Interacting Boson Theory of the Magnetization Process of the Spin-1/2 Ferromagnetic-Antiferromagnetic Alternating Heisenberg Chain

Abstract

The low temperature magnetization process of the ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain is studied using the interacting boson approximation. In the low field regime and near the saturation field, the spin wave excitations are approximated by the $δ$ function boson gas for which the Bethe ansatz solution is available. The finite temperature properties are calculated by solving the integral equation numerically. The comparison is made with Monte Carlo calculation and the limit of the applicability of the present approximation is discussed.

Elementary excitations for the integrable spin-SHeisenberg chain with an impurity spin

Yosuke Morita, Sei-ichiro Suga, A. Okiji

Elementary excitations for the integrable spin-S antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with an impurity spin are investigated by using the Bethe ansatz solution. Dressed holes are introduced in order to describe the elementary excitation. The characteristic energy dependence of the spectral density for the elementary excitation at zero temperature is discussed in connection with behaviour patterns of physical quantities. We extend our calculation for the elementary excitation to the case of finite temperatures, applying the method developed by Yang and Yang for one-dimensional interacting boson systems. At finite temperatures, in the case where , the spectral density shows a divergence property at zero excitation energy irrespective of the temperature, whereas in the case where , the peak structure develops in the low-energy region as the temperature is decreased.

Low-temperature properties of quantum antiferromagnetic chains with alternating spins and

S. Brehmer, H.-J. Mikeska, Shoji Yamamoto

We study the low-temperature properties of S = 1 and S = 1/2 alternating spin chains with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbour exchange couplings using analytical techniques as well as a quantum Monte Carlo method. The spin-wave approach predicts two different low-lying excitations, which are gapped and gapless, respectively. The structure of low-lying levels is also discussed using perturbation theory in terms of the strength of the Ising anisotropy. These analytical findings are compared with the results of quantum Monte Carlo calculations, and it turns out that spin-wave theory describes the present system well. We conclude that the quantum ferrimagnetic chain exhibits both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic aspects.

Spin dynamics of the antiferromagnetic spin- 12 chain at finite magnetic fields and intermediate temperatures

Simon Grossjohann, W. Brenig

We present a study of the dynamic structure factor of the antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain at finite temperatures and finite magnetic fields. Using quantum Monte Carlo based on the stochastic series expansion and maximum entropy methods, we evaluate the longitudinal and the transverse dynamic structure factors from vanishing magnetic fields up to and above the threshold ${B}_{c}$ for ferromagnetic saturation, as well as for high and for intermediate temperatures. We study the field-induced redistribution of spectral weight contrasting longitudinal versus transverse excitations. At finite fields below saturation incommensurate low-energy modes are found consistent with zero-temperature Bethe ansatz. The crossover between the field-induced ferromagnet above ${B}_{c}$ and the Luttinger liquid below ${B}_{c}$ is analyzed in terms of the transverse spin dynamics. Evaluating sum rules we assess the quality of the analytic continuation and demonstrate excellent consistency of the maximum entropy results.

Magnetization process of bilinear-biquadratic spin chains at finite temperature

Kouichi Okunishi

We investigate magnetization process $(M\ensuremath{-}H\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{c}\mathrm{u}\mathrm{r}\mathrm{v}\mathrm{e})$ of $S=1$ bilinear-biquadratic (BLBQ) spin chain near critical fields at finite temperatures. We use the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) for the two-dimensional classical lattice model mapped by the Trotter decomposition, with a help of the Baxter's variational principle. By comparing the DMRG result of $S=1/2 \mathrm{XY}$ chain with the exact solution, we show that the DMRG is an efficient tool to calculate the $M\ensuremath{-}H$ curve at finite temperatures. Further, we compute the $M\ensuremath{-}H$ curve of the BLBQ chain. We compare the DMRG curve of the magnetization process of the BLBQ chain with those obtained by analytic approaches: correctly mapped $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function Bose-gas approach and ``Bethe-ansatz approximation'' approach. Near the saturation field, we show that the $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function Bose gas and the Bethe-ansatz approximation describe the $M\ensuremath{-}H$ curve well in both at zero temperature and finite temperatures. Near the lower critical field, we find that the $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function Bose gas is a good effective model at the Heisenberg point. We further find that the $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function Bose gas cannot describe the $M\ensuremath{-}H$ curve at finite temperatures, near the special point where the $M\ensuremath{-}H$ curve changes qualitatively.

Critical Behavior of Spin-1/2 One-Dimensional Heisenberg Ferromagnet at Low Temperatures

Miki Yamada, Minoru Takahashi

A linear chain of S =1/2 spins with the isotropic Hamiltonian H = J Σ( S i x S i +1 x + S i y S i +1 y + S i z S i +1 z -1/4), ( J <0) , at low temperatures is studied numerically by solving a set of nonlinear integral equations which are derived from the Bethe Ansatz. We find that the free energy and susceptibility are both expanded in \(\sqrt{T/|J|}\) about T =0. The critical exponents are a =-1/2 and y =2. The coefficient of T 3/2 term in the free energy agrees with the spin wave theory with the accuracy of 0.1%. The coefficient of T -2 term in the zero-field susceptibility agrees with Fisher's solution of the classical Heisenberg model with the accuracy of 0.3%. The contribution from the second and higher order terms of the expansions in these thermodynamic quantities is not negligible in the region T /| J |>0.002.

Quantum phase transitions in alternating spin-($\frac{1}{2}$, $\frac{5}{2}$) Heisenberg chains

Antônio S F Tenório, R R Montenegro-Filho, M D Coutinho-Filho

The ground state spin-wave excitations and thermodynamic properties of two types of ferrimagnetic chains are investigated: the alternating spin-1/2 spin-5/2 chain and a similar chain with a spin-1/2 pendant attached to the spin-5/2 site. Results for magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and specific heat are obtained through the finite-temperature Lanczos method with the aim of describing the available experimental data, as well as comparison with theoretical results from the semiclassical approximation and the low-temperature susceptibility expansion derived from Takahashi's modified spin-wave theory. In particular, we study in detail the temperature versus magnetic field phase diagram of the spin-1/2 spin-5/2 chain, in which several low-temperature quantum phases are identified: the Luttinger liquid phase, the ferrimagnetic plateau and the fully polarized phase, and the respective quantum critical points and crossover lines.
