Metal-insulator transition in the two-chain model of correlated fermions

arXivHTMLPDF

Abstract

The doping-induced metal-insulator transition in two-chain systems of correlated fermions is studied using a solvable limit of the $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model and the fact that various strong- and weak-coupling limits of the two-chain model are in the same phase, i.e., have the same low-energy properties. It is shown that the Luttinger-liquid parameter ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$ takes the universal value unity as the insulating state (half-filling) is approached, implying dominant $d$-type superconducting fluctuations, independently of the interaction strength. The crossover to insulating behavior of correlations as the transition is approached is discussed.

η -pairing superconductivity in the Hubbard chain with pair hopping

G. I. Japaridze, A. P. Kampf, Michael Sekania +2 more

The ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional Hubbard chain with pair-hopping interaction is studied. The analysis of the model is performed using the continuum-limit field theory approach and exact diagonalization studies. At half-filling the phase diagram is shown to consist of two superconducting states with Cooper-pair center-of-mass momentum $Q=0 (\mathrm{BCS}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{0}$ phase) and $Q=\ensuremath{\pi} ({\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}$ phase) and four insulating phases corresponding to the Mott antiferromagnet, the Peierls dimerized phase, the charge-density-wave (CDW) insulator, and an unconventional insulating phase characterized by the coexistence of a CDW and a bond-located staggered magnetization. Away from half-filling the phase diagram consists of the superconducting $\mathrm{BCS}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{0}$ and ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}$ phases and the metallic Luttinger-liquid phase. The $\mathrm{BCS}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{0}$ phase exhibits a smooth crossover from a weak-coupling BCS type to a strong-coupling local-pair regime. The ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}$ phase shows the properties of the doublon (zero-size Cooper-pair) superconductor with Cooper-pair center-of-mass momentum $Q=\ensuremath{\pi}.$ The transition into the ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}$-paired state corresponds to an abrupt change in the ground-state structure. After the transition the conduction band is completely destroyed and a new ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}$-pair band, corresponding to the strongly correlated doublon motion, is created.

Metal-insulator phase transition in an exactly solvable model of nondegenerate interacting fermion chains

Igor N. Karnaukhov

A two parametric family of the models of two coupled nondegenerate fermion chains is proposed and solved by the means of the Bethe ansatz. We give a detailed analysis of the exact zero-temperature phase diagram at half filling for different parameters of the interactions. It is shown that insulator and ``interchain ferromagnetic'' phase states are separated by ``intermediate metallic'' state, these phase states coexist in a tricritical point. The critical fluctuations are described by a conformal field theory with the central charge $c=1$. In the tricritical point the fermion state is described as a Luttinger liquid state with one gapless mode that is characterized by abnormal large density-density correlations and correlations of the momentum distribution function.

The metal-insulator transition in one dimension

Heinz J. Schulz

The low--energy excited states of a system of interacting one--dimensional fermions in a conducting state are collective charge and spin density oscillations. The unusual physical properties of such a system (called ``Luttinger liquid'') are characterized by the velocities $u_ρ$ and $u_σ$ of the charge and spin excitations, as well as by a parameter $K_ρ$ that determines the power law behavior of correlation functions. Umklapp scattering occuring at half--filling or other commensurate bandfilling can lead to a transition into an insulating state, characterized in particular by a gap in the charge excitations (the Mott--Hubbard gap). The properties in the vicinity of the transition are shown to depend on both the way the transition is approached (constant bandfilling and varying interaction, or constant interaction and varying bandfilling) and on the ``order'' of the commensurability. In particular, even and odd fractional fillings show quite different behavior. This behavior is illustrated in detail using lattice models like the Hubbard model and its extensions.

Phases of the two-band model of spinless fermions in one dimension

Urs Ledermann, Karyn Le Hur

We study the two-band model of spinless fermions in one dimension for weak repulsive interactions. In this case, the model is equivalent to the weakly interacting spinless two-leg ladder. We obtain nonuniversal analytic expressions for the power-law decays $\ensuremath{\propto}{x}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ of the charge-density and $\ensuremath{\propto}{x}^{\ensuremath{-}1/\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ of the superconducting pairing correlation functions. To leading order in the doping $\ensuremath{\delta}$ away from half filling and ${t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}/t,$ we find $\ensuremath{\gamma}=1+({\ensuremath{\pi}}^{2}{/8)(t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}{/t)}^{2}{\ensuremath{\delta}}^{2}$ $(t$ and ${t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ are the hopping terms along and between the chains), such that superconducting pairing correlations dominate. We furthermore show that the transition from the superconducting phase to the usual one-dimensional (Luttinger) metal occurs via a mixed phase, where superconducting pairs are formed in the bonding band only. We give the phase diagram as a function of temperature and doping.

Superconductivity from doping a spin-liquid insulator: A simple one-dimensional example

Michele Fabrizio

We study the phase diagram of a one-dimensional Hubbard model where, in addition to the standard nearest-neighbor hopping t, we also include a next-to-nearest-neighbor hopping ${\mathit{t}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$. For strong enough on-site repulsion, this model has a transition at half filling from a magnetic insulator with gapless spin excitations at small ${\mathit{t}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$/t to a dimerized insulator with a spin gap at larger ${\mathit{t}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$/t. We show that upon doping this model exhibits quite interesting features, which include the presence of a metallic phase with a spin gap and dominant superconducting fluctuations, in spite of the repulsive interaction. More interestingly, we find that this superconducting phase can be reached upon hole doping the magnetic insulator. The connections between this model and the two chain models, recently object of intensive investigations, are also discussed. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Dimensional crossover in half-filled and lightly dopedN-leg Hubbard ladders

Urs Ledermann

We study the dimensional crossover from one to two dimensions in half-filled and lightly doped, weakly interacting N-leg Hubbard ladders. In this case, the Hubbard ladders are equivalent to an N-band model. Using renormalization-group techniques, we find that the half-filled ladders exhibit (in the spin sector) an odd-even effect only below a crossover energy ${E}_{c}\ensuremath{\propto}\mathrm{exp}[\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}\mathrm{exp}(\ensuremath{\gamma}N)]$ $(\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\ll}1$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\sim}1$ depend on the interaction strength and on the hopping matrix elements): Below ${E}_{c},$ the dominant interactions take place within band pairs $(j,N+1\ensuremath{-}j)$ [and within the band $(N+1)/2$ for N odd], such that even-leg ladders are an insulating spin liquid, while odd-leg ladders have one gapless spinon mode. In contrast, above the energy scale ${E}_{c},$ all bands are interacting with each other and the system is a two-dimensional- (2D)-like (insulating) antiferromagnet; we obtain an analytical expression for the Hamiltonian which is similar to the 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Bosonization techniques show that in the charge sector the Mott insulator is as well below and above ${E}_{c}$ of the same type as in $N/2$ half-filled two-leg ladders. Doping away from half-filling, we find that the effect of an increasing doping $\ensuremath{\delta}$ is very similar to decreasing the number of legs N: In both cases interactions between unpaired bands are suppressed and thereby the antiferromagnetic correlations reduced. The resulting band pairs form then insulating spin liquids and when doped, there is a spin gap, but phase coherence exists only within the band pairs. At higher doping levels ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}={\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}(N),$ phase coherence between all band pairs sets in and the system becomes a 2D-like d-wave superconductor $[{\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}(N)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ for $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{N}\ensuremath{\infty}].$
