Low-energy states for correlated-electron models in the strong-coupling limit

Abstract

We study a class of exactly solvable models for strongly correlated electrons, defined on a set of N cells, and with infinite on-site repulsion on part of the sites of each cell. For 2N or more electrons the exact ground state is known. We construct a tractable (2N-1)-particle state which becomes asymptotically degenerate to the ground state in the thermodynamic limit for one special D-dimensional model. For other models, that state may be used to calculate variational upper bounds on the ground-state energy. For a Hubbard chain with three sites per unit cell, the analytical bound is compared to numerically exact results. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Uniqueness of the ground state in exactly solvable Hubbard, periodic Anderson, and Emery models

Hal Tasaki

We study the exactly solvable strongly interacting electron models recently introduced by Brandt and Giesekus and further generalized by other authors. For a very general class of models, including the Hubbard, the periodic Anderson, and the Emery models with certain hopping matrices and infinitely large on-site Coulomb repulsion on d sites, we prove that the known exact ground state is indeed the unique ground state for a certain electron number. The uniqueness guarantees that one can discuss physics of various strongly interacting electron systems by analyzing the exact ground states.

Exact low-temperature properties of a class of highly frustrated Hubbard models

Oleg Derzhko, A. Honecker, Johannes Richter

We study the repulsive Hubbard model both analytically and numerically on a family of highly frustrated lattices which have one-electron states localized on isolated trapping cells. We construct and count exact many-electron ground states for a wide range of electron densities and obtain closed-form expressions for the low-temperature thermodynamic quantities which are universal for all lattices of the family. Furthermore, we find that saturated ferromagnetism is obtained only for sufficiently high electron densities and large Hubbard repulsion $U$ while there is no finite average moment in the ground states at lower densities.

One-dimensional model for doubly degenerate electrons

You‐Quan Li, Shi-Jian Gu, Zu‐Jian Ying +1 more

A Hubbard-like model with SU(4) symmetry for electrons with twofold orbital degeneracy is studied extensively. Exact solution in one dimension is derived by means of Bethe ansatz, where the sites are supposed to be occupied by at most two electrons. The features of ground state and excited states for repulsive coupling are shown. For finite $N$ number of electrons, the configurations of quantum numbers are given explicitly and the spectra of excitations are obtained by solving Bethe-ansatz equation numerically. For infinite $N,$ the ground state and various kinds of low-lying excitations are obtained on the basis of thermodynamics limit.

Phase transitions and exact ground-state properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard model in a magnetic field

Chia‐Wei Yang, ARMEN N. KOCHARIAN, Y. L. Chiang

The exact phase diagrams of the one-dimensional Hubbard model, both attractive and repulsive, in the presence of an arbitrary magnetic field h for various electron concentrations n and on-site interaction strengths U <0 or U >0 are calculated and investigated. The exact ground-state properties, namely, the ground-state energy, the average spin (magnetization), the concentration of the doubly occupied sites, the kinetic energy, the chemical potential, the spin (magnetic) susceptibility and the charge compressibility, are calculated and examined over a wide range of interaction strengths U for various h and n . It is found that the spin susceptibility at half-filling is non-analytic and changes discontinuously as U →0. The exact theory shows the absence of a charge energy gap in the U ⩽0 region for all n and provides, for the chemical potential, the rigorous upper and lower bounds for half-filled and empty bands respectively. The analytical results derived for the weak-coupling limit and asymptotic expansions for strong coupling are in full agreement with the numerical calculations.

EXACT GROUND STATES OF CORRELATED ELECTRONS ON PENTAGON CHAINS

Zsolt Gulácsi

We construct a class of exact ground states for correlated electrons on pentagon chains in the high density region and discuss their physical properties. In this procedure the Hamiltonian is first cast in a positive semidefinite form using composite operators as a linear combination of creation operators acting on the sites of finite blocks. In the same step, the interaction is also transformed to obtain terms which require for their minimum eigenvalue zero at least one electron on each site. The transformed Hamiltonian matches the original Hamiltonian through a nonlinear system of equations whose solutions place the deduced ground states in restricted regions of the parameter space. In the second step, nonlocal product wave functions in position space are constructed. They are proven to be unique ground states which describe non-saturated ferromagnetic and correlated half metallic states. These solutions emerge when the strength of the Hubbard interaction Ui is site-dependent inside the unit cell. In the deduced phases, the interactions tune the bare dispersive band structure such to develop an effective upper flat band. We show that this band flattening effect emerges for a broader class of chains and is not restricted to pentagon chains. For the characterization of the deduced solutions, uniqueness proofs, exact ground state expectation values for long-range hopping amplitudes and correlation functions are also calculated. The study of physical reasons which lead to the appearance of ferromagnetism has revealed a new mechanism for the emergence of an ordered phase, described here in detail. This works as follows: starting from a completely dispersive bare band structure, the interactions quench the kinetic energy, hence the ordered phase is obtained solely by a drastic decrease of the interaction energy. Since Ui are site dependent, this determinative decrease is obtained by a redistribution of the double occupancy di such to attain small di where the on-site Coulomb repulsion Ui is high, and vice versa. The kinetic energy quench leads to the upper effective flat band, whose role is to enhance by its degeneracy the switching to the ordered phase dictated and stabilized by the interactions present. It is shown that for this phenomenon to occur, a given degree of complexity is needed for the chain, and the mechanism becomes inactive when the Ui interactions are homogeneous, or are missing from the ground state wave function.

Ground-state properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model

H. Q. Lin

Using all appropriate symmetries for a two-dimensional square system, we have been able to diagonalize exactly the Hubbard Hamiltonian on the 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4 and 18-site lattices. We calculate the ground-state energies, hole-hole interactions, and various correlation functions as functions of the Coulomb repulsion U and band filling, and compare the Hubbard-model results with those obtained from the t-J and strong-coupling models.
