Abstract

We study localized modes in binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates embedded in one-dimensional optical lattices. We report a diversity of asymmetric modes and investigate their dynamics. We concentrate on the cases where one of the components is dominant, i.e., has a much larger number of atoms than the other one, and where both components have the numbers of atoms of the same order but different symmetries. In the first case we propose a method of systematically obtaining the modes, considering the ``small'' component as bifurcating from the continuum spectrum. A generalization of this approach combined with the use of the symmetry of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations allows for obtaining breather modes, which are also presented.

Symmetry breaking in a localized interacting binary Bose-Einstein condensate in a bichromatic optical lattice

Yongshan Cheng, Sadhan K. Adhikari

By direct numerical simulation of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation using the split-step Fourier spectral method, we study different aspects of the localization of a cigar-shaped interacting binary (two-component) Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a one-dimensional bichromatic quasiperiodic optical-lattice potential, as used in a recent experiment on the localization of a BEC [Roati et al., Nature 453, 895 (2008)]. We consider two types of localized states: (i) when both localized components have a maximum of density at the origin $x=0$, and (ii) when the first component has a maximum of density and the second a minimum of density at $x=0$. In the noninteracting case, the density profiles are symmetric around $x=0$. We numerically study the breakdown of this symmetry due to interspecies and intraspecies interactions acting on the two components. Where possible, we have compared the numerical results with a time-dependent variational analysis. We also demonstrate the stability of the localized symmetry-broken BEC states under small perturbation.

Localized modes of binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates in nonlinear optical lattices

F. Kh. Abdullaev, A. Gammal, Mario Salerno +1 more

The properties of the localized states of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a nonlinear periodic potential (nonlinear optical lattice) are investigated. We discuss the existence of different types of solitons and study their stability by means of analytical and numerical approaches. The symmetry properties of the localized states with respect to nonlinear optical lattices are also investigated. We show that nonlinear optical lattices allow the existence of bright soliton modes with equal symmetry in both components and bright localized modes of mixed symmetry type, as well as dark-bright bound states and bright modes on periodic backgrounds. In spite of the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the problem, the fundamental symmetric localized modes undergo a delocalizing transition when the strength of the nonlinear optical lattice is varied. This transition is associated with the existence of an unstable solution, which exhibits a shrinking (decaying) behavior for slightly overcritical (undercritical) variations in the number of atoms.

Displaced dynamics of binary mixtures in linear and nonlinear optical lattices

Golam Ali Sekh, Mario Salerno, Aparna Saha +1 more

The dynamical behavior of matter-wave solitons of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in combined linear and nonlinear optical lattices (OLs) is investigated. In particular, the dependence of the frequency of the oscillating dynamics resulting from initially slightly displaced components is investigated both analytically, by means of a variational effective potential approach for the reduced collective coordinate dynamics of the soliton, and numerically, by direct integrations of the mean field equations of the BEC mixture. We show that for small initial displacements binary solitons can be viewed as point masses connected by elastic springs of strengths related to the amplitude of the OL and to the intra- and interspecies interactions. Analytical expressions of symmetric and antisymmetric mode frequencies are derived and occurrence of beatings phenomena in the displaced dynamics is predicted. These expressions are shown to give a very good estimation of the oscillation frequencies for different values of the intraspecies interatomic scattering length, as confirmed by direct numerical integrations of the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPE) of the mixture. The possibility to use displaced dynamics for indirect measurements of BEC mixture characteristics such as number of atoms and interatomic interactions is also suggested.

Collective excitations of trapped binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensed gases

Robert Graham, Daniel F. Walls

The linearized time-dependent coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations describing the long-wavelength excitations of Bose-Einstein condensed binary mixtures are solved in harmonic traps for the case where only the binary phase is present. The dispersion law contains two branches whose dependence on the quantum numbers of the modes is the same as for a one-component condensate, but with different prefactors, depending on the ratios of the three $s$-wave scattering lengths of the two atomic species. In the general case where the binary phase in the trap coexists with one or both one-component phases, the mode spectrum depends on the geometry of the interphase boundaries due to the boundary conditions there. Measurements of the oscillation frequencies as in recent experiments with modulated traps would yield very detailed information on this system.

Discrete solitons of spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Mario Salerno, F. Kh. Abdullaev

We study localized nonlinear excitations of a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with spin-orbit coupling in a deep optical lattice (OL). We use Wannier functions to derive a tight-binding model that includes the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) at the discrete level in the form of a generalized discrete nonlinear Schödinger equation. Spectral properties are investigated and the existence and stability of discrete solitons and breathers with different symmetry properties with respect to the OL is demonstrated. We show that the symmetry of the modes can be changed from on-site to inter-site and to asymmetric modes simply by changing the interspecies interaction. Asymmetric modes appear to be novel modes intrinsic of the SOC.

Symmetric and asymmetric solitons in linearly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in optical lattices

Arthur Gubeskys, Boris A. Malomed

We study spontaneous symmetry breaking in a system of two parallel quasi-one-dimensional traps (cores), equipped with optical lattices (OLs) and filled with a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The cores are linearly coupled by tunneling (the model may also be interpreted in terms of spatial solitons in parallel planar optical waveguides with a periodic modulation of the refractive index). Analysis of the corresponding system of linearly coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPEs) reveals that spectral band gaps of the single GPE split into subgaps. Symmetry breaking in two-component BEC solitons is studied in cases of the attractive (AA) and repulsive (RR) nonlinearity in both traps; the mixed situation, with repulsion in one trap and attraction in the other (RA), is considered too. In all the cases, stable asymmetric solitons are found, bifurcating from symmetric or antisymmetric ones (and destabilizing them), in the AA and RR systems, respectively. In either case, bistability is predicted, with a nonbifurcating stable branch, either antisymmetric or symmetric, coexisting with asymmetric ones. Solitons destabilized by the bifurcation tend to rearrange themselves into their stable asymmetric counterparts. In addition to the fundamental solitons, branches of twisted (odd) solitons in the AA system, and twisted bound states of fundamental solitons in both AA and RR systems, are found too. The impact of a phase mismatch, $\ensuremath{\Delta}$, between the OLs in the two cores is also studied. It is concluded that $\ensuremath{\Delta}=\ensuremath{\pi}∕2$ only mildly deforms the picture, while $\ensuremath{\Delta}=\ensuremath{\pi}$ changes it drastically, replacing the symmetry-breaking bifurcations by pseudobifurcations, with the branch of asymmetric solutions asymptotically approaching its symmetric or antisymmetric counterpart (in the AA and RR system, respectively), rather than splitting off from it. Also considered is a related model, for a binary BEC in a single-core trap with the OL, assuming that the two species (representing different spin states of the same atom) are coupled by linear interconversion. In that case, the symmetry-breaking bifurcations in the AA and RR models switch their character, if the interspecies nonlinear interaction becomes stronger than the intraspecies nonlinearity.
