Wilson-Like Real-Space Renormalization Group and Low-Energy Effective Spectrum of the XXZ Chain in the Critical Regime

Abstract

We present a novel real-space renormalization group(RG) for the one-dimensional XXZ model in the critical regime, reconsidering the role of the cut-off parameter in Wilson's RG for the Kondo impurity problem. We then demonstrate the RG calculation for the XXZ chain with the free boundary. Comparing the hierarchical structure of the obtained low-energy spectrum with the Bethe ansatz result, we find that the proper scaling dimension is reproduced as a fixed point of the RG transformation.

Kondo effect in XXZ spin chains

Akira Furusaki, Takashi Hikihara

The Kondo effect in a one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $\mathrm{XXZ}$ model in the gapless $\mathrm{XY}$ regime $(\ensuremath{-}1<\ensuremath{\Delta}<~1)$ is studied both analytically and numerically. In our model an impurity spin $(S=1/2)$ is coupled to a single spin in the $\mathrm{XXZ}$ spin chain. Perturbative renormalization-group (RG) analysis is performed for various limiting cases to deduce low-energy fixed points. It is shown that in the ground state the impurity spin is screened by forming a singlet with a spin in the host $\mathrm{XXZ}$ chain. In the antiferromagnetic side $(0<\ensuremath{\Delta}<~1)$ the host chain is cut into two semi-infinite chains by the singlet. In the ferromagnetic side $(\ensuremath{-}1<\ensuremath{\Delta}<0),$ on the other hand, the host $\mathrm{XXZ}$ chain remains as a single chain through ``healing'' of a weakened bond in the low-energy (long-distance) limit. The density-matrix renormalization-group method is used to study the size scaling of finite-size energy gaps and the power-law decay of correlation functions in the ground state. The numerical results are in good agreement with the predictions of the RG analysis. Low-temperature behaviors of specific heat and susceptibility are also discussed.

Boundary quantum critical phenomena with entanglement renormalization

Glen Evenbly, Robert N. C. Pfeifer, Vicent Picó +4 more

We propose the use of entanglement renormalization techniques to study boundary critical phenomena on a lattice system. The multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA), in its scale invariant version, offers a very compact approximation to quantum critical ground states. Here we show that, by adding a boundary to the MERA, an accurate approximation to the ground state of a semi-infinite critical chain with an open boundary is obtained, from which one can extract boundary scaling operators and their scaling dimensions. As in Wilson's renormalization-group formulation of the Kondo problem, our construction produces, as a side result, an effective chain displaying explicit separation of energy scales. We present benchmark results for the quantum Ising and quantum XX models with free and fixed boundary conditions.

Scale-free property and edge state of Wilson’s numerical renormalization group

Kouichi Okunishi, Tomotoshi Nishino

We discuss the scale-free property of Wilson's numerical renormalization group (NRG) for the Kondo-impurity problem. The single-particle state of the effective Hamiltonian with a cutoff $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ is described by the wave-packet basis having the scale-free property. The energy scale of the system can be controlled by the lattice translation of the wave-packet basis with no reference of rescaling of the lattice space. We also analyze the role of the Kondo interaction in the context of wave-packet basis and then discuss the scaling and renormalization of the Kondo coupling. In addition, we clarify the role of the edge state in the lowest energy scale of Wilson NRG.

Wilson's numerical renormalization group and AdS_3 geometry

Kouichi Okunishi

We discuss the relation between the Wilson's numerical renormalization group(NRG) for the Kondo impurity problem and a field theory in the background AdS_3 space time, where the radial coordinate plays a role of the controlling parameter of the effective mass scale. We find that the Wilson NRG can be described by the boundary Rindler field and then the cutoff parameter λof the Wilson NRG is related to the AdS radius L through λ= 2k_F/ωL, where k_F is the effective Fermi wave number. It is also found that the Rindler space is discretized with the lattice space of a=π/k_F.

Kondo Problem and Related One-dimensional Quantum Systems: Bethe Ansatz Solution and Boundary Conformal Field Theory

Satoshi Fujimoto, Norio Kawakami

We review some exact results on Kondo impurity systems derived from Bethe-ansatz solutions and boundary conformal field theory with particular emphasis on universal aspects of the phenomenon. The finite-size spectra characterizing the low-energy fixed point are computed from the Bethe-ansatz solutions of various models related to the Kondo problem. Using the finite-size scaling argument, we investigate their exact critical properties. We also discuss that a universal relation between the Kondo effect and the impurity effect in one-dimensional quantum systems usefully expedites our understanding of these different phenomena.

Renormalization group analysis of the many-body localization transition in the random-field XXZ chain

Jacopo Niedda, Giacomo Bracci-Testasecca, Giuseppe Magnifico +3 more

The spectral properties of the Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain with random fields are analyzed in light of recent works on the renormalization-group flow of the Anderson model in infinite dimension. We reconstruct the β function of the order parameter from the numerical data, and observe that it may not admit a one-parameter scaling form and a simple Wilson-Fisher fixed point. Rather, it appears to be more compatible with a two-parameter, Berezinskii–Kosterlitz-Thouless-like flow with a line of fixed points (the many-body localized phase) terminating at the localization transition critical point. We argue that this renormalization group framework provides a more coherent and intuitive explanation of numerical data, up to the system sizes available with the present technology.
