Ground states of the infinite q-deformed Heisenberg ferromagnet

Abstract

We set up a general structure for the analysis of ``frustration-free ground states'', or ``zero-energy states'', i.e., states minimizing each term in a lattice interaction individually. The nesting of the finite volume ground state spaces is described by a generalized inductive limit of observable algebras. The limit space of this inductive system has a state space which is canonically isomorphic (as a compact convex set) to the set of zero-energy states. We show that for Heisenberg ferromagnets, and for generalized valence bond solid states, the limit space is an abelian C*-algebra, and all zero-energy states are translationally invariant or periodic. For the $q$-deformed spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg ferromagnet in one dimension (i.e., the XXZ-chain with S$_q$U(2)-invariant boundary conditions) the limit space is an extension of the non-commutative algebra of compact operators by two points, corresponding to the ``all spins up'' and the ``all spins down'' states, respectively. These are the only translationally invariant zero-energy states. The remaining ones are parametrized by the density matrices on a Hilbert space, and converge weakly to the ``all up'' (resp.\ ``all down'') state for shifts to $-\infty$ (resp.\ $+\infty$).

The complete set of ground states of the ferromagnetic XXZ chains

Tohru Koma, Bruno Nachtergaele

We show that the well-known translation invariant ground states and the recently discovered kink and antikink ground states are the complete set of pure infinite-volume ground states (in the sense of local stability) of the spin-5 ferromagnetic XXZ chains with Hamiltonian H = -EJS^S^ 4-Si 2) S% + ASi^S^l for all A > 1, and all 5 € |N.For the isotropic model (A = 1) we show that all ground states are translation invariant. For the proof of these statements we propose a strategy for demonstrating completeness of the list of the pure infinite-volume ground states of a quantum many-body system, of which the present results for the XXX and XXZ chains can be seen as an example. The result for A > 1 can also be proved by an easy extension to general S of the method used in [T.Matsui, Lett.Math.Phys.37 (1996) 397] for the spin-1/2 ferromagnetic XXZ chain with A > 1.However, our proof is e-print archive:

Valence bond ground states in quantum antiferromagnets and quadratic algebras

F C Alcaraz, V Rittenberg

The wavefunctions corresponding to the zero-energy eigenvalue of a one-dimensional quantum chain Hamiltonian can be written in a simple way using quadratic algebras. Hamiltonians describing stochastic processes have stationary states given by such wavefunctions and various quadratic algebras have been found and applied to several diffusion processes. We show that similar methods can also be applied for equilibrium processes. As an example, for a class of q -deformed O( N ) symmetric antiferromagnetic quantum chains, we give the zero-energy wavefunctions for periodic boundary conditions corresponding to momenta zero and π. We also consider free and various non-diagonal boundary conditions and give the corresponding wavefunctions. All correlation lengths are derived.

On the uniqueness of translation-invariant ground states of the $S=1$ Heisenberg and $J$--$D$ antiferromagnetic chains

Hal Tasaki

Using the analytic machinery and numerical inputs of OpenAI's proofs of the Haldane gap, we prove uniqueness of the translation-invariant ground state of the infinite $S=1$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain and of the $J$-$D$ model for sufficiently small $|D|$. Uniqueness is among all translation-invariant ground states in the operator-algebraic sense, without assuming a gap or spin-rotation symmetry for a competing state. The proof combines concentration of the spatial transfer spectrum, an exponentially small low-temperature free-energy correction, and a Golden--Thompson comparison for separated local observables. The unique translation-invariant state is pure, locally unique and gapped, and continuous in $D$. The ground states of even periodic chains and odd open chains with equal positive endpoint fields converge to this state along their full sequences, uniformly in $D$, with a stretched-exponential local rate. Every choice of ground states of open chains without endpoint magnetic fields has the same local limit. These conclusions do not establish uniqueness among arbitrary nontranslation-invariant ground states of the infinite chain. The author formulated the problems and proposed the core strategies. ChatGPT Astra made substantial contributions to developing the proofs and preparing the manuscript.

The Spectral Gap for Some Spin Chains With Discrete Symmetry Breaking

Bruno Nachtergaele

We prove that for any finite set of generalized valence bond solid (GVBS) states of a quantum spin chain there exists a translation invariant finite-range Hamiltonian for which this set is the set of ground states. This result implies that there are GVBS models with arbitrary broken discrete symmetries that are described as combinations of lattice translations, lattice reflections, and local unitary or anti-unitary transformations. We also show that all GVBS models that satisfy some natural conditions have a spectral gap. The existence of a spectral gap is obtained by applying a simple and quite general strategy for proving lower bounds on the spectral gap of the generator of a classical or quantum spin dynamics. This general scheme is interesting in its own right and therefore, although the basic idea is not new, we present it in a system-independent setting. The results are illustrated with an number of examples. Keywords: quantum spin chains, Heisenberg model, spectral gap, symmetr...
