Abstract

Using methods of functional integration, and performing simple Gaussian integrals, I show that an interacting system of electrons can be bosonized in arbitrary dimensions, in terms of the electrostatic potential which mediates the interaction between them. Working with the bosonic field, the sytem is shown to exhibit localized structures reminiscent of striping in the cuprates.

Bosonization of interacting fermions in arbitrary dimension beyond the Gaussian approximation

Peter Kopietz, Joachim Hermisson, Kurt Schönhammer

We use our recently developed functional bosonization approach to bosonize interacting fermions in arbitrary dimension d beyond the Gaussian approximation. Even in d=1 the finite curvature of the energy dispersion at the Fermi surface gives rise to interactions between the bosons. In higher dimensions scattering processes describing momentum transfer between different patches on the Fermi surface (around-the-corner processes) are an additional source for corrections to the Gaussian approximation. We derive an explicit expression for the leading correction to the bosonized Hamiltonian and the irreducible self-energy of the bosonic propagator that takes the finite curvature as well as around-the-corner proceses into account. In the special case that around-the-corner scattering is negligible, we show that the self-energy correction to the Gaussian propagator is negligible if the dimensionless quantities (${\mathit{q}}_{\mathit{c}}$/${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}}$${)}^{\mathit{d}}$${\mathit{F}}_{0}$ [1+${\mathit{F}}_{0}$${]}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$\ensuremath{\mu}/${\ensuremath{\nu}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}$\ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\partial}${\ensuremath{\nu}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}$/\ensuremath{\partial}\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\Vert} are small compared with unity for all patches \ensuremath{\alpha}. Here ${\mathit{q}}_{\mathit{c}}$ is the cutoff of the interaction in wave-vector space, ${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}}$ is the Fermi wave vector, \ensuremath{\mu} is the chemical potential, ${\mathit{F}}_{0}$ is the usual dimensionless Landau interaction parameter, and ${\ensuremath{\nu}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}$ is the local density of states associated with patch \ensuremath{\alpha}. We also show that the well-known cancellation between vertex and self-energy corrections in one-dimensional systems, which is responsible for the fact that the random-phase approximation (RPA) for the density-density correlation function is exact in d=1, exists also in d>1, provided (1) the interaction cutoff ${\mathit{q}}_{\mathit{c}}$ is small compared with ${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}}$, and (2) the energy dispersion is locally linearized at the Fermi surface. Finally, we suggest a systematic method to calculate corrections to the RPA, which is based on the perturbative calculation of the irreducible bosonic self-energy arising from the non-Gaussian terms of the bosonized Hamiltonian.

Exact bosonization in arbitrary dimensions

Yu-An Chen

We extend the previous results of exact bosonization, mapping from fermionic operators to Pauli matrices, in 2D and 3D to arbitrary dimensions. This bosonization map gives a duality between any fermionic system in arbitrary n spatial dimensions and a class of (n -1)-form Z 2 gauge theories in n dimensions with a modified Gauss's law. This map preserves locality and has an explicit dependence on the second Stiefel-Whitney class and a choice of spin structure on the spatial manifold.A formula for Stiefel-Whitney homology classes on lattices is derived. In the Euclidean path integral, this exact bosonization map is equivalent to introducing a topological Steenrod square term to the space-time action.

An exact method for bosonizing the Fermi surface in arbitrary dimensions

Takamori Park, Leon Balents

Inspired by the recent work by Delacretaz et. al. [Phys. Rev. Res. 4, 033131 (2022)], we rigorously derive an exact and simple method to bosonize a non-interacting fermionic system with a Fermi surface starting from a microscopic Hamiltonian. In the long-wavelength limit, we show that the derived bosonized action is exactly equivalent to the action obtained by Delacretaz et. al. In addition, we propose diagrammatic rules to evaluate correlation functions using our bosonized theory and demonstrate these rules by calculating the three- and four-point density correlation functions. We also consider a general density-density interaction and show that the simplest approximation in our bosonic theory is identical to RPA results.

NOVEL PHENOMENA IN CHARGED BOSE LIQUID

Kimyeong Lee, Oleg Tchernyshyov

We investigate charged Bose liquid immersed in uniform background charge at zero temperature. Novel phenomena, such as oscillatory shielding of external localized electric charge, rotons and charge density waves (charge stripes in two dimensions), occur in any dimensions. Oscillatory shielding is caused by mixing between scalar boson exchange and Coulomb interactions, which mediate opposite forces. On the other hand, rotons and charge density waves are due to attractive local self-interaction of bosons. Rotons can be regarded as a finite size charge density wave packet without any back flow. We also comment on charge stripes observed recently in cuprates and nickelates.

Bosonization in d > 2 dimensions

I discuss in this talk a bosonization approach recently developed. It leads to the (exact) bosonization rule for fermion currents in d > 2 dimensions and also provides a systematic way of constructing the bosonic action in different regimes.
