Ising Phases of Heisenberg Ladders in a Magnetic Field

Abstract

We show that Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions can substantially modify the phase diagram of spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladders in a magnetic field provided they compete with exchange. For nonfrustrated ladders, they induce a local magnetization along the DM vector that turns the gapless intermediate phase into an Ising phase with broken translational symmetry, while for frustrated ladders, they extend the Ising order of the half-integer plateau to the surrounding gapless phases of the purely Heisenberg case. Implications for experimental ladder and dimer systems are discussed.

Heisenberg spin- 12 XXZ chain in the presence of electric and magnetic fields

Pradeep K. Thakur, P. Durganandini

We study the interplay of electric and magnetic order in the one-dimensional Heisenberg spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain with large Ising anisotropy in the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction and with longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields, interpreting the DM interaction as a coupling between the local electric polarization and an external electric field. We obtain the ground state phase diagram using the density matrix renormalization group method and compute various ground state quantities like the magnetization, staggered magnetization, electric polarization and spin correlation functions, etc. In the presence of both longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields, there are three different phases corresponding to a gapped N\'eel phase with antiferromagnetic (AF) order, gapped saturated phase, and a critical incommensurate gapless phase. The external electric field modifies the phase boundaries but does not lead to any new phases. Both external magnetic fields and electric fields can be used to tune between the phases. We also show that the transverse magnetic field induces a vector chiral order in the N\'eel phase (even in the absence of an electric field) which can be interpreted as an electric polarization in a direction parallel to the AF order.

Condensation of magnons and spinons in a frustrated ladder

J.-B. Fouet, Frédéric Mila, D. Clarke +4 more

Motivated by the ever-increasing experimental effort devoted to the properties of frustrated quantum magnets in a magnetic field, we present a careful and detailed theoretical analysis of a one-dimensional version of this problem, a frustrated ladder with a magnetization plateau at $m=1∕2$. We show that even for purely isotropic Heisenberg interactions, the magnetization curve exhibits a rather complex behavior that can be fully accounted for in terms of simple elementary excitations. The introduction of anisotropic interactions (e.g., Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions) modifies significantly the picture and reveals an essential difference between integer and fractional plateaus. In particular, anisotropic interactions generically open a gap in the region between the plateaus, but we show that this gap closes upon entering fractional plateaus. All of these conclusions, based on analytical arguments, are supported by extensive density matrix renormalization group calculations.

Exact Ground States of Frustrated Spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg and Heisenberg Ladders in a Magnetic Field

Jozef Strečka, Frédéric Michaud, Frédéric Mila

Ground states of the frustrated spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg two-leg ladder with Heisenberg intra-rung coupling and only Ising interaction along legs and diagonals are rigorously found by taking advantage of local conservation of the total spin on each rung. The constructed ground-state phase diagram of the frustrated spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg ladder is then compared with the analogous phase diagram of the fully quantum spin-1 Heisenberg two-leg ladder obtained by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. Both investigated spin models exhibit quite similar magnetization scenarios, which involve intermediate plateaux at one-quarter, one-half and threequarters of the saturation magnetization.

Interplay between symmetric exchange anisotropy, uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and magnetic fields in the phase diagram of quantum magnets and superconductors

Ion Garate, Ian K. Affleck

We theoretically study the joint influence of uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions, symmetric exchange anisotropy (with its axis parallel to the DM vector), and arbitrarily oriented magnetic fields on one-dimensional spin $1∕2$ antiferromagnets. We show that the zero-temperature phase diagram contains three competing phases: (i) an antiferromagnet with Neel vector in the plane spanned by the DM vector and the magnetic field, (ii) a dimerized antiferromagnet with Neel vector perpendicular to both the DM vector and the magnetic field, and (iii) a gapless Luttinger liquid. Phase (i) is destroyed by a small magnetic field component along the DM vector and is furthermore unstable beyond a critical value of easy-plane anisotropy, which we estimate using Abelian and non-Abelian bosonization along with perturbative renormalization group. We propose a mathematical equivalent of the spin model in a one-dimensional Josephson junction array located in proximity to a bulk superconductor. We discuss the analogues of the magnetic phases in the superconducting context and comment on their experimental viability.

Frustration-induced plateaus in S≥12 Heisenberg spin ladders

Frédéric Michaud, Tommaso Coletta, Salvatore R. Manmana +2 more

We study the $T=0$ magnetization of frustrated two-leg spin ladders with arbitrary value of the spin $S$. In the strong-rung limit, we use degenerate perturbation theory to prove that frustration leads to magnetization plateaus at fractional values of the magnetization for all spins $S$ and to determine the critical ratios of parallel to diagonal inter-rung couplings for the appearance of these plateaus. These ratios depend both on the plateau and on the spin. To confirm these results and to investigate the properties of these ladders away from the strong-coupling limit, we have performed extensive density-matrix renormalization-group calculations for $S\ensuremath{\le}2$. For large enough inter-rung couplings, all plateaus simply disappear, leading to a magnetization curve typical of integer-spin chains in a magnetic field. The intermediate region turns out to be surprisingly rich however, with, upon increasing the inter-rung couplings, the development of magnetization jumps and, in some cases, the appearance of one or more phase transitions inside a given plateau.

Ising order in a magnetized Heisenberg chain subject to a uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Yang‐Hao Chan, Wen Jin, Hong‐Chen Jiang +1 more

We report a combined analytical and density matrix renormalized group study of the antiferromagnetic $XXZ$ spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chain subject to a uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction and a transverse magnetic field. The numerically determined phase diagram of this model, which features two ordered Ising phases and a critical Luttinger liquid, one with fully broken spin-rotational symmetry, agrees well with the predictions of Garate and Affleck [I. Garate and I. Affleck, Phys. Rev. B 81, 144419 (2010)]. We also confirm the prevalence of the ${N}^{z}$ N\'eel Ising order in the regime of comparable DM and magnetic field magnitudes.
