Elementary Excitations in Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensed Gases Beyond the Mean-Field Approximation

Abstract

Using the hydrodynamic theory of superfluids and the Lee-Huang-Yang equation of state for interacting Bose gases, we derive the first correction to the collective frequencies of a trapped gas, due to effects beyond the mean field approximation. The corresponding frequency shift, which is calculated at zero temperature and for large $N$, is compared with other corrections due to finite size, nonlinearity, and temperature. We show that for reasonable choices of the relevant parameters of the system, the non-mean-field correction is the leading contribution and amounts to about $1%$. The role of the deformation of the trap is also discussed.

Collective oscillations in trapped Bose-Einstein-condensed gases in the presence of weak disorder

G. M. Falco, Axel Pelster, R. Graham

The influence of a weak random potential on the collective modes of a trapped interacting Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature is calculated in the limit when the correlation length of the disorder is smaller than the healing length of the superfluid. The problem is solved in the Thomas-Fermi limit by generalizing the superfluid hydrodynamic equations to allow for the presence of weak disorder. We find that the disorder-induced frequency shifts of the low-energy excitations can be of the same order of magnitude as the beyond mean-field corrections in the normal interaction recently observed experimentally.

Collective oscillations of a one-dimensional trapped Bose-Einstein gas

Chiara Menotti, S. Stringari

Starting from the hydrodynamic equations of superfluids, we calculate the frequencies of the collective oscillations of a harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein gas for various one-dimensional configurations at zero temperature. These include the mean-field regime described by Gross-Pitaevskii theory and the beyond-mean-field regime at small densities described by the Lieb-Liniger theory. The relevant combinations of the physical parameters governing the transition between the different regimes as well as the conditions of applicability of the hydrodynamic equations are discussed.

Collective modes of trapped superfluid Fermi gases in the BCS-BEC crossover beyond the mean-field approximation

Siqin Cao, Yong-li Ma, Guoxiang Huang

A perturbation method is developed for calculating the oscillating frequencies of collective modes of trapped superfluid Fermi gases from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). Based on the complete and orthogonal eigenfunction set obtained recently and a series expansion of the equation of state beyond the mean-field approximation, the corrections of eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions of all collective modes are given systematically, which are valid for various superfluid regimes in the BCS-BEC crossover beyond the mean-field approximation. Expressions of frequency correction of the collective modes for both spherical and axial symmetric traps excited near the BCS, BEC, and unitarity limits are provided explicitly, and their dependence on interatomic interaction strength and anisotropic trapping parameter is also discussed in detail.

Excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates at finite temperatures

Martin Rusch, Rusch, Martin

Recent experimental observations of collective excitations of Bose condensed atomic vapours have stimulated interest in the microscopic description of the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in an external potential. We present a finite temperature field theory for collective excitations of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates and use a finite-temperature linear response formalism, which goes beyond the simple mean-field approximation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The effect of the non-condensed thermal atoms we include using perturbation theory in a quasiparticle basis. This presents a simple scheme to understand the interaction between condensate and non-condensed atoms and enables us to include the effect the condensate has on collision dynamics. At first we limit our treatment to the case of a spatially homogeneous Bose gas. We include the effect of pair and triplet anomalous averages and thus obtain a gapless theory for the excitations of a weakly interacting system, which we can link to well known results for Landau and Beliaev damping rates. A gapless theory for trapped systems with a static thermal component follows straightforwardly. We then investigate finite temperature excitations of a condensate in a spherically symmetric harmonic trap. We avoid approximations to the density of states and thus emphasise finite size aspects of the problem. We show that excitations couple strongly to a restricted number of modes, giving rise to resonance structure in their frequency spectra. Where possible we derive energy shifts and lifetimes of excitations. For one particular mode, the breathing mode, the effects of the discreteness of the system are sufficiently pronounced that the simple picture of an energy shift and width fails. Experiments in spherical traps have recently become feasible and should be able to test our detailed quantitative predictions.

Hydrodynamic collective modes for cold trapped gases

Igor Boettcher, S Floerchinger, CHRISTOF WETTERICH

We suggest that collective oscillation frequencies of cold trapped gases can be used to test predictions from quantum many-body physics. Our motivation lies in both rigid experimental tests of theoretical calculations and a possible improvement of measurements of particle number, chemical potential or temperature. We calculate the effects of interaction, dimensionality and thermal fluctuations on the collective modes of a dilute Bose gas in the hydrodynamic limit. The underlying equation of state is provided by the non-perturbative Functional Renormalization Group or by Lee–Yang theory. The spectrum of oscillation frequencies could be measured by response techniques. Our findings are generalized to bosonic or fermionic quantum gases with an arbitrary equation of state in the two-fluid hydrodynamic regime. For any given equation of state P (μ, T ) and normal fluid density n n (μ, T ), the collective oscillation frequencies in a d -dimensional isotropic potential are found to be the eigenvalues of an ordinary differential operator. We suggest a method of numerical solution and discuss the zero-temperature limit. Exact results are provided for harmonic traps and certain special forms of the equation of state. We also present a phenomenological treatment of dissipation effects and discuss the possibility of exciting the different eigenmodes individually.

Gapless Finite- T Theory of Collective Modes of a Trapped Gas

David A. W. Hutchinson, R. J. Dodd, Keith R. Burnett

We present predictions for the frequencies of collective modes of trapped Bose-condensed ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms at finite temperature. Our treatment includes a self-consistent treatment of the effects upon the mean field from finite- $T$ excitations and the anomalous average. This is the first gapless [A. Griffin, Phys. Rev. B 53, 9341 (1996)] calculation of this type for a trapped Bose-Einstein condensed gas. The corrections quantitatively account for the downward shift in the $m\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}2$ excitation frequencies observed in recent experiments as the critical temperature is approached.
