NUMERICAL STUDY OF CHARGE AND STATISTICS OF LAUGHLIN QUASIPARTICLES

Abstract

We present numerical calculations of the charge and statistics, as extracted from Berry phases, of the Laughlin quasiparticles, near filling fraction 1/3, and for system sizes of up to 200 electrons. For the quasiholes our results confirm that the charge and statistics parameter are e/3 and 1/3, respectively. For the quasielectron charge we find a slow convergence towards the expected value of -e/3, with a finite size correction for N electrons of approximately -0.13e/N. The statistics parameter for the quasielectrons has no well defined value even for 200 electrons, but might possibly converge to 1/3. The anyon model works well for the quasiholes, but requires singular two-anyon wave functions for modelling two Laughlin quasielectrons.

CHARGE AND STATISTICS OF QUASIPARTICLES IN FRACTIONAL QUANTUM HALL EFFECT

Banasri Basu, P. BANDYOPADHYAY, S. DHAR

We have studied here the charge and statistics of quasiparticle excitations in FQH states on the basis of the Berry phase approach incorporating the fact that even number of flux quanta can be gauged away when the Berry phase is removed to the dynamical phase. It is observed that the charge q and statistical parameter θ of a quasiparticle at filling factor ν = n/(2pn+1) are given by q = (n/2pn+1)e and θ = n/(2pn+1), with the fact that the charge of the quasihole is opposite to that of the quasielectron. Using Laughlin wave function for quasiparticles, numerical studies have been done following the work of Kjønsberg and Myrheim1 for FQH states at ν = 1/3 and it is pointed out that as in case of quasiholes, the statistics parameter can be well defined for quasielectrons having the value θ = 1/3.

New Trial Wave Functions for Quantum Hall States at Half Filling

Jian Cheng Yang

New trial wave functions corresponding to half filling quantum Hall states are proposed. These wave functions are constructed by first pairing up the quasielectrons of the 1/3 Laughlin quantum Hall state, with the same relative angular momentum for each pair, and then making the paired quasielectrons condense into a 1/4 Laughlin state. The quasiparticle excitations of the proposed wave functions carry $\pm1/4$ of electron charge, and obey Abelian fractional statistics. In the spherical geometry, the total flux quanta $N_ϕ$ is shown to be related to the number of electrons $N$ by $N_ϕ = 2N-(5-q)$ with $q$ being the relative angular momentum between the quasielectrons in each pair which takes values of non-negative even integers. The overlaps are calculated between the proposed trial wave functions, including the ground state, quasiexciton states, and quasihole states, and the exact states of the finite size systems at $N_ϕ = 2N-3$. The near unity overlaps are obtained in the lowest Landau level, while the moderate overlaps are obtained in the second Landau level. The relevance of the wave functions to the yet to be discovered fractional quantum Hall effect in the lowest Landau level, as well as the 5/2 quantum Hall effect is also discussed.

Dynamical and statistical properties of anyons in fractional quantum hall effect

Quang Trung Ha

The quantum Hall effect has been the prototypical example for many emerging fields of Physics, including the study of topological phases of matter, topological order, and topological insulators. The objects of interest in this thesis are anyons, which are elementary excitations in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) fluids. Anyons are quasiparticles with fractional charge and fractional statistics. The latter prop- erty makes it a subject of immense interest due to application in fault-tolerant quantum computing. Here, we employ a perspective that anyons are the appro- priate degree of freedom to describe the relevant physics of FQH systems. This is because when a topological phase is assumed and the energy gap goes to infinity, anyons (“quasiholes”) are the only possible elementary excitations, since they are not energetically punished by the correspondng model Hamiltonian. With respect to a realistic Hamiltonian, however, this choice of degree of freedom depends on the exact effective interaction in the system. For example, while the Laughlin state is the model state at filling factor n + 1/3 (where n is some integer), when the effective electron-electron interaction is more long-ranged, the quasiholes of a Gaffnian state may be excited and become the better degree of freedom to describe physics in the same filling factor. This perspective results in a surprising observa- tion that a Laughlin quasihole may fractionalize under certain conditions, leading to a quasiparticle of charge e/6 that can potentially be detected in experiments. Another important aspect of anyons is their intrinsic spin and the corresponding spin-statistics relation, which must account for the fact that FQH anyons are not point particles, but objects with finite sizes and intricate internal structures. Our investigation leads to a rigorous derivation of the general spin-statistics relation for anyons in Abelian FQH phases. Furthermore, we show it is possible to fully capture the important features of the statistics by a conformal Hilbert space (CHS) description. Our analysis provides the necessary tools to study such geometric effects, which we use to investigate how disorder in a realistic system may affect different experimental schemes for measuring anyon statistics.

Hypernetted-chain approximation and quasiparticle energies in the (1/3 fractional quantized Hall effect

H. A. Fertig, Bertrand I. Halperin

We review some details of the hypernetted-chain (HNC) approximation and its application to the Laughlin quasihole and quasielectron trial wave functions. We then develop a generalized HNC approximation for calculating the three-body correlation function ${g}_{112}$ of a classical plasma with two particle species. We apply this approximation to the Laughlin trial wave functions for the case \ensuremath{\nu}=(1/3 and we estimate their energies. Our quasihole energy is in good agreement with past calculations, but our quasielectron energy is considerably higher than the accepted result. However, the approximation has the correct property that near a quasielectron, the electron pair correlation function vanishes as \ensuremath{\Vert}${\mathrm{r}}_{1}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{r}}_{2}$${\ensuremath{\Vert}}^{2}$ for \ensuremath{\Vert}${\mathrm{r}}_{1}$${\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{r}}_{2}$\ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0, where ${\mathrm{r}}_{1}$ and ${\mathrm{r}}_{2}$ are electron positions. We show that an approximation analogous to Laughlin's pseudopotential approximation does not have this property.

Monte Carlo comparison of quasielectron wave functions

V. Melik-Alaverdian, N. E. Bonesteel

Variational Monte Carlo calculations of the quasielectron and quasihole excitation energies in the fractional quantum Hall effect have been carried out at filling fractions $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/3,$ 1/5, and 1/7. For the quasielectron both the trial wave function originally proposed by Laughlin and the composite-fermion wave function proposed by Jain have been used. We find that for long-range Coulomb interactions the results obtained using these two wave functions are essentially the same, though the energy gap obtained using the composite-fermion quasielectron is slightly smaller, and closer to extrapolated exact-diagonalization results.

Model wave functions for interfaces between lattice Laughlin states

Błażej Jaworowski, Anne E. B. Nielsen

We study the interfaces between lattice Laughlin states at different fillings. We propose a class of model wave functions for such systems constructed using conformal field theory. We find a nontrivial form of charge conservation at the interface, similar to the one encountered in the field theory works from the literature. Using Monte Carlo methods, we evaluate the correlation function and entanglement entropy at the border. Furthermore, we construct the wave function for quasihole excitations and evaluate their mutual statistics with respect to quasiholes originating on the same or the other side of the interface. We show that some of these excitations lose their anyonic statistics when crossing the interface, which can be interpreted as impermeability of the interface to these anyons. Contrary to most of the previous works on interfaces between topological orders, our approach is microscopic, allowing for a direct simulation of, e.g., an anyon crossing the interface. Even though we determine the properties of the wave function numerically, the closed-form expressions allow us to study systems too large to be simulated by exact diagonalization.
