Phase transitions in the one-dimensional pair-hopping model: A renormalization-group study

Abstract

The phase diagram of a one-dimensional tight-binding model with a pair-hopping term (amplitude V) has been the subject of some controversy. Using two-loop renormalization-group equations and the density matrix renormalization group with lengths L\ensuremath{\le}60, we argue that no spin-gap transition occurs at half-filling for positive V, contrary to recent claims. However, we point out that away from half-filling, a phase-separation transition occurs at finite V. This transition and the spin-gap transition occurring at half-filling and negative V are analyzed numerically.

One-dimensional pair hopping and attractive Hubbard models: A comparative study

Mathias van den Bossche, Michel Caffarel

The low-energy physics of the one-dimensional pair hopping (PH) and attractive Hubbard models are expected to be similar. Based on numerical calculations on small chains, several authors have recently challenged this idea and predicted the existence of a phase transition at half filling and finite positive coupling for the pair-hopping model. We reexamine the controversy by making systematic comparisons between numerical results obtained for the PH and attractive Hubbard models. To do so, we have calculated the Luttinger parameters (spin and charge velocities, stiffnesses, etc.) of the two models using both the density matrix renormalization-group method for large systems and Lancz\'os calculations with twisted boundary conditions for smaller systems. Although most of our results confirm that both models are very similar we have found some important differences in the spin properties for the small sizes considered by previous numerical studies (6-12 sites). However, we show that these differences disappear at larger sizes (14-42 sites) when sufficiently accurate eigenstates are considered. Accordingly, our results strongly suggest that the ground-state phase transition previously found for small systems is a finite size artifact. Interpreting our results within the framework of the Luttinger liquid theory, we discuss the origin of the apparent contradiction between the predictions of the perturbative renormalization-group approach and numerical calculations at small sizes.

Spin gaps in two models of strongly correlated electron systems

Arnold E. Sikkema

Two aspects of strongly correlated electron systems are studied in this thesis. Hubbard-type models are thought to be at the basis of high-critical-temperature superconductivity. One interaction which has not had much study is the nearest-neighbour hopping of on-site singlet pairs. We refine earlier renormalization group arguments and, using the density-matrix renormalization group method, numerically confirm their prediction that a spin gap opens at infinitesimal pair-hopping amplitude V > 0 in the one-dimensional tight-binding model. We also find a phase separation transition at a finite V > 0 as well as a spin-gap transition at a finite V < 0. The exotic magnetic behaviour of heavy-fermion materials involves an interplay between the screening of local moments from each other and the formation of a magnetic state of long range order. While the single-impurity Kondo Hamiltonian is thought to model some aspects of this behaviour, the properties of the Kondo lattice model away from half-filling are largely unknown. We determine the presence of a spin-gap region in the phase diagram of the one-dimensional Heisenberg-Kondo lattice model and make predictions about certain concealed dimerization order parameters.

Ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model: A density-matrix renormalization-group approach

G. P. Zhang

We use the density-matrix renormalization group to calculate the phase diagram of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard chain at half filling. We find that for one specific $U,$ the critical value of ${V}_{c}$ for the charge-density-wave versus spin-density-wave phase transition is smaller than that predicted from the Monte Carlo simulation. Our results are consistent with the strong- and weak-coupling limit results, whereas the previous results from the Monte Carlo simulations deviate from the weak-coupling limit result. As $U$ increases, we find that the first-order phase transition develops gradually. The tricritical point is estimated to occur at ${U}_{c}=4--6,$ not ${U}_{c}=3$ as previously predicted from the Monte Carlo simulation. Due to the topological difference, we observe that with the periodic boundary condition, the phase transition is more abrupt for finite chains of length $N=4M$ than for chains of $N=4M+2,$ where $M$ is an integer, for the same $U$ and $V.$ The difference will diminish in the thermodynamic limit.

Quantum phase transition in a gapped Anderson model: A numerical renormalization group study

Cătălin Paşcu Moca, Adrian Roman

We use the numerical renormalization group method to investigate the spectral properties of a single-impurity Anderson model with a gap $\ensuremath{\delta}$ across the Fermi level in the conduction-electron spectrum. For any finite $\ensuremath{\delta}>0$, at half filling the ground state of the system is always a doublet. Away from half filling a quantum phase transition (QPT) occurs as function of the gap value $\ensuremath{\delta}$, and the system evolves from the strong-coupling (SC) Kondo-type state, corresponding to $\ensuremath{\delta}<{\ensuremath{\delta}}_{C}$ toward a localized moment (LM) regime for $\ensuremath{\delta}>{\ensuremath{\delta}}_{C}$. The opening of the gap leads to the formation of one (two) bound states when the system is in the SC (LM) regime. The evolution across the QPT of their positions and the corresponding weights together with the dynamic properties of the model are investigated.

Ground-State Phase Diagram of a Half-Filled One-Dimensional Extended Hubbard Model

Eric Jeckelmann

The density-matrix renormalization group is used to study the phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) repulsion and hopping t. A critical line V(c)(U) approximately U/2 separates a Mott insulating phase from a charge-density-wave phase. The formation of bound charge excitations for V>2t changes the phase transition from continuous to first-order at a tricritical point U(t) approximately 3.7t, V(t)=2t. A frustrating effective antiferromagnetic spin coupling induces a bond-order-wave phase on the critical line V(c)(U) for U(t)<U less, similar 7t.

Renormalization-group analysis of the two-dimensional Hubbard model

Christoph J. Halboth, Walter Metzner

Salmhofer [Commun. Math. Phys. 194, 249 (1998)] recently developed a new renormalization-group method for interacting Fermi systems, where the complete flow from the bare action of a microscopic model to the effective low-energy action, as a function of a continuously decreasing infrared cutoff, is given by a differential flow equation which is local in the flow parameter. We apply this approach to the repulsive two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hopping amplitudes. The flow equation for the effective interaction is evaluated numerically on a one-loop level. The effective interactions diverge at a finite-energy scale which is exponentially small for small bare interactions. To analyze the nature of the instabilities signaled by the diverging interactions we extend Salmhofer's renormalization group for the calculation of susceptibilities. We compute the singlet superconducting susceptibilities for various pairing symmetries, and also charge- and spin-density susceptibilities. Depending on the choice of the model parameters (hopping amplitudes, interaction strength, and band filling) we find commensurate and incommensurate antiferromagnetic instabilities or d-wave superconductivity as leading instability. We present the resulting phase diagram in the vicinity of half-filling, and also results for the density dependence of the critical energy scale.
