Excitation spectrum of the S=1/2 quantum spin ladder with frustration: Elementary quasiparticles and many-particle bound states

Abstract

The excitation spectrum of the two-chain $S=1/2$ Heisenberg spin ladder with additional second neighbor frustrating interactions is studied by a variety of techniques. A description, based on a mapping of the model onto a Bose gas of hard-core triplets is used to determine the one- and two-particle excitation spectra. We find that low-lying singlet and triplet bound states are present and their binding energy increases with increasing frustration. In addition, many-particle bound states are found by exact diagonalization and variational methods. We prove that the larger the number of bound particles the larger the binding energy. Thus the excitation spectrum has a complex structure and consists of elementary triplets and composite many-particle singlet and triplet bound states. The composite excitations mix strongly with the elementary ones in the coupling regime where quantum fluctuations are strong. The quantum phase transition, known to take place in this model at critical frustration, is interpreted as a condensation process of (infinitely) large many-particle bound states.

Spectrum of elementary and collective excitations in the dimerized S=1/2 Heisenberg chain with frustration

Pavel V. Shevchenko, Valeri N. Kotov, Oleg P. Sushkov

We have studied the low-energy excitation spectrum of a dimerized and frustrated antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. We use an analytic approach, based on a description of the excitations as triplets above a strong-coupling singlet ground state. The quasiparticle spectrum is calculated by treating the excitations as a dilute Bose gas with infinite on-site repulsion. Additional singlet $(S=0)$ and triplet $(S=1)$ modes are found as two-particle bound states of the elementary triplets. We have also calculated the contributions of the elementary and collective excitations into the spin structure factor. Our results are in excellent agreement with exact diagonalizations and dimer series expansions data as long as the dimerization parameter \ensuremath{\delta} is not too small $(\ensuremath{\delta}>0.1),$ i.e., while the elementary triplets can be treated as localized objects.

Bound States of Magnons in the S=1/2 Quantum Spin Ladder

Oleg P. Sushkov, Valeri N. Kotov

The excitation spectrum of the two-chain Heisenberg ladder with antiferromagnetic interactions is studied. Our approach is based on the description of the excitations as triplets above a strong-coupling singlet ground state. The quasiparticle spectrum is calculated by treating the excitations as a dilute Bose gas with infinite on-site repulsion. Additional singlet ( $S\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0$) and triplet ( $S\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1$) excitations are found as quasiparticle bound states. Thus it is demonstrated that the spectrum consists of one elementary triplet, one composite triplet, and one composite singlet.

Multi-triplet bound states and finite-temperature dynamics in highly frustrated quantum spin ladders

A. Honecker, Frédéric Mila, Bruce Normand

Low-dimensional quantum magnets at finite temperatures present a complex interplay of quantum and thermal fluctuation effects in a restricted phase space. While some information about dynamical response functions is available from theoretical studies of the one-triplet dispersion in unfrustrated chains and ladders, little is known about the finite-temperature dynamics of frustrated systems. Experimentally, inelastic neutron scattering studies of the highly frustrated two-dimensional material ${\mathrm{SrCu}}_{2}{({\mathrm{BO}}_{3})}_{2}$ show an almost complete destruction of the one-triplet excitation band at a temperature only 1/3 of its gap energy, accompanied by strong scattering intensities for apparent multi-triplet excitations. We investigate these questions in the frustrated spin ladder and present numerical results from exact diagonalization for the dynamical structure factor as a function of temperature. We find anomalously rapid transfer of spectral weight out of the one-triplet band and into both broad and sharp spectral features at a wide range of energies, including below the zero-temperature gap of this excitation. These features are multi-triplet bound states, which develop particularly strongly near the quantum phase transition, fall to particularly low energies there, and persist all the way to infinite temperature. Our results offer valuable insight into the physics of finite-temperature spectral functions in ${\mathrm{SrCu}}_{2}{({\mathrm{BO}}_{3})}_{2}$ and many other highly frustrated spin systems.

Quantum spin ladder with dynamic phonons: Bound states of magnons and phonons

Oleg P. Sushkov

We consider the two-chain Heisenberg ladder with antiferromagnetic interactions. Our approach is based on the description of spin excitations as triplets above a strong-coupling singlet ground state. It is shown that interaction with dynamic phonons drastically changes the dispersion of the elementary triplet excitation (magnon) and the spin structure factor. It is also shown that a different triplet excitation appears in the spectrum: the bound state of a magnon and a phonon.

BOUND STATES IN DIMERIZED AND FRUSTRATED HEISENBERG CHAINS

G. Bouzerar, S. SIL

Using the Bond-Operator Technique (BOT), we have studied the low energy excitation spectrum of a frustrated dimerized antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. In particular, we have compared our analytical results with previous Exact Diagonalization (ED) data. Qualitatively, the BOT results are in good agreement with the ED data. And even a very good quantitative agreement is obtained in some parameter region. It is clearly shown that there is only one elementary excitation branch (lowest triplet branch) and that the two other well defined excitations which appear below the continuum, one singlet and one triplet, are bound states of two elementary triplets.

Thermodynamic properties of highly frustrated quantum spin ladders: Influence of many-particle bound states

A. Honecker, Stefan Weßel, René John Kerkdyk +3 more

Quantum antiferromagnets have proven to be some of the cleanest realizations available for theoretical, numerical, and experimental studies of quantum fluctuation effects. At finite temperatures, however, the additional effects of thermal fluctuations in the restricted phase space of a low-dimensional system have received much less attention, particularly the situation in frustrated quantum magnets, where the excitations may be complex collective (bound or even fractionalized) modes. We investigate this problem by studying the thermodynamic properties of the frustrated two-leg $S=\frac{1}{2}$ spin ladder, with particular emphasis on the fully frustrated case. We present numerical results for the magnetic specific heat and susceptibility, obtained from exact diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo studies, which we show can be rendered free of the sign problem even in a strongly frustrated system and which allow us to reach unprecedented sizes of $L=200$ ladder rungs. We find that frustration effects cause an unconventional evolution of the thermodynamic response across the full parameter regime of the model. However, close to the first-order transition they cause a highly anomalous reduction in temperature scales with no concomitant changes in the gap; the specific heat shows a very narrow peak at very low energies and the susceptibility rises abruptly at extremely low temperatures. Unusually, the two quantities have different gaps over an extended region of the parameter space. We demonstrate that these results reflect the presence of large numbers of multiparticle bound-state excitations, whose energies fall below the one-triplon gap in the transition region.
