Abstract

The ordering of weakly coupled random antiferromagnetic $S=1/2$ chains, as relevant for the recent experimentally investigated spin chain materials, is considered theoretically. The one-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg model with random exchange interactions is treated numerically on finite chains with the density-matrix renormalization-group approach as well as with the standard renormalization analysis, both within the mean-field approximation for interchain coupling ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$. Results for the ordering temperature ${T}_{N}$ and for the ordered moment ${m}_{0}$ are presented and are both reduced with increasing disorder, agreeing with the experimental observations. The most pronounced effect of the random singlet concept appears to be a very large span of local ordered moments, becoming wider with decreasing ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$, consistent with the $\ensuremath{\mu}$-SR experimental findings.

Low Energy Properties of the Random Spin-1/2 Ferromagnetic-Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chain

Kazuo Hida

The low energy properties of the spin-1/2 random Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions are studied by means of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and real space renormalization group (RSRG) method for finite chains. The results of the two methods are consistent with each other. The deviation of the gap distribution from that of the random singlet phase and the formation of the large-spin state is observed even for relatively small systems. For a small fraction of the ferromagnetic bond, the effect of the crossover to the random singlet phase on the low temperature susceptibility and specific heat is discussed. The crossover concentration of the ferromagnetic bond is estimated from the numerical data.

Weakly Coupled Antiferromagnetic Quantum Spin Chains

Ziqiang Wang

Quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets formed by a $d$-dimensional hypercubic lattice of weakly coupled spin- $\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains are studied by combining exact results in one-dimension and renormalization group analyses of the interchain correlations. It is shown that $d$-dimensional magnetic long-range order develops at zero temperature for infinitesimal antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic interchain couplings. In the presence of weak bond alternations, the order-disorder transition occurs at a finite interchain coupling. Relevances to the lightly doped quantum antiferromagnets and multilayer quantum Hall systems are discussed.

Heisenberg spin chain with random-sign couplings

Michele Fava, Jesper Lykke Jacobsen, Adam Nahum

We study the 1D quantum Heisenberg chain with randomly ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic couplings [a model previously studied by approximate strong-disorder renormalization group (RG)]. We find that, at least for sufficiently large spin S , the ground state has “spin glass” order. The spin waves on top of this state have the dynamical exponent z = 3 / 2 , intermediate between the values z = 1 of the antiferromagnet and z = 2 of the ferromagnet. Density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations are in good agreement with the analytical results for spins S = 1 and S = 3 / 2 . The case S = 1 / 2 shows large finite size effects: We suggest that this case is also ordered, but with a small ordered moment.

Random exchange effects in antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains: A Monte Carlo study

H.-B. Schüttler, Douglas J. Scalapino, Paul Michael Grant

We have carried out Monte Carlo studies of a random-exchange antiferromagnetic spin-(1/2) chain. For systems with XY-like (anisotropic) and with Heisenberg (isotropic) coupling, our results confirm the existence of a disorder-induced low-temperature (T) divergence in the long-wavelength ${S}^{z}$-${S}^{z}$ susceptibility \ensuremath{\chi} which was previously predicted by real-space renormalization-group (RSRG) treatments. Over the finite temperature range studied, these results are consistent with a 1/(T ${\mathrm{ln}}^{2}$T) behavior of \ensuremath{\chi}, and hence in qualitative agreement with the RSRG results. As in the XY-Heisenberg regime, we also find a disorder-induced enhancement of the low-T susceptibility for a system with Ising-like exchange coupling which, over the finite temperature range studied, is again consistent with RSRG results. However, there are inconsistencies between the RSRG predictions in the Ising-like regime at very low temperatures, and the exact results for the random-exchange Ising chain and the low-temperature behavior of \ensuremath{\chi} in the Ising-like regime may in fact be more complicated than predicted by RSRG. Finally, we also present results for the antiferromagnetic susceptibility and structure factor. For both Heisenberg and Ising-like systems, we find that disorder suppresses the long-range antiferromagnetic correlations at low T.

Renormalization-group method for weakly coupled quantum chains: Application to the spin- 12 Heisenberg model

S. Moukouri

The Kato-Bloch perturbation formalism is used to present a density-matrix renormalization-group method for strongly anisotropic two-dimensional systems. This method is used to study Heisenberg chains weakly coupled by the transverse couplings ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ and ${J}_{d}$ (along the diagonals). An extensive comparison of the renormalization group and quantum Monte Carlo results for parameters where the simulations by the latter method are possible shows a very good agreement between the two methods. It is found, by analyzing ground state energies and spin-spin correlation functions, that there is a transition between two ordered magnetic states. When ${J}_{d}∕{J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.5$, the ground state displays a N\'eel order. When ${J}_{d}∕{J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.5$, a collinear magnetic ground state in which interchain spin correlations are ferromagnetic becomes stable. In the vicinity of the transition point, ${J}_{d}∕{J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.5$, the ground state is disordered. But, the nature of this disordered ground state is unclear. While the numerical data seem to show that the chains are disconnected, the possibility of a genuine disordered two-dimensional state, hidden by finite size effects, cannot be excluded.

Quasi-one-dimensional spin- 12 Heisenberg magnets in their ordered phase: Correlation functions

Fabian H. L. Eßler, Alexei M. Tsvelik, Gesualdo Delfino A

We study weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin chains in their ordered phase by combining an exact solution of the single-chain problem with a random-phase-approximation analysis of the interchain interaction. A single chain is described by a quantum Sine-Gordon model and dynamical staggered susceptibilities are determined by employing the form-factor approach to quantum correlation functions. We consider both antiferromagnetic order encountered in quasi-one-dimensional materials such as ${\mathrm{KCuF}}_{3}$ and spin-Peierls order as found in ${\mathrm{CuGeO}}_{3}.$
