Abstract

We discuss the effects of a weak random external potential on the properties of the dilute Bose gas at zero temperature. The results recently obtained by Huang and Meng for the depletion of the condensate and of the superfluid density are recovered. Results for the shift of the velocity of sound as well as for its damping due to collisions with the external field are presented. The damping of phonons is calculated also for dense superfluids.

Thermodynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate with weak disorder

G. M. Falco, Axel Pelster, R. Graham

We consider the thermodynamics of a homogeneous superfluid dilute Bose gas in the presence of weak quenched disorder. Following the zero-temperature approach of Huang and Meng, we diagonalize the Hamiltonian of a dilute Bose gas in an external random $\ensuremath{\delta}$-correlated potential by means of a Bogoliubov transformation. We extend this approach to finite temperature by combining the Popov and the many-body $T$-matrix approximations. This approach permits us to include the quasiparticle interactions within this temperature range. We derive the disorder-induced shifts of the Bose-Einstein critical temperature and of the temperature for the onset of superfluidity by approaching the transition points from below, i.e., from the superfluid phase. Our results lead to a phase diagram consistent with that of the finite-temperature theory of Lopatin and Vinokur which was based on the replica method, and in which the transition points were approached from above.

Hard-sphere Bose gas in random external potentials

Kerson Huang, Hsin‐Fei Meng

We consider a dilute hard-sphere Bose gas in random external potentials at low temperatures, in D=3, using the technique of pseudopotentials and the Bogoliubov transformation. At absolute zero, the random potentials can deplete the Bose condensate, though not completely. On the other hand, they generate an amount of normal fluid equal to 4/3 the condensate depletion. This is a localization effect that can destroy superfluidity at absolute zero. General features of the superfluid density in the neighborhood of this transition point agree qualitatively with experimental results on helium in porous media.

Bose-Bose mixtures in a weak-disorder potential: Fluctuations and superfluidity

Abdelâali Boudjemâa, Karima Abbas

We study the properties of a homogeneous dilute Bose-Bose gas in a weak-disorder potential at zero temperature. By using the perturbation theory, we calculate the disorder corrections to the condensate density, the equation of state, the compressibility, and the superfluid density as a function of density, strength of disorder, and miscibility parameter. It is found that the disorder potential may lead to modifying the miscibility-immiscibility condition and a full miscible phase turns out to be impossible in the presence of the disorder. We show that the intriguing interplay of the disorder and intra- and interspecies interactions may strongly influence the localization of each component, the quantum fluctuations, and the compressibility, as well as the superfluidity of the system.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in weak anisotropic disorder

Branko Nikolić, Antun Balaž, Axel Pelster

Here we study properties of a homogeneous dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in a weak anisotropic random potential with Lorentzian correlation at zero temperature. To this end we solve perturbatively the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to second order in the random potential strength and obtain analytic results for the disorder ensemble averages of both the condensate and the superfluid depletion, the equation of state, and the sound velocity. For a pure contact interaction and a vanishing correlation length, we reproduce the seminal results of Huang and Meng, which were originally derived within a Bogoliubov theory around a disorder-averaged background field. For dipolar interaction and isotropic Lorentzian-correlated disorder, we obtain results which are qualitatively similar to the case of an isotropic Gaussian-correlated disorder. In the case of an anisotropic disorder, the physical observables show characteristic anisotropies which arise from the formation of fragmented dipolar condensates in the local minima of the disorder potential.

Bose-Einstein-condensed systems in random potentials

Vyacheslav I. Yukalov, R. Graham

The properties of systems with Bose-Einstein condensate in external time-independent random potentials are investigated in the frame of a self-consistent stochastic mean-field approximation. General considerations are presented, which are valid for finite temperatures, arbitrary strengths of the interaction potential, and for arbitrarily strong disorder potentials. The special case of a spatially uncorrelated random field is then treated in more detail. It is shown that the system consists of three components, condensed particles, uncondensed particles, and a glassy density fraction, but that the pure Bose glass phase with only a glassy density does not appear. The theory predicts a first-order phase transition for increasing disorder parameter, where the condensate fraction and the superfluid fraction simultaneously jump to zero. The influence of disorder on the ground-state energy, the stability conditions, the compressibility, the structure factor, and the sound velocity are analyzed. The uniform ideal condensed gas is shown to be always stochastically unstable, in the sense that an infinitesimally weak disorder destroys the Bose-Einstein condensate, returning the system to the normal state; but the uniform Bose-condensed system with finite repulsive interactions becomes stochastically stable and exists in a finite interval of the disorder parameter.

Thermodynamics of the Superfluid Dilute Bose Gas with Disorder

A. V. Lopatin, V. M. Vinokur

We generalize the Beliaev-Popov diagrammatic technique for the problem of interacting dilute Bose gas with weak disorder. Averaging over disorder is implemented by the replica method. The low-energy asymptotic form of the Green function confirms that the low-energy excitations of the superfluid dirty-boson system are sound waves with velocity renormalized by the disorder and additional dissipation due to the impurity scattering. We find the thermodynamic potential and the superfluid density at any temperature below the superfluid transition temperature (but outside the Ginzburg region) and derive the phase diagram in temperature vs disorder plane.
