Superconductivity from doping a spin-liquid insulator: A simple one-dimensional example

Abstract

We study the phase diagram of a one-dimensional Hubbard model where, in addition to the standard nearest-neighbor hopping t, we also include a next-to-nearest-neighbor hopping ${\mathit{t}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$. For strong enough on-site repulsion, this model has a transition at half filling from a magnetic insulator with gapless spin excitations at small ${\mathit{t}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$/t to a dimerized insulator with a spin gap at larger ${\mathit{t}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$/t. We show that upon doping this model exhibits quite interesting features, which include the presence of a metallic phase with a spin gap and dominant superconducting fluctuations, in spite of the repulsive interaction. More interestingly, we find that this superconducting phase can be reached upon hole doping the magnetic insulator. The connections between this model and the two chain models, recently object of intensive investigations, are also discussed. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Phase diagram of the half-filled Hubbard chain with next-nearest-neighbor hopping

S. Daul, R. M. Noack

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the half-filled one-dimensional Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping using the density-matrix renormalization-group technique as well as an unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation. We find commensurate and incommensurate disordered magnetic insulating phases and a spin-gapped metallic phase in addition to the one-dimensional Heisenberg phase. At large on-site Coulomb repulsion U, we make contact with the phase diagram of the frustrated Heisenberg chain, which has spin-gapped phases for sufficiently large frustration. For weak U, sufficiently large next-nearest-neighbor hopping ${t}_{2}$ leads to a band structure with four Fermi points rather than two, producing a spin-gapped metallic phase. As U is increased in this regime, the system undergoes a Mott-Hubbard transition to a frustrated antiferromagnetic insulator.

Superconductivity and spin gap in the high-doping regime of a CuO chain model

Anders W. Sandvik, Asle Sudbø

A two-band Hubbard model describing a CuO chain is studied using quantum Monte Carlo simulation. The Luttinger-liquid exponent K ρ is extracted as a function of the nearest-neighbor repulsion V , at hole fillings ⟨ n ⟩ between 1 (half-filled lower band) and 2. Evidence is presented for the existence of a regime with dominant singlet superconducting fluctuations and a gap in the spin excitation spectrum at ⟨ n ⟩ = 1.75, in the neighborhood of the V for which the system phase separates. Closer to half-filling (⟨ n ⟩≲1.6), spin-density-wave fluctuations always dominate.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping

Satoshi Nishimoto, Kazuhiro Sano, Y. Ohta

We study the one-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor hopping integrals by using the density-matrix renormalization group method and Hartree-Fock approximation. Based on the calculated results for the spin gap, total-spin quantum number, and Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid parameter, we determine the ground-state phase diagram of the model in the entire filling and wide parameter region. We show that, in contrast to the weak-coupling regime where a spin-gapped liquid phase is predicted in the region with four Fermi points, the spin gap vanishes in a substantial region in the strong-coupling regime. It is remarkable that a large variety of phases, such as the paramagnetic metallic phase, spin-gapped liquid phase, singlet and triplet superconducting phases, and fully polarized ferromagnetic phase, appear in such a simple model in the strong-coupling regime.

Phase separation and the existence of superconductivity in a one-dimensional copper-oxygen model

Anders W. Sandvik, Asle Sudbø

The phase-separation instability occurring with increasing nearest-neighbor repulsion $V$ in a two-band Hubbard model (CuO chain) is discussed. Quantum Monte Carlo simulations indicate that this transition is strongly discontinuous if the filling fraction $〈n〉$ is close to 1 (half-filled lower band). Spin-density-wave fluctuations then dominate before phase separation. Superconducting fluctuations dominate in the neighborhood of phase separation only at considerably higher doping levels, where the transition to the phase-separated state is much smoother.

Two-dimensional extended Hubbard model: doping, next-nearest neighbor hopping and phase diagrams

A. Sherman

Abstract Using the strong coupling diagram technique, we investigate the extended Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice. This approach allows for charge and spin fluctuations and a short-range antiferromagnetic order at nonzero temperatures. The model features the first-order phase transition to states with alternating site occupations (SAO) at the intersite repulsion v = v c . In this work, we show that doping decreases v c . For a nonzero next-nearest neighbor hopping t ′ , less mobile carriers produce a stronger fall in v c . For half-filling and t ′ = 0 , we consider phase diagrams for a fixed temperature T, on-site U, and intersite repulsions. The diagrams contain regions of SAO, Mott insulator, and several metallic states distinguished by their densities of states. Two of them are characterized by a dip and a peak at the Fermi level. The dip originates from the Slater mechanism for itinerant electrons, while the peak to bound states of electrons with localized magnetic moments. The existence of these two metallic regions in the phase diagram is a manifestation of the Pomeranchuk effect. The boundary between these regions reveals itself as a kink in the curve v c (T) and as a maximum in the T dependence of the double occupancy D. Our calculated D for different values of v, U, and T are in semiquantitative agreement with Monte Carlo results.

Phase diagram of the t−t′−U chain at half filling

M. E. Torio, Armando A. Aligia, Hermenegildo Alejandro Ceccatto

We study the half-filled Hubbard chain including next-nearest-neighbor hopping ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}.$ The model has three phases: one insulating phase with dominant spin-density-wave correlations at large distances (SDWI), another phase with dominant spin-dimer correlations or dimerized insulator (DI), and a third one in which long-distance correlations indicate singlet superconductivity (SS). The boundaries of the SDWI are accurately determined numerically through a crossing of excited energy levels equivalent to the jump in the spin Berry phase. The DI-SS boundary is studied using several indicators such as correlation exponent ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}},$ Drude weight ${D}_{c},$ localization parameter ${z}_{L},$ and charge gap ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{c}.$
