Abstract

We use our recently developed functional bosonization approach to bosonize interacting fermions in arbitrary dimension d beyond the Gaussian approximation. Even in d=1 the finite curvature of the energy dispersion at the Fermi surface gives rise to interactions between the bosons. In higher dimensions scattering processes describing momentum transfer between different patches on the Fermi surface (around-the-corner processes) are an additional source for corrections to the Gaussian approximation. We derive an explicit expression for the leading correction to the bosonized Hamiltonian and the irreducible self-energy of the bosonic propagator that takes the finite curvature as well as around-the-corner proceses into account. In the special case that around-the-corner scattering is negligible, we show that the self-energy correction to the Gaussian propagator is negligible if the dimensionless quantities (${\mathit{q}}_{\mathit{c}}$/${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}}$${)}^{\mathit{d}}$${\mathit{F}}_{0}$ [1+${\mathit{F}}_{0}$${]}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$\ensuremath{\mu}/${\ensuremath{\nu}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}$\ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\partial}${\ensuremath{\nu}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}$/\ensuremath{\partial}\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\Vert} are small compared with unity for all patches \ensuremath{\alpha}. Here ${\mathit{q}}_{\mathit{c}}$ is the cutoff of the interaction in wave-vector space, ${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}}$ is the Fermi wave vector, \ensuremath{\mu} is the chemical potential, ${\mathit{F}}_{0}$ is the usual dimensionless Landau interaction parameter, and ${\ensuremath{\nu}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\alpha}}}$ is the local density of states associated with patch \ensuremath{\alpha}. We also show that the well-known cancellation between vertex and self-energy corrections in one-dimensional systems, which is responsible for the fact that the random-phase approximation (RPA) for the density-density correlation function is exact in d=1, exists also in d>1, provided (1) the interaction cutoff ${\mathit{q}}_{\mathit{c}}$ is small compared with ${\mathit{k}}_{\mathit{F}}$, and (2) the energy dispersion is locally linearized at the Fermi surface. Finally, we suggest a systematic method to calculate corrections to the RPA, which is based on the perturbative calculation of the irreducible bosonic self-energy arising from the non-Gaussian terms of the bosonized Hamiltonian.

An exact method for bosonizing the Fermi surface in arbitrary dimensions

Takamori Park, Leon Balents

Inspired by the recent work by Delacretaz et. al. [Phys. Rev. Res. 4, 033131 (2022)], we rigorously derive an exact and simple method to bosonize a non-interacting fermionic system with a Fermi surface starting from a microscopic Hamiltonian. In the long-wavelength limit, we show that the derived bosonized action is exactly equivalent to the action obtained by Delacretaz et. al. In addition, we propose diagrammatic rules to evaluate correlation functions using our bosonized theory and demonstrate these rules by calculating the three- and four-point density correlation functions. We also consider a general density-density interaction and show that the simplest approximation in our bosonic theory is identical to RPA results.

Geometrical approach to bosonization ofD>1 dimensional (non)-Fermi liquids

Dmitri V. Khveshchenko

We discuss an approach to higher-dimensional bosonization of interacting fermions based on a picture of fluctuating Fermi surface. Compared with the linearized ``constructive'' approach this method allows an account of the Fermi surface curvature due to non-Gaussian terms in the bosonized Lagrangian. On the basis of this description we propose a procedure of calculating density response functions beyond the random-phase approximation (RPA). We also formulate a bosonic theory of the compressible metal-like state at the half-filled lowest Landau level and check that in the Gaussian approximation it reproduces RPA results of the gauge theory by Halperin, Lee, and Read.

