Abstract

The role of the spin-phonon coupling in spin-Peierls chains doped with spin-0 or spin-1 impurities is investigated by various numerical methods such as exact diagonalization, quantum Monte Carlo simulations and Density Matrix Renormalization Group. Various treatments of the lattice, in a fully quantum mechanical way, classically in the adiabatic approximation or using a fixed three-dimensional dimerization pattern are compared. For an isolated chain, strong bonds form between the two spin-1/2 sites next to the impurity site, leading to the appearance of magneto-elastic solitons. We also show that these excitations do not bind to spin-0 impurities but are weakly attracted by spin-1 impurities. However, the interchain elastic coupling generates an effective confining potential at the non-magnetic impurity site which can lead to the formation of soliton-impurity bound states. We also predict that a soliton and an antisoliton bound to two impurities on the same chain can annihilate each other when the separation between the impurities is smaller than a critical value depending on the interchain elastic constant.

Dynamical effects of phonons on soliton binding in quasi-one-dimensional spin–Peierls systems

Abstract The role of dynamical magneto-elastic coupling in spin–Peierls chains is investigated by various numerical techniques. We show that, generically, a Heisenberg spin chain coupled to dynamical optical phonons exhibits a transition towards a spontaneously dimerized state. The low energy excitations are characterized as topological solitons. No binding between solitons occurs in the isolated spin–phonon chain. However, elastic interchain coupling can lead to the formation of bound states.

Low-energy excitations of spin-Peierls chains with modified bond impurities

David Augier, José A. Riera, Didier Poilblanc

The introduction of modified bond defects in spin-Peierls systems is investigated in a model of antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains coupled to adiabatic phonons. Generically, new low-energy magnetic or nonmagnetic excitations appear below the bulk spin gap energy. When two adjacent bonds are modified, these excitations can be interpreted in terms of bound states of a soliton with the localized spin 1/2 located on the impurity site. It is shown that the confining potential occurs even in the case of isolated chains.

Dimerization process and elementary excitations in spin–Peierls chains coupled by frustrated interactions

Diego Mastrogiuseppe, C. J. Gazza, A. Dobry

We consider the ground state and the elementary excitations of an array of spin-Peierls chains coupled by elastic and magnetic interactions. It is expected that the effect of the magnetic interchain coupling will be to reduce the dimerization amplitude and that of the elastic coupling will be to confine the spin one-half solitons corresponding to each isolated chain. We show that this is the case when these interactions are not frustrated. On the other hand, in the frustrated case we show that the amplitude of dimerization in the ground state is independent of the strength of the interchain magnetic interaction in a broad range of values of this parameter. We also show that free solitons could be the elementary excitations when only nearest neighbor interactions are considered. The case of an elastic interchain coupling is analyzed on a general energetic consideration. To study the effect of the magnetic interchain interaction the problem is simplified to a two-leg ladder which is solved using DMRG calculations. We show that the deconfinement mechanism is effective even with a significantly strong antiferromagnetic interchain coupling.

Néel to spin-Peierls transition in a quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg model coupled to bond phonons

Jason C. Pillay, Keola Wierschem, Pinaki Sengupta

The zero and finite temperature spin-Peierls transitions in a quasi-one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model coupled to adiabatic bond phonons is investigated using the stochastic series expansion (SSE) quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method. The quantum phase transition from a gapless N\'eel state to a spin-gapped Peierls state is studied in the parameter space spanned by spatial anisotropy, interchain coupling strength, and spin-lattice coupling strength. It is found that for any finite interchain coupling, the transition to a dimerized Peierls ground state only occurs when the spin-lattice coupling exceeds a finite, nonzero critical value. This is in contrast to the pure 1D model (zero interchain coupling), where adiabatic/classical phonons lead to a dimerized ground state for any nonzero spin-phonon interaction. The phase diagram in the parameter space shows that for a strong interchain coupling, the relation between the interchain coupling and the critical value of the spin-phonon interaction is linear whereas for weak interchain coupling, this behavior is found to have a natural logarithmlike relation. No region was found to have a long range magnetic order and dimerization occurring simultaneously. Instead, the N\'eel state order vanishes simultaneously with the setting in of the spin-Peierls state. For the thermal phase transition, a continuous heat capacity with a peak at the critical temperature ${T}_{c}$ shows a second order phase transition. The variation of the equilibrium bond length distortion ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{eq}$ with temperature showed a power law relation which decayed to zero as the temperature was increased to ${T}_{c}$, indicating a continuous transition from the dimerized phase to a paramagnetic phase with uniform bond length and zero antiferromagnetic susceptibility.

Soliton bound states in the Raman spectrum of pure and doped spin-Peierls chains

David Augier, Erik Schwartz Sørensen, José A. Riera +1 more

We investigate the occurrence of singlet bound states in the Raman spectrum of dimerized spin 1/2 chains by exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization-group techniques. We predict that several bulk $\ensuremath{\delta}$ peaks could be observed in pure systems. Furthermore, we show that additional low-energy lines arise from nonmagnetic impurity doping. These features are interpreted in terms of soliton-antisoliton and soliton-impurity bound states, respectively. Energies and spectral weights associated with these bound states are sensitive to lattice relaxation effects. Our results are discussed in the context of the inorganic spin-Peierls compound ${\mathrm{CuGeO}}_{3}$ and quantitatively compared to recent Raman experiments.
