Abstract

We compute the magnetic structure factor, the singlet correlation function, and the momentum distribution of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model at the density \ensuremath{\rho}=0.7. The density-matrix--renormalization-group method is used. We show that in the weak-coupling regime, the ground state is paramagnetic. We argue that a Luttinger-liquid description of the model in this region is consistent with our calculations. In the strong-coupling regime, the ground state becomes ferromagnetic. The conduction electrons show a spinless-fermionlik

Ground-state magnetic properties of the Kondo lattice model at low electron densities

S. Caprara, Anders Rosengren

The infinite-size version of the density-matrix renormalization-group approach in real space is applied to the Kondo lattice model in one dimension, providing a more accurate determination of the zero-temperature magnetic properties for electron densities n ⩽ 0.5. The paramagnetic state of the free model evolves into a state with ferromagnetic correlations, by increasing the strength of the Kondo coupling, in agreement with previous numerical results. The change in the magnetic properties is produced by the competition between the RKKY mechanism, which favours the paramagnetic state in the weak-coupling region, and the Kondo screening, which leads to the formation of tightly bound singlets in the strong-coupling region, enforcing ferromagnetic correlations in the system.

Quasiparticles in the Kondo lattice model at partial fillings of the conduction band using the density matrix renormalization group

Sebastian Smerat, Ulrich Schollwöck, Ian P. McCulloch +1 more

We study the spectral properties of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model as a function of the exchange coupling, the band filling, and the quasimomentum in the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. Using the density-matrix renormalization group method, we compute the dispersion relation of the quasiparticles, their lifetimes, and the $Z$ factor. Sigrist et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 67, 2211 (1991)] provided the exact ground state and the quasiparticle-dispersion relation of the Kondo lattice model with one conduction electron. The quasiparticle could be identified as the spin polaron. Our calculations of the dispersion relation for partial band fillings give a result similar to the one-electron case, which suggests that the quasiparticle in both cases is the spin polaron. We find that the quasiparticle lifetime differs by orders of magnitude between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases and depends strongly on the quasimomentum.

Magnetic order and strongly correlated effects in the one-dimensional Ising-Kondo lattice

Xiaofan Zhou, Jingtao Fan, Suotang Jia

We investigate the magnetic order and related strongly correlated effects in a one-dimensional Ising-Kondo lattice with transverse field. This model is the anisotropic limit of the conventional isotropic Kondo lattice model, in the sense that the itinerant electrons interact with the localized magnetic moments via only longitudinal Kondo exchange. Adopting the numerical density-matrix renormalization group method, we map out the ground-state phase diagram in various parameter spaces. Depending on the Kondo coupling and filling number, three distinct phases, including a metallic paramagnetic, a metallic ferromagnetic, and a gapped spin-density wave phase, are obtained. The spin-density wave is characterized by an ordering wave vector, which coincides with the nesting wave vector of the Fermi surface. This makes the corresponding magnetic transition a spin analog of the Peierls transition occurring in the one-dimensional metal. Moreover, by analyzing the momentum distribution function and charge correlation function, the conduction electrons are shown to behave like free spinless fermions in the ferromagnetic phase. We finally discuss the effect of the repulsive Hubbard interaction between conduction electrons. Our paper enriches the Kondo physics and deepens the current understanding of the heavy fermion compounds.

The one-dimensional Kondo lattice model studied by the density matrix renormalization group method

Naokazu Shibata, Kazuo Ueda

Recent developments in the theoretical investigation of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model by using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method are discussed in this review. Short summaries are given of the zero-temperature DMRG method, the finite-temperature DMRG method, and also the application of the finite- T DMRG to dynamic quantities. Away from half-filling, the paramagnetic metallic state is shown to be a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid with a large Fermi surface. The size of the large Fermi surface is determined by the sum of the densities of the conduction electrons and the localized spins. The correlation exponent of this metallic phase is smaller than 1/2. At half-filling the ground state is insulating. The excitation gaps are different, depending on the channels, the spin gap, the charge gap and the quasiparticle gap. The temperature dependence of the spin and charge susceptibilities and the specific heat are discussed. Particularly interesting is the temperature dependence of various excitation spectra, which indicates unusual properties for the Kondo insulators.

Correlation exponent Kρ of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model

J. C. Xavier, E. Miranda

We present results for the correlation exponent ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$ of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid description of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice as a function of conduction-electron density and coupling constant. ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$ is obtained from the first derivative of the Fourier transform of the charge-charge correlation function. We also show that the spin correlation function can only be described in this picture if we include logarithmic corrections, a feature that had been previously overlooked. A consistent description of both charge and spin sectors is then obtained. Finally, we show evidence that the spin sector of the dimerized phase at quarter-filling is gapless.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional, two-channel Kondo lattice model

T. Schauerte, Cox, D. L., R. M. Noack +2 more

Employing the density matrix renormalization group method and strong-coupling perturbation theory, we study the phase diagram of the SU(2)xSU(2) Kondo lattice model in one dimension. We show that, at quarter filling, the system can exist in two phases depending on the coupling strength. The weak-coupling phase is dominated by RKKY exchange correlations while the strong-coupling phase is characterized by strong antiferromagnetic correlations of the channel degree of freedom. These two phases are separated by a quantum critical point. For conduction-band fillings of less than one quarter, we find a paramagnetic metallic phase at weak coupling and a ferromagnetic phase at moderate to strong coupling.
