The role of the spin-phonon coupling in spin-Peierls chains doped with spin-0 or spin-1 impurities is investigated by various numerical methods such as exact diagonalization, quantum Monte Carlo simulations and Density Matrix Renormalization Group. Various treatments of the lattice, in a fully quantum mechanical way, classically in the adiabatic approximation or using a fixed three-dimensional dimerization pattern are compared. For an isolated chain, strong bonds form between the two spin-1/2 sites next to the impurity site, leading to the appearance of magneto-elastic solitons. We also show that these excitations do not bind to spin-0 impurities but are weakly attracted by spin-1 impurities. However, the interchain elastic coupling generates an effective confining potential at the non-magnetic impurity site which can lead to the formation of soliton-impurity bound states. We also predict that a soliton and an antisoliton bound to two impurities on the same chain can annihilate each other when the separation between the impurities is smaller than a critical value depending on the interchain elastic constant.
We study a weakly coupled, frustrated two-leg spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder. For vanishing coupling between the chains, elementary excitations are deconfined, gapless spin-1/2 objects called spinons. We investigate the fate of spinons for the case of a weak interchain interaction. We show that despite a drastic change in ground state, which becomes spontaneously dimerized, spinons survive as elementary excitations but acquire a spectral gap. We furthermore determine the exact dynamical structure factor for several values of momentum transfer.
The role of dynamical magnetoelastic coupling in spin-Peierls chains is investigated by numerical and analytical techniques. We show that a Heisenberg spin chain coupled to dynamical optical phonons exhibits a transition towards a spontaneously dimerized state in a wide range of parameter space. The low-energy excitations are characterized as solitons. No binding between solitons occurs in the isolated spin-phonon chain and the dynamical spin structure factor shows a broad magnon dispersion. However, elastic interchain coupling can lead to the formation of bound states.
Abstract The role of dynamical magneto-elastic coupling in spin–Peierls chains is investigated by various numerical techniques. We show that, generically, a Heisenberg spin chain coupled to dynamical optical phonons exhibits a transition towards a spontaneously dimerized state. The low energy excitations are characterized as topological solitons. No binding between solitons occurs in the isolated spin–phonon chain. However, elastic interchain coupling can lead to the formation of bound states.
The thermodynamics of coupled frustrated ferromagnetic chains is studied within a spin-rotation-invariant Green's-function approach. We consider an isotropic Heisenberg spin-half system with a ferromagnetic in-chain coupling
J1<0 between nearest neighbors and a frustrating antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor in-chain coupling
J2>0. We focus on the moderate strength of frustration
J2<∣J1∣/4 such that the in-chain spin-spin correlations are predominantly ferromagnetic. We consider two interchain couplings (ICs) ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},y}$ and ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},z}$, corresponding to the two axes perpendicular to the chain, where ferromagnetic as well as antiferromagnetic ICs are taken into account. We discuss the influence of frustration on the ground-state properties for antiferromagnetic ICs, where the ground state is of a quantum nature. The major part of our study is devoted to the finite-temperature properties. We calculate the critical temperature
Tc as a function of the competing exchange couplings ${J}_{2},{J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},y},{J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},z}$. We find that for fixed ICs,
Tc decreases monotonically with increasing frustration
J2, where as ${J}_{2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}|{J}_{1}|/4$ the
Tc(J2) curve drops down rapidly. To characterize the magnetic ordering below and above
Tc, we calculate the spin-spin correlation functions $\ensuremath{\langle}{\mathbf{S}}_{0}{\mathbf{S}}_{\mathbf{R}}\ensuremath{\rangle}$, the magnetic order parameter
M, the uniform static susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{0}$, as well as the correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}$. Moreover, we discuss the specific heat
CV and the temperature dependence of the excitation spectrum ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathbf{q}}$. As ${J}_{2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}|{J}_{1}|/4$, some unusual frustration-induced features were found, such as an increase of the in-chain spin stiffness (in the case of ferromagnetic ICs) or of the in-chain spin-wave velocity (in the case of antiferromagnetic ICs) with growing temperature.
