Abstract

Elementary excitations for the integrable spin-S antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with an impurity spin are investigated by using the Bethe ansatz solution. Dressed holes are introduced in order to describe the elementary excitation. The characteristic energy dependence of the spectral density for the elementary excitation at zero temperature is discussed in connection with behaviour patterns of physical quantities. We extend our calculation for the elementary excitation to the case of finite temperatures, applying the method developed by Yang and Yang for one-dimensional interacting boson systems. At finite temperatures, in the case where , the spectral density shows a divergence property at zero excitation energy irrespective of the temperature, whereas in the case where , the peak structure develops in the low-energy region as the temperature is decreased.

Elementary excitation spectrum for the multichannel Kondo model at finite temperatures

Sei-ichiro Suga, A. Okiji, N. Kawakami

Spectral density for the elementary excitation of the multichannel Kondo model is investigated at finite temperatures with the use of the Bethe-ansatz method. Our formulation is based on the method of Yang and Yang developed in one-dimensional interacting boson systems. In the orbital singlet case, the narrow peak structure develops in the low-energy region as the temperature is decreased, whereas in the underscreened case, the excitation spectrum exhibits a divergence property at zero excitation energy, irrespective of the temperature. In the overscreened case, in which the non-Fermi-liquid fixed point is stable in the ground state, the peak structure develops in the low-energy region and the weight at zero excitation energy increases as the temperature is decreased. We discuss characteristic properties of the excitation spectrum in connection with bulk properties.

Elementary excitations for the one-dimensional Hubbard model at finite temperatures

Asako Tomiyama, Sei-ichiro Suga, A. Okiji

The elementary excitations for the one-dimensional Hubbard model at finite temperatures are studied with the use of the Bethe ansatz solution. The formulation is based on the method of Yang and Yang, which was developed for the one-dimensional boson systems with the -function type interaction. The dispersion relations and the excitation spectrums are obtained numerically for the charge and the spin degrees of freedom.

The Heisenberg chain with impurities: crossover from Fermi-liquid to non-Fermi-liquid behaviour

P. Schlottmann

We consider an integrable SU(2)-invariant model consisting of a Heisenberg chain of spins S (the Takhtajan-Babujian model) interacting with a finite concentration c of impurity spins S ´. The thermodynamic Bethe- ansatz equations are stated for this model. The ground-state equations are analysed as a function of c , the magnetic field and the coupling parameter (impurity rapidity p 0 ) of the impurities to the lattice. In zero field the ground state is a singlet for finite c , but becomes non-Fermi-liquid-like as c 0 for S ´< S . Two rapidity bands play a role at T = 0 corresponding to strings of length 2 S and 2 S ´, respectively. The van Hove singularities of the empty bands define two critical fields, H c ( c , p 0 ) and H s ( c , p 0 ), at which the susceptibility diverges. H c tends to zero as c 0 giving rise to a crossover from non-Fermi-liquid behaviour for H > H c to Fermi-liquid-like behaviour for H < H c . The spectrum of elementary excitations and the finite-size corrections to the ground-state energy are calculated, and used to discuss the asymptotic behaviour of spin-spin correlation functions for long times and large distances.

Excitation spectra and thermodynamic response of segmented Heisenberg spin chains

Stefan Weßel, Stephan Haas

The spectral and thermodynamic response of segmented quantum spin chains is analyzed using a combination of numerical techniques and finite-size scaling arguments. Various distributions of segment lengths are considered, including the two extreme cases of quenched and annealed averages. As the impurity concentration is increased, it is found that (i) the integrated spectral weight is rapidly reduced, (ii) a pseudogap feature opens up at small frequencies, and (iii) at larger frequencies a discrete peak structure emerges, dominated by the contributions of the smallest cluster segments. The corresponding low-temperature thermodynamic response has a divergent contribution due to the odd-site clusters and a subdominant exponentially activated component due to the even-site segments whose finite-size gap is responsible for the spectral weight suppression at small frequencies. Based on simple scaling arguments, approximate low-temperature expressions are derived for the uniform susceptibility and the heat capacity. These are shown to be in good agreement with numerical solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations for ensembles of open-end chains.

Magnetic impurity coupled to a Heisenberg chain: Density-matrix renormalization-group study

W. Zhang, J. Igarashi, Peter Fulde

By making use of the Lanczos and the density-matrix renormalization-group methods, we study the zero-temperature properties of a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain system with a spin-1/2 magnetic impurity symmetrically coupled to its two nearest-neighbor spins. A comparison is made with the results for a magnetic impurity coupled only to the nearest-neighbor spin in the chain. The binding energy and the spin correlations are calculated. The matrix elements of the impurity spin operators are also calculated between several low-energy states. By carefully analyzing finite-size effects, we show that the dynamical structure factor of the impurity contains a \ensuremath{\delta}-function contribution at zero frequency which does not vanish in the thermodynamic limit for the case of symmetrical coupling. This indicates a partial decoupling of the impurity spin from the spins in the chain, and therefore the impurity susceptibility is predicted to show a Curie behavior. This contradicts the two-channel Kondo behavior suggested from analytic considerations.

Finite-temperature behavior of an impurity in the spin-1/2 XXZ chain

Ryoko Yahagi, Jun Sato, Tetsuo Deguchi

We study the zero- and the finite-temperature behavior of the integrable spin-1/2 XXZ periodic chain with an impurity by the algebraic and thermal Bethe ansatz methods. We evaluate the local magnetization on the impurity site at zero temperature analytically and derive the impurity susceptibility exactly from it. In the graphs of the impurity specific heat versus temperature, we show how the impurity spin becomes more liberated from the bulk many-body effect as the exchange coupling between the impurity spin and other spins decreases and that at low temperature it couples strongly to them such as in the Kondo effect. Thus, we observe not only the crossover behavior from the high- to the low-temperature regime, but another from the N -site chain to the ( N − 1)-site chain with a free impurity spin. We also show that the estimate of the Wilson ratio at a given low temperature is independent of the impurity parameter if its absolute value is small enough with respect to the temperature and the universality class is described by the XXZ anisotropy in terms of the dressed charge.
