Dynamical Transition from a Quasi-One-Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensate to a Tonks-Girardeau Gas

Patrik Öhberg, Luis Santos

We analyze in detail the expansion of a 1D Bose gas after removing the axial confinement. We show that during its one-dimensional expansion the density of the Bose gas does not follow a self-similar solution. Our analysis is based on a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with variable nonlinearity whose validity is discussed for the expansion problem, by comparing with an exact Bose-Fermi mapping for the case of an initial Tonks-Girardeau gas. For this case, the gas is shown to expand self-similarly, with a different scaling law compared to the one-dimensional Thomas-Fermi condensate.

Dynamics of Fluctuating Bose-Einstein Condensates

We present a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation that describes also the dissipative dynamics of a trapped partially Bose condensed gas. It takes the form of a complex nonlinear Schrödinger equation with noise. We consider an approximation to this Langevin field equation that preserves the correct equilibrium for both the condensed and the noncondensed parts of the gas. We then use this formalism to describe the reversible formation of a one-dimensional Bose condensate, and compare with recent experiments. In addition, we determine the frequencies and the damping of collective modes in this case.

Frequency shift and mode coupling in the nonlinear dynamics of a Bose-condensed gas

F. Dalfovo, C. Minniti, Лев П. Питаевский

We investigate the behavior of large amplitude oscillations of a trapped Bose-condensed gas of alkali-metal atoms at zero temperature, by solving the equations of hydrodynamics for collective modes. Due to the atom-atom interaction, the equations of motion are nonlinear and give rise to significant frequency shift and mode coupling. We provide analytic expressions for the frequency shift, pointing out the crucial role played by the anisotropy of the confining potential. For special values of the anisotropy parameter the mode coupling is particularly strong and the frequency shift becomes large, revealing a peculiar behavior of the Bose-condensed gas. Consequences on the theory of collapse and revival of collective excitations are also discussed.
