A single-chain analysis of doped quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 compounds: paramagnetic versus doping

Abstract

We present a numerical study of single-chain models of doped spin-1 compounds. We use low-energy effective one-dimensional models for both the cases of paramagnetic and spin-1/2 doping. In the case of paramagnetic doping, the effective model is equivalent to the bond disordered spin-1/2 chain model recently analysed by means of the real space renormalization group by Hyman and Yang. By means of exact diagonalizations in the XX limit, we confirm the stability of the Haldane phase for weak disorder. Above a critical amount of disorder, the effective model flows to the so-called random singlet fixed point. In the case of spin-1/2 doping, we argue that the Haldane phase should be destabilized even for weak disorder. This picture is not in contradiction with existing experimental data. We also discuss the possible occurrence of (unobserved) antiferromagnetically ordered phases.

Bond-versus-site doping models for the off-chain-doped Haldane-gap system Y2BaNiO5

Jizhong Lou, Shaojin Qin, Zhao-Bin Su +1 more

Using the density matrix renormalization-group technique, we calculate the impurity energy levels for two different effective models of off-chain doping for quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg chain compound ${\mathrm{Y}}_{2}{\mathrm{BaNiO}}_{5}:$ ferromagnetic bond doping and antiferromagnetic site spin-1/2 doping. Thresholds of the impurity strength for the appearance of localized states are found for both models. However, the ground-state and low-energy excitations for weak impurity strength are different for these two models and the difference can be detected by experiments.

Characterizing the Haldane phase in quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Keola Wierschem, Pinaki Sengupta

We review the basic properties of the Haldane phase in spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains, including its persistence in quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) geometries. Using large-scale numerical simulations, we map out the phase diagram for a realistic model applicable to experimental Haldane compounds. We also investigate the effect of different chain coupling geometries and confirm a general mean-field universality of the critical coupling times the coordination number of the lattice. Inspired by recent developments in the characterization of symmetry protected topological (SPT) states, of which the Haldane phase of the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is a preeminent example, we provide direct evidence that the Q1D Haldane phase is indeed a nontrivial SPT state.

Phases of random antiferromagnetic spin-1 chains

Cécile Monthus, O. Golinelli, Th. Jolicœur

We formulate a real-space renormalization scheme that allows a study of the effects of bond randomness in the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain. There are four types of bonds that appear during the renormalization flow. We implement the decimation procedure numerically. We give a detailed study of the probability distributions of all these bonds in the phases that occur when the strength of the disorder is varied. Approximate flow equations are obtained in the weak-disorder regime as well as in the strong-disorder case, where the physics is that of the random-singlet phase.

Kondo effect in XXZ spin chains

Akira Furusaki, Takashi Hikihara

The Kondo effect in a one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $\mathrm{XXZ}$ model in the gapless $\mathrm{XY}$ regime $(\ensuremath{-}1<\ensuremath{\Delta}<~1)$ is studied both analytically and numerically. In our model an impurity spin $(S=1/2)$ is coupled to a single spin in the $\mathrm{XXZ}$ spin chain. Perturbative renormalization-group (RG) analysis is performed for various limiting cases to deduce low-energy fixed points. It is shown that in the ground state the impurity spin is screened by forming a singlet with a spin in the host $\mathrm{XXZ}$ chain. In the antiferromagnetic side $(0<\ensuremath{\Delta}<~1)$ the host chain is cut into two semi-infinite chains by the singlet. In the ferromagnetic side $(\ensuremath{-}1<\ensuremath{\Delta}<0),$ on the other hand, the host $\mathrm{XXZ}$ chain remains as a single chain through ``healing'' of a weakened bond in the low-energy (long-distance) limit. The density-matrix renormalization-group method is used to study the size scaling of finite-size energy gaps and the power-law decay of correlation functions in the ground state. The numerical results are in good agreement with the predictions of the RG analysis. Low-temperature behaviors of specific heat and susceptibility are also discussed.

Phase Diagram of the Random Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Spin-1 Chain

A. Saguia, B. Boechat, M. A. Contínentino

We present a new perturbative real space renormalization group (RG) to study random quantum spin chains and other one-dimensional disordered quantum systems. The method overcomes problems of the original approach which fails for quantum random chains with spins larger than S=1/2. Since it works even for weak disorder, we are able to obtain the zero temperature phase diagram of the random antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1 chain as a function of disorder. We find a random singlet phase for strong disorder. As the disorder decreases, the system shows a crossover from a Griffiths to a disordered Haldane phase.

Antiferromagnetic order in weakly coupled random spin chains

J. Kokalj, J. Herbrych, A. Zheludev +1 more

The ordering of weakly coupled random antiferromagnetic $S=1/2$ chains, as relevant for the recent experimentally investigated spin chain materials, is considered theoretically. The one-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg model with random exchange interactions is treated numerically on finite chains with the density-matrix renormalization-group approach as well as with the standard renormalization analysis, both within the mean-field approximation for interchain coupling ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$. Results for the ordering temperature ${T}_{N}$ and for the ordered moment ${m}_{0}$ are presented and are both reduced with increasing disorder, agreeing with the experimental observations. The most pronounced effect of the random singlet concept appears to be a very large span of local ordered moments, becoming wider with decreasing ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$, consistent with the $\ensuremath{\mu}$-SR experimental findings.
