Abstract

We study the repulsive Hubbard model both analytically and numerically on a family of highly frustrated lattices which have one-electron states localized on isolated trapping cells. We construct and count exact many-electron ground states for a wide range of electron densities and obtain closed-form expressions for the low-temperature thermodynamic quantities which are universal for all lattices of the family. Furthermore, we find that saturated ferromagnetism is obtained only for sufficiently high electron densities and large Hubbard repulsion $U$ while there is no finite average moment in the ground states at lower densities.

Low-temperature thermodynamics of one class of flat-band models

Oleg Derzhko, Johannes Richter, A. Honecker

We consider the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model and the repulsive Hubbard model for a class of frustrated lattices with a completely dispersionless (flat) lowest one-particle (either one-magnon or one-electron) band. We construct exact many-particle ground states for a wide range of particle densities, calculate their degeneracy, and, as a result, obtain closed-form expressions for the low-temperature thermodynamic quantities around a particular value of the magnetic field h sat or the chemical potential μ 0 . We confirm our analytic findings by numerical data for finite lattices.

Low-temperature properties of the Hubbard model on highly frustrated one-dimensional lattices

Oleg Derzhko, Johannes Richter, A. Honecker +2 more

We consider the repulsive Hubbard model on three highly frustrated one-dimensional lattices---sawtooth chain and two kagom\'e chains---with completely dispersionless (flat) lowest single-electron bands. We construct the complete manifold of exact many-electron ground states at low electron fillings and calculate the degeneracy of these states. As a result, we obtain closed-form expressions for low-temperature thermodynamic quantities around a particular value of the chemical potential ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}$. We discuss specific features of thermodynamic quantities of these ground-state ensembles such as residual entropy, an extra low-temperature peak in the specific heat, and the existence of ferromagnetism and paramagnetism. We confirm our analytical results by comparison with exact-diagonalization data for finite systems.

Low-temperature thermodynamics for a flat-band ferromagnet: Rigorous versus numerical results

Oleg Derzhko, A. Honecker, Johannes Richter

The repulsive Hubbard model on a sawtooth chain exhibits the lowest single-electron band which is completely dispersionless (flat) for a specific choice of the hopping parameters. We construct exact many-electron ground states for electron fillings up to 1/4. We map the low-energy degrees of freedom of the electron model to a model of classical hard dimers on a chain and, as a result, obtain the ground-state degeneracy as well as closed-form expressions for the low-temperature thermodynamic quantities around a particular value of the chemical potential. We compare our analytical findings with complementary numerical data. Although we consider a specific model, we believe that some of our results such as a low-temperature peak in the specific heat are generic for flat-band ferromagnets.

Quantum critical behavior and thermodynamics of the repulsive one-dimensional Hubbard model in a magnetic field

Ovidiu I. Pâţu, Andreas Klümper, Angela Foerster

Even though the Hubbard model is one of the most fundamental models of highly correlated electrons, analytical and numerical data describing its thermodynamics at nonzero magnetization are relatively scarce. We present a detailed investigation of the thermodynamic properties for the one-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model in the presence of an arbitrary magnetic field for all values of the filling fraction and temperatures as low as $T\ensuremath{\sim}0.005t.$ Our analysis is based on the system of integral equations derived in the quantum transfer matrix framework. We determine the critical exponents of the quantum phase transitions and also provide analytical derivations for some of the universal functions characterizing the thermodynamics in the vicinities of the quantum critical points. Extensive numerical data for the specific heat, susceptibility, compressibility, and entropy are reported. The experimentally relevant double occupancy presents an interesting doubly nonmonotonic temperature dependence at intermediate values of the interaction strength and also at large repulsion and magnetic fields close to the critical value. The susceptibility in zero magnetic field has a logarithmic singularity at low temperatures for all filling factors similar to the behavior of the same quantity in the spin-1/2 isotropic Heisenberg model. We determine the density profiles for a harmonically trapped system and show that while the total density profile seems to depend mainly on the value of chemical potential at the center of the trap the distribution of phases in the inhomogeneous system changes dramatically as we increase the magnetic field.

Properties of Hubbard models with degenerate localized single particle eigenstates

Andreas Mielke

We consider the repulsive Hubbard model on a class of lattices or graphs for which there is a large degeneracy of the single particle ground states and where the projector onto the space of single particle ground states is highly reducible. This means that one can find a basis in the space of the single particle ground states such that the support of each single particle ground state belongs to some small cluster and these clusters do not overlap. We show how such lattices can be constructed in arbitrary dimensions. We construct all multi-particle ground states of these models for electron numbers not larger than the number of localized single particle eigenstates. We derive some of the ground state properties, esp. the residual entropy, i.e. the finite entropy density at zero temperature.

Low-energy states for correlated-electron models in the strong-coupling limit

Andreas Giesekus, U. Brandt

We study a class of exactly solvable models for strongly correlated electrons, defined on a set of N cells, and with infinite on-site repulsion on part of the sites of each cell. For 2N or more electrons the exact ground state is known. We construct a tractable (2N-1)-particle state which becomes asymptotically degenerate to the ground state in the thermodynamic limit for one special D-dimensional model. For other models, that state may be used to calculate variational upper bounds on the ground-state energy. For a Hubbard chain with three sites per unit cell, the analytical bound is compared to numerically exact results. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
