Hubbard chain with a Kondo impurity

Abstract

A Bethe ansatz solution of a (modified) Hubbard chain with a Kondo impurity of arbitrary spin S at a highly symmetric line of parameter space is proposed and explored. Our results confirm the existence of a strong-coupling (line of) fixed-point(s) with ferromagnetic Kondo coupling as first hypothetized by Furusaki and Nagaosa on the basis of perturbative renormalization group calculations. For on-site Hubbard repulsion and ferromagnetic Kondo exchange, the ground state has spin S − 1/2, i.e. , is a singlet when S = 1/2. The contributions of the impurity to the magnetic susceptibility and low-temperature specific heat are discussed. While the Wilson ratio is unity in the half-filled band, it is found to be a function of density and interaction away from half-filling.

Kondo effect in XXZ spin chains

Akira Furusaki, Takashi Hikihara

The Kondo effect in a one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $\mathrm{XXZ}$ model in the gapless $\mathrm{XY}$ regime $(\ensuremath{-}1<\ensuremath{\Delta}<~1)$ is studied both analytically and numerically. In our model an impurity spin $(S=1/2)$ is coupled to a single spin in the $\mathrm{XXZ}$ spin chain. Perturbative renormalization-group (RG) analysis is performed for various limiting cases to deduce low-energy fixed points. It is shown that in the ground state the impurity spin is screened by forming a singlet with a spin in the host $\mathrm{XXZ}$ chain. In the antiferromagnetic side $(0<\ensuremath{\Delta}<~1)$ the host chain is cut into two semi-infinite chains by the singlet. In the ferromagnetic side $(\ensuremath{-}1<\ensuremath{\Delta}<0),$ on the other hand, the host $\mathrm{XXZ}$ chain remains as a single chain through ``healing'' of a weakened bond in the low-energy (long-distance) limit. The density-matrix renormalization-group method is used to study the size scaling of finite-size energy gaps and the power-law decay of correlation functions in the ground state. The numerical results are in good agreement with the predictions of the RG analysis. Low-temperature behaviors of specific heat and susceptibility are also discussed.

Scalar-potential effect in an integrable Kondo model

Yupeng Wang, Ulrich Eckern

To study the impurity potential effect to the Kondo problem in a Luttinger liquid, we propose an integrable model of two interacting half-chains coupled with a single magnetic impurity ferromagnetically. It is shown that the scalar potential effectively reconciles the spin dynamics at low temperatures. Generally, there is a competition between the Kondo coupling J and the impurity potential V. When the ferromagnetic Kondo coupling dominates over the impurity potential $(V<|\mathrm{SJ}|),$ the Furusaki-Nagaosa many-body singlet can be perfectly realized. However, when the impurity potential dominates over the Kondo coupling $(V>~|\mathrm{SJ}|),$ the fixed point predicted by Furusaki and Nagaosa is unstable and the system must flow to a weak-coupling fixed point. It is also found that the effective moment of the impurity measured from the susceptibility is considerably enlarged by the impurity potential. In addition, some quantum phase transitions driven by the impurity potential are found and the anomaly residual entropy is discussed.

The Kondo impurity in the large spin limit

Abijith Krishnan, Max A. Metlitski

The Kondo problem, which describes the interaction of a spin $s$ magnetic impurity with a free Fermi gas, is a classic example of strongly coupled physics. Historically, the problem has been solved by Wilson's numerical renormalization group and later by Bethe ansatz. In this paper, we present an alternate analytic solution of the Kondo problem that combines an expansion in $1/s$ with the renormalization group. We study both the case of an impurity interacting with a single channel $K=1$ of fermions in the $s \rightarrow \infty$ limit and the case with $K$ channels in the double-scaling limit $K \rightarrow \infty$, $s \to \infty$, $K/s$ fixed. Our approach allows us to describe analytically intermediate scales of the Kondo problem at large $s$ and compute thermodynamic observables such as the impurity entropy and susceptibility. We find these observables to agree with the Bethe ansatz results. We also compute the impurity spectral function, finite temperature resistivity and the Kondo screening cloud profile, properties that are not easily accessible from Bethe ansatz. Notably, in the regime $K > 2s$ we access the "non-Fermi-liquid" overscreened fixed point of the multichannel Kondo problem.

Symmetric single-impurity Kondo model on a tight-binding chain: Comparison of analytical and numerical ground-state approaches

Gergely Barcza, Kevin Bauerbach, Fabian Eickhoff +3 more

The Kondo model describes a magnetic impurity in a metallic host. Here, the authors use variational approaches (Lanczos, Yosida, Gutzwiller) and quasi-exact numerical techniques (numerical renormalization group, density matrix renormalization group) to study the ground-state energy and magnetization, and compare these properties to Bethe ansatz results. The Gutzwiller wave function is an excellent trial state for strong coupling. For weak coupling, the numerical renormalization group gives the best description of the magnetic properties. A combination of Bethe ansatz and perturbation theory provides new benchmark results for the zero-field susceptibility.

An Exactly Solvable Kondo Problem for Interacting One-Dimensional Fermions

Yupeng Wang, Johannes Voit

The single impurity Kondo problem in the one-dimensional $\ensuremath{\delta}$-potential Fermi gas is exactly solved for two sets of special coupling constants via Bethe ansatz. It is found that ferromagnetic Kondo screening does occur in one case which confirms the Furusaki-Nagaosa conjecture while in the other case it does not, which we explain in a simple physical picture. Exact expressions for the surface energy, the low temperature specific heat and the Pauli susceptibility induced by the impurity, and the Kondo temperature are derived.

Two magnetic impurities in a spin chain

Zhan-Ning Hu, Fu‐Cho Pu

In this paper, the Kondo magnetic effect is studied for the $\mathrm{XXZ}$ spin chain where the impurities are coupled to the edges of the system. The Hamiltonian of our model can be constructed from the transfer matrix. It is exactly solvable and the exchange constants between the bulk and the boundary impurities are arbitrary. The finite-size corrections to the ground-state energy are obtained for the magnetic impurities and the boundary condition. The specific heat and the susceptibility contributed by the impurities are derived and the Kondo temperature is given explicitly by the use of the Luttinger-Fermi liquid picture and the Bethe ansatz method.