Instabilities of Fermi Liquids with Arbitrary Forward Scattering: Exact Approach

Dmitry Miserev, Joel Hutchinson, Herbert Schoeller +2 more

In this work, we consider $N$-fold degenerate $D$-dimensional electron gas with spherical Fermi surface and arbitrary forward-scattering density-density interaction transferring small momentum compared to the Fermi momentum $k_{\mathrm{F}}$. The dimensional reduction that is mathematically equivalent to the Haldane patch construction and similar multidimensional bosonization techniques, provides a natural map of two-point $D$-dimensional correlation functions (fermion Green function, susceptibilities etc.) onto effective one-dimensional (1D) correlators with the same diagrammatic structure, which can be evaluated exactly within a 1D bosonizable (Gaussian) theory. We then apply this formalism to evaluate the fermion Green function, pair and charge/flavor susceptibilities, as well as the composite correlation functions for the case of a finite-range interaction, where the interaction range $R_{\mathrm{s}} \gg 1/k_{\mathrm{F}}$ is large compared to the Fermi wavelength. First, we find that the single-particle spectral function remains Fermi-liquid-like which is fully consistent with the previous research. In contrast to the single-particle sector, the many-body channels are efficiently dressed by finite-range interactions, and this dressing is fully equivalent to the one-loop renormalization group (RG), which is also in line with previous multidimensional bosonization results. Within the forward-scattering model, stable long-range order is not possible, and relevant susceptibilities demonstrate singular power-law scaling with temperature $T$ at $T \to 0$. Correlation functions of higher-dimensional Luttinger liquids

Lorenz Bartosch, Peter Kopietz

Using higher-dimensional bosonization we study correlation functions of fermions with singular forward scattering. Following Bares and Wen [Phys. Rev. B 48, 8636 (1993)] we consider density-density interactions in $d$ dimensions that diverge in Fourier space for small momentum transfers |q| as $|\mathbf{q}{|}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\eta}}$ with $\ensuremath{\eta}=2(d\ensuremath{-}1).$ In this case the single-particle Green's function shows Luttinger-liquid behavior. However, in contrast to $d=1,$ in higher dimensions the singularity of the momentum distribution ${n}_{\mathbf{k}}$ for wave vectors k close to the Fermi wave vector ${k}_{F}$ is characterized by a different exponent than the singularity of the density of states \ensuremath{\rho}(\ensuremath{\omega}) for frequencies \ensuremath{\omega} close to zero. We also calculate the irreducible polarization ${\ensuremath{\Pi}}_{\ensuremath{\star}}(\mathbf{q},\ensuremath{\omega})$ for $|\mathbf{q}|\ensuremath{\approx}{2k}_{F}.$ Whereas in the one-dimensional Tomonaga-Luttinger model ${\ensuremath{\Pi}}_{\ensuremath{\star}}(\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{2k}_{F}+q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ exhibits anomalous scaling, we show that in $d>1$ the leading singular corrections cancel. Thus, even though singular density-density interactions in $d>1$ lead to Luttinger liquid behavior of the single-particle Green's function, gauge invariant correlation functions such as the polarization or the conductivity show conventional Fermi-liquid behavior. We discuss consequences for the effect of disorder on higher-dimensional Luttinger liquids.

Exact Low-Energy Solution for Critical Fermi Surfaces

Tomer Ravid, Tom Banks

We derive multidimensional bosonization directly from the electron gas in a low-energy, low momentum regime where $ω\gg \frac{k^2}{k_F}$, such that the dispersion can be linearized. To reach this limit, the Fermi momentum and the number of patches are scaled simultaneously keeping the width of each patch finite. We apply this to obtain an exact low-energy solution of the problem of a Fermi surface coupled to a gapless boson, free of disorder and electron-electron scattering. Contrary to claims in the literature, we show that the bosonized theory exactly reproduces the $ω^{2/3}$ of electrons, previously obtained in large-$N$ theories. We argue that correction to the self-energy due to tangential dispersion are subdominant at sufficiently low energies such that $v_F k\gg \left(\frac{g^4 v_F}{k_F}\right)^{1/3} ω^{2/3}$, where $g$ is the coupling constant.

Higher-Dimensional Bosonization with Nonlinear Energy Dispersion

Peter Kopietz, Guillermo E. Castilla

We develop a systematic method to treat the effect of nonlinearity in the energy dispersion on the usual bosonization result for the single-particle Green's function of fermions in arbitrary dimension. The leading corrections due to the quadratic term in the energy dispersion are explicitly calculated. In the Chern-Simons theory for half-filled quantum Hall systems, curvature is shown to be essential.
