Bose–Einstein condensation and heat capacity of a nonideal gas

Abstract

The theory of a nonideal gas developed by N. N. Bogoliubov is applied for a semiclassical description of nonlinear dynamics of Bose condensate density. Analytical calculations lead to temperature dependence of heat capacity Cv typical of superfluid He4 at temperatures below and above the superconducting transition temperature Tc except for the interval 1.6 K<T<2.2 K.

Bose-Einstein condensation at constant pressure

Yu. M. Poluéktov

In the weakly non-ideal gas model [1], the Bose-Einstein condensation at constant pressure is considered. The temperature of transition to the state with condensate is found. Temperature dependences of the total density and condensate density, the energy, entropy and heat capacities are calculated.

Bose-Einstein condensates and thermal field theory

E Kovalchuk, R. Kobes

We consider a homogeneous nonideal Bose gas in equilibrium at nonzero temperature below the critical temperature Tc in the framework of thermal field theory. Quantum corrections up to second order are calculated, which are shown to be crucial in obtaining the correct behavior in thermodynamic quantities such as the specific heat. Superconducting properties of a nonideal bipolaron gas

Victor Dmitrievich Lakhno

The properties of a Bose gas of translation-invariant (TI) bipolarons analogous to Cooper pairs are considered. As in the BCS theory, the description of a TI-bipolaron gas is based on the electron-phonon interaction and Froehlich Hamiltonian. As distinct from the BCS theory, when the correlation length greatly exceeds the mean distance between the pairs, here we deal with the opposite case when the correlation length is much less than the distance between the pairs. We calculate the critical temperature of the transition of a TI-bipolaron Bose-gas into the superconducting state, its energy, heat capacity and heat of the transition. The results obtained are used to explain the experiments on high-temperature superconductors. Possible ways of raising the critical temperature of high-temperature superconductors are discussed.

A refined Bogoliubov-Huang approach to helium II thermodynamics

Jan F. Maćkowiak, Dawid Borycki

The thermodynamics of a free Bose gas with effective temperature scale $\tilde{T}$ and hard-sphere Bose gas with the $\tilde{T}$ scale are studied. $\tilde{T}$ arises as the temperature experienced by a single particle in a quantum gas with 2-body harmonic oscillator interaction $V_\textrm{osc}$, which at low temperatures is expected to simulate, almost correctly, the attractive part of the interatomic potential $V_\textrm{He}$ between $^{4}\textrm{He}$ atoms. The repulsive part of $V_\textrm{He}$ is simulated by a hard-sphere (HS) potential. The thermodynamics of this system of HS bosons, with the $\tilde{T}$ temperature scale (HSET), is investigated, first, by the Bogoliubov-Huang method and next by a modified version of this method, which takes approximate account of those terms of the 2-body repulsion which are linear in the zero-momentum Bose operators $a_0,\,\,a^*_0$ (originally rejected by Bogoliubov). Theoretical heat capacity $C_V(T)$ exhibits good agreement, below 2.1 K, with the experimental heat capacity graph observed in $^{4}\textrm{He}$ at saturated vapour pressure. The phase transition to the low-temperature phase, with a Bose-Einstein condensate, occurs in the HSET at $T_λ=$2.17 K, and is accompanied, in the modified HSET version, by a singularity of $C_V(T)$. Other thermal properties of HSET, such as the momentum distribution function, the fraction of atoms in the momentum condensate and normal fluid density, agree qualitatively with those of $^{4}\textrm{He}$, but improve those of the free Bose gas.

Superfluidity nature of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensation with finite size effect

Alyaa A. Mahmoud

We report on a superfluid properties of a Bose- Einstein condensate in a rotating harmonic trap. We employ the semiclassical approximation, which is the density of state approach. Our approach provided the finite size effect. The superfluid fraction of bosons and its heat capacity at constant volume are investigated. The calculated results provide a good qualitative agreement with the measured experimental results for superfluid helium 4H. Moreover, furnish useful qualitatively theoretical results for a spectroscopic measurement of the superfluid fraction of an ultracold atomic gas [N. R. Cooper and Z. Hadzibabic, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 030401 (2010)]. Our results show that both The superfluid fraction of bosons and its heat capacity depend on the number of the atoms. This significant dependence should be considered when the it in situ widths are used in extracting measurable experimental quantities. Our approach can be extended to consider the rotating condensate in optical potential .

Bose-einstein condensation in a Bose gas under cooling conditions

R. B. Saptsov

The mechanism of condensation of a weakly nonideal Bose gas into a superfluid state (described in [1]) is analyzed by taking into account strong density fluctuations. The probability of occurrence of an optimal fluctuation leading to the formation of a superfluid phase is calculated. The relationship between the results of this study and the analysis presented in [1] is discussed.
