Abstract

We study a polarized Fermi gas and demonstrate that Fano-Feshbach (FF) resonances lead to the pairing of fermions and holes into long living massive bosonic modes (bifermions and biholes), which can be viewed as signatures of a first order quantum phase transition. These modes, which are neither conventional Cooper pairs nor closed channel bosonic dimers, have a peculiar dispersion relation and appear already in the weak coupling limit, i.e. for large FF detunings. Our result is in accord with claims of Schunck \emph{et al.} [cond-mat/0702066] that by stabilizing the normal state the population imbalance still allows effect of s-wave fermionic pairing.

Fermionic Superfluidity with Imbalanced Spin Populations

Martin W. Zwierlein, André Schirotzek, Christian H. Schunck +1 more

We established superfluidity in a two-state mixture of ultracold fermionic atoms with imbalanced state populations. This study relates to the long-standing debate about the nature of the superfluid state in Fermi systems. Indicators for superfluidity were condensates of fermion pairs and vortices in rotating clouds. For strong interactions, near a Feshbach resonance, superfluidity was observed for a broad range of population imbalances. We mapped out the superfluid regime as a function of interaction strength and population imbalance and characterized the quantum phase transition to the normal state, known as the Pauli limit of superfluidity.

Pairing and condensation in a resonant Bose-Fermi mixture

Elisa Fratini, P. Pieri

We study by diagrammatic means a Bose-Fermi mixture, with boson-fermion coupling tuned by a Fano-Feshbach resonance. For increasing coupling, the growing boson-fermion pairing correlations progressively reduce the boson condensation temperature and make it eventually vanish at a critical coupling. Such quantum critical point depends very weakly on the population imbalance and, for vanishing boson densities, coincides with that found for the polaron-molecule transition in a strongly imbalanced Fermi gas, thus bridging two quite distinct physical systems.

Density, spin, and pairing instabilities in polarized ultracold Fermi gases

Inti Sodemann, D. A. Pesin, Allan H. MacDonald

We study the influence of population imbalance on the pairing, spin, and density instabilities of a two-component ideal Fermi gas after a sudden quench of interactions near a Feshbach resonance. Over a large region of parameters the pairing instability is dominated by finite-momentum pairing, suggesting the possibility of observing Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov--like states in the unstable initial dynamics. Long-wavelength density instabilities are found on the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer side of the resonance, and are interpreted as a precursor of the phase separation expected at equilibrium. On the Bose-Einstein-condensate side of the resonance, the pairing instability is present for scattering lengths larger than a critical value that is only weakly dependent on population imbalance and always smaller than the scattering length at which the Stoner-like spin instability occurs.

Nesting and lifetime effects in the FFLO state of quasi-one-dimensional imbalanced Fermi gases

Heron Caldas, M. A. Contínentino

Motivated by the recent experimental realization of a candidate to the Fulde-Ferrell (FF) and the Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) states in one dimensional (1D) atomic Fermi gases, we study the quantum phase transitions in these enigmatic, finite momentum-paired superfluids. We focus on the FF state and investigate the effects of the induced interaction on the stability of the FFLO phase in homogeneous spin-imbalanced quasi-1D Fermi gases at zero temperature. When this is taken into account we find a direct transition from the fully polarized to the FFLO state. Also, we consider the effect of a finite lifetime of the quasi-particles states in the normal-superfluid instability. In the limit of long lifetimes, the lifetime effect is irrelevant and the transition is directly from the fully polarized to the FFLO state. We show, however, that for sufficiently short lifetimes there is a quantum critical point (QCP), at a finite value of the mismatch of the Fermi wave-vectors of the different quasi-particles, that we fully characterize. In this case the transition is from the FFLO phase to a normal partially polarized state with increasing mismatch.

Phase diagram for the trapped p -wave fermionic superfluid with population imbalance

Ammar A. Kirmani, Khandker Quader, Maxim Dzero

We consider the problem of spin-triplet $p$-wave superfluid pairing with total spin projection ${m}_{s}=0$ in atomic Fermi gas across the Feshbach resonance. We allow for imbalanced populations and take into account the effects due to the presence of a harmonic trapping potential. Within the mean-field approximation for the one- and two-channel pairing models we show that the $p$-wave superfluid state has the lowest energy up to some distance from the trap center, the distance depending on population imbalance and the side of the Feshbach resonance (BCS or BEC) the system is in. Beyond this, the system is in the normal state. Since the system, even in the presence of the harmonic trap, is invariant under O(3) space rotation, the superfluid cores which emerge in the trap are comprised of states that are degenerate with respect to the ``orbital ferromagnet'' state, ${p}_{x}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}i{p}_{y}$, as well as the ones in which all angular momentum components of the order parameter are nonzero, provided the modulus of the order parameter maintains a fixed magnitude.

BEC-BCS crossover, phase transitions and phase separation in polarized resonantly-paired superfluids

Daniel E. Sheehy, Leo Radzihovsky

We study resonantly-paired s-wave superfluidity in a degenerate gas of two species (hyperfine states labeled by ↑, ↓) of fermionic atoms when the numbers N↑ and N↓ of the two species are unequal, i.e., the system is "polarized." We find that the continuous crossover from the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) limit of tightly-bound diatomic molecules to the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) limit of weakly correlated Cooper pairs, studied extensively at equal populations, is interrupted by a variety of distinct phenomena under an imposed population difference ΔN ≡ N↑ - N↓. Our findings are summarized by a "polarization" (ΔN) versus Feshbach-resonance detuning (δ) zero-temperature phase diagram, which exhibits regions of phase separation, a periodic FFLO superfluid, a polarized normal Fermi gas and a polarized molecular superfluid consisting of a molecular condensate and a fully polarized Fermi gas. We describe numerous experimental signatures of such phases and the transitions between them, in particular focusing on their spatial structure in the inhomogeneous environment of an atomic trap. © 2006 Elsevier Inc.
