Abstract

The properties of the localized states of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a nonlinear periodic potential (nonlinear optical lattice) are investigated. We discuss the existence of different types of solitons and study their stability by means of analytical and numerical approaches. The symmetry properties of the localized states with respect to nonlinear optical lattices are also investigated. We show that nonlinear optical lattices allow the existence of bright soliton modes with equal symmetry in both components and bright localized modes of mixed symmetry type, as well as dark-bright bound states and bright modes on periodic backgrounds. In spite of the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the problem, the fundamental symmetric localized modes undergo a delocalizing transition when the strength of the nonlinear optical lattice is varied. This transition is associated with the existence of an unstable solution, which exhibits a shrinking (decaying) behavior for slightly overcritical (undercritical) variations in the number of atoms.

Gap-type dark localized modes in a Bose–Einstein condensate with optical lattices

Liangwei Zeng, Jianhua Zeng

Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) exhibits a variety of fascinating and unexpected macroscopic phenomena, and has attracted sustained attention in recent years—particularly in the field of solitons and associated nonlinear phenomena. Meanwhile, optical lattices have emerged as a versatile toolbox for understanding the properties and controlling the dynamics of BEC, among which the realization of bright gap solitons is an iconic result. However, the dark gap solitons are still experimentally unproven, and their properties in more than one dimension remain unknown. In light of this, we describe, numerically and theoretically, the formation and stability properties of gap-type dark localized modes in the context of ultracold atoms trapped in optical lattices. Two kinds of stable dark localized modes—gap solitons and soliton clusters—are predicted in both the one- and two-dimensional geometries. The vortical counterparts of both modes are also constructed in two dimensions. A unique feature is the existence of a nonlinear Bloch-wave background on which all above gap modes are situated. By employing linear-stability analysis and direct simulations, stability regions of the predicted modes are obtained. Our results offer the possibility of observing dark gap localized structures with cutting-edge techniques in ultracold atoms experiments and beyond, including in optics with photonic crystals and lattices.

Dark-in-bright solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions

We demonstrate a possibility to generate localized states in effectively one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with a negative scattering length in the form of a dark soliton in the presence of an optical lattice (OL) and/or a parabolic magnetic trap. We connect such structures with twisted localized modes (TLMs) that were previously found in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Families of these structures are found as functions of the OL strength, tightness of the magnetic trap and chemical potential, and their stability regions are identified. Stable bound states of two TLMs are also found. In the case when the TLMs are unstable, their evolution is investigated by means of direct simulations, demonstrating that they transform into large-amplitude fundamental solitons. An analytical approach is also developed, showing that two or several fundamental solitons, with the phase shift π between adjacent ones, may form stable bound states, with parameters quite close to those of the TLMs revealed by simulations. TLM structures are also found numerically and explained analytically in the case when the OL is absent, the condensate being confined only by the magnetic trap.

Nonlinear localized modes in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Santiago Rojas-Rojas, Rodrigo A. Vicencio, Mario I. Molina +1 more

Modulational instability and discrete matter wave solitons in dipolar BECs, loaded into a deep optical lattice, are investigated analytically and numerically. The process of modulational instability of nonlinear plane matter waves in a dipolar nonlinear lattice is studied and the regions of instability are established. The existence and stability of bulk discrete solitons are analyzed analytically and confirmed by numerical simulations. In marked contrast with the usual discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger behavior (no dipolar interactions), we found a region where the two fundamental modes are simultaneously unstable, allowing enhanced mobility across the lattice for large norm values. To study the existence and properties of surface discrete solitons, an analysis of the dimer configuration is performed. The properties of symmetric and antisymmetric modes including stability diagrams and bifurcations are investigated in closed form. For the case of a bulk medium, properties of fundamental on-site and intersite localized modes are analyzed. On-site and intersite surface localized modes are studied, and we find that they do not exist when nonlocal interactions predominate with respect to local ones.

Stable bright solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Two-dimensional fundamental soliton-soliton pairs are investigated in binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions between atoms of the same type. Both attractive and repulsive interactions between atoms of different types are considered. The general properties of the stationary states are investigated variationally and numerically. The stability regions of the soliton-soliton pairs are determined.

Dynamics of imbalanced quasi-one-dimensional binary Bose-Einstein condensate in external potentials

K. K. Ismailov, Bakhtiyor B. Baizakov, F. Kh. Abdullaev +1 more

In the framework of coupled 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we explore the dynamics of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate where the intra-component interaction is repulsive, while the inter-component one is attractive. The existence regimes of stable self-trapped localized states in the form of symbiotic solitons have been analyzed. Imbalanced mixtures, where the number of atoms in one component exceeds the number of atoms in the other component, are considered in parabolic potential and box-like trap. When all the intra-species and inter-species interactions are repulsive, we numerically find a new type of symbiotic solitons resembling dark-bright solitons. A variational approach has been developed which allows us to find the stationary state of the system and frequency of small amplitude dynamics near the equilibrium. It is shown that the strength of inter-component coupling can be retrieved from the frequency of the localized state's vibrations.

Delocalizing transition of multidimensional solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

Bakhtiyor B. Baizakov, Mario Salerno

Critical behavior of solitonic wave forms of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices (OL's) has been studied in the framework of the continuous mean-field equation. In two and three-dimensions OL's bright matter-wave solitons undergo abrupt delocalization as the strength of the OL is decreased below some critical value. A similar delocalizing transition happens when the coefficient of nonlinearity crosses the critical value. As opposed, bright solitons in one-dimensional OL's retain their integrity over the whole range of parameter variations. An interpretation of this phenomenon in terms of quantum bound states in the effective potential is proposed.
