We present quantum Monte Carlo results for the Hubbard model on a ladder using the re-structuring method which employ eigenstates of two-site system on a rung to construct a complete set. From technical reasons we concentrate on the case in which the hopping along the leg is much less than the hopping on the rung. We observe the ground state of the half-filled system is made of singlet-like states described in this paper and its first excited state contains one triplet rung. When the system is lightly doped states composed of an electron and a hole appear on some rungs. We find very few hole-pairing on the rung upon doping up to the quarter-filled case.

We investigate a ladder system with two inequivalent legs, namely, a Hubbard chain and a one-dimensional electron gas. Analytical approximations, the density-matrix renormalization group method, and continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations are used to determine ground-state properties, gaps, and spectral functions of this system at half-filling. Evidence for the existence of four different phases as a function of the Hubbard interaction and the rung hopping is presented. First, a Luttinger liquid exists at very weak interchain hopping. Second, a Kondo-Mott insulator with spin and charge gaps induced by an effective rung exchange coupling is found at moderate interchain hopping or strong Hubbard interaction. Third, a spin-gapped paramagnetic Mott insulator with incommensurate excitations and pairing of doped charges is observed at intermediate values of the rung hopping and the interaction. Fourth, the usual correlated band insulator is recovered for large rung hopping. We show that the wave numbers of the lowest single-particle excitations are different in each insulating phase. In particular, the three gapped phases exhibit markedly different spectral functions. We discuss the relevance of asymmetric two-leg ladder systems as models for atomic wires deposited on a substrate.
In this paper, we have systematically studied the single-hole problem in two-leg Hubbard and $t\ensuremath{-}J$ ladders by large-scale density-matrix renormalization-group calculations. We found that the doped holes in both models behave similarly, while the three-site correlated hopping term is not important in determining the ground-state properties. For more insights, we have also calculated the elementary excitations, i.e., the energy gaps to the excited states of the system. In the strong-rung limit, we found that the doped hole behaves as a Bloch quasiparticle in both systems where the spin and charge of the doped hole are tightly bound together. In the isotropic limit, while the hole still behaves like a quasiparticle in the long-wavelength limit, our results show that its spin and charge components are only loosely bound together inside the quasiparticle, whose internal structure can lead to a visible residual effect which dramatically changes the local structure of the ground-state wave function.
Monte Carlo calculations of the irreducible particle-particle interaction on a two-leg Hubbard ladder doped near half-filling are reported. As the temperature is lowered, this interaction develops structure in momentum space similar to the magnetic susceptibility χ(q) and reflects the development of strong short-range antiferromagnetic correlations. Using this interaction, the eigenfunction of the leading singlet pair eigenvalue is found to have dx2−y2 like symmetry. The single-particle spectral weight is also shown to peak near (π,0) and (0,π) when the ratio of the inter- to intra-chain hopping t⊥/t≃1.5, leading to an increased tendency for pairing.
We extend a Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) algorithm to the Hubbard model containing bond-dependent off-diagonal hoppings, which describes the manganites and other similar systems, such as systems with spin-flip hoppings. To show correctness of this extension, we detect two simple examples of one-dimensional chains. The first one is half-filled and the hopping matrixes between arbitrary nearest neighboring pairs are uniform, i.e., ti,i+1=ti+1,i+2(i=1,2,3,…). The other one is quarter-filled and the hopping matrixes alternate every four lattice constants with ${t}_{i,i+1}{=t}_{i+1,i+2}\ensuremath{\ne}{t}_{i+2,i+3}{=t}_{i+3,i+4}$ (i=1,5,9,…). Results of the two examples are reasonable.
We study the dimensional crossover from one to two dimensions in half-filled and lightly doped, weakly interacting N-leg Hubbard ladders. In this case, the Hubbard ladders are equivalent to an N-band model. Using renormalization-group techniques, we find that the half-filled ladders exhibit (in the spin sector) an odd-even effect only below a crossover energy ${E}_{c}\ensuremath{\propto}\mathrm{exp}[\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}\mathrm{exp}(\ensuremath{\gamma}N)]$ $(\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\ll}1$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\sim}1$ depend on the interaction strength and on the hopping matrix elements): Below Ec, the dominant interactions take place within band pairs $(j,N+1\ensuremath{-}j)$ [and within the band (N+1)/2 for N odd], such that even-leg ladders are an insulating spin liquid, while odd-leg ladders have one gapless spinon mode. In contrast, above the energy scale Ec, all bands are interacting with each other and the system is a two-dimensional- (2D)-like (insulating) antiferromagnet; we obtain an analytical expression for the Hamiltonian which is similar to the 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Bosonization techniques show that in the charge sector the Mott insulator is as well below and above Ec of the same type as in N/2 half-filled two-leg ladders. Doping away from half-filling, we find that the effect of an increasing doping $\ensuremath{\delta}$ is very similar to decreasing the number of legs N: In both cases interactions between unpaired bands are suppressed and thereby the antiferromagnetic correlations reduced. The resulting band pairs form then insulating spin liquids and when doped, there is a spin gap, but phase coherence exists only within the band pairs. At higher doping levels ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}={\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}(N),$ phase coherence between all band pairs sets in and the system becomes a 2D-like d-wave superconductor $[{\ensuremath{\delta}}_{c}(N)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ for $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{N}\ensuremath{\infty}].$
A Quantum Monte Carlo method of calculating operator expectation values for the ground state of the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model on large square lattices is presented, along with some comparisons of the results obtained from this method and alternative methods for 2D lattices. In the simulations the ground state is projected out from an arbitrary state and sampled in a valence\nbond basis spanning the spin singlet subspace. The projection method is then extended to be used on a simplified Hubbard model at half-filling, which is\naptly called the T0-less Hubbard model, for arbitrary relative strengths of the electron hopping and electron-electron repulsion energy parameters. Results for calculated ground state energies in 1D are presented. These calculations are performed using a spin-charge separated basis, in which the valence bonds\nare generalized to also carry charge.
