quantum problem on its classical counterpart, the latter being solvable, by assumption, in the action-angle variables. The semiclassical quantization of the action variables allows us to construct a special class of quantum states that we dub scrambled coherent states. These states provide the possibility to compute the observables and their correlations with a fair accuracy, also at times when the dispersion of a wave packet due to the anharmonicity of the potential becomes dominant. The numerical estimation of the coefficients determining the scrambled coherent dynamics is of polynomial complexity and thus opens the way to avoid the ‘curse of dimensionality’.

Instantaneous and dynamical decoherence

János Polonyi

Abstract Two manifestations of decoherence, called instantaneous and dynamical, are investigated. The former reflects the suppression of the interference between the components of the current state while the latter reflects that within the initial state. These types of decoherence are computed in the case of the Brownian motion and the harmonic and anharmonic oscillators within the semiclassical approximation. A remarkable phenomenon, namely the opposite orientation of the time arrow of the dynamical variables compared to that of the quantum fluctuations generates a double exponential time dependence of the dynamical decoherence in the presence of a harmonic force. For the weakly anharmonic oscillator the dynamical decoherence is found to depend in a singular way on the amount of the anharmonicity.
