Abstract

Two-component Bose–Einstein condensates are considered within a number conserving version of the Bogoliubov theory. We show that the Bogoliubov vacuum state can be obtained in the particle representation in a simple form. We predict considerable density fluctuations in finite systems close to the phase-separation regime. We analyze homogeneous condensates and condensates in a double-well potential.

N-particle Bogoliubov vacuum state

J. Dziarmaga, Krzysztof Sacha

We consider the Bogoliubov vacuum state in the number-conserving Bogoliubov theory proposed by Castin and Dum [Phys. Rev. A 57 , 3008 (1998)]. We show that, in the particle representation, the vacuum can be written in a simple diagonal form. The vacuum state can describe the stationary N -particle ground state of a condensate in a trap, but it can also represent a dynamical state when, for example, a Bose-Einstein condensate initially prepared in the stationary ground state is subject to a time-dependent perturbation. In both cases the diagonal form of the Bogoliubov vacuum can be obtained by basically diagonalizing the reduced single-particle density matrix of the vacuum. We compare N -body states obtained within the Bogoliubov theory with the exact ground states in a 3-site Bose-Hubbard model. In this example, the Bogoliubov theory fails to accurately describe the stationary ground state in the limit when N → ∞ but a small fraction of depleted particles is kept constant.

Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well potential in the vicinity of a critical point

Barbara Oleś, Paweł Zin, Jan Chwedeńczuk +2 more

We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate with an attractive particle interaction in a symmetric double well potential. It is known that in the mean field description a symmetric solution for the condensate wavefunction becomes unstable when the interactions are stronger than some critical value. We analyze the system around the critical point applying the number conserving Bogoliubov theory and exact diagonalization of the two mode hamiltonian. It allows for estimation of the density fluctuations in the system. Fluctuations of the order parameter, which is defined in the mean field description, turn out to be maximal at the critical point.

Microcanonical fluctuations of the condensate in weakly interacting Bose gases

Zbigniew Idziaszek

We study fluctuations of the number of Bose condensed atoms in a weakly interacting homogeneous and trapped gases. For a homogeneous system we apply the particle-number-conserving formulation of the Bogoliubov theory and calculate the condensate fluctuations within the canonical and the microcanonical ensembles. We demonstrate that, at least in the low-temperature regime, predictions of the particle-number-conserving and traditional, nonconserving theory are identical, and lead to the anomalous scaling of fluctuations. Furthermore, the microcanonical fluctuations differ from the canonical ones by a quantity which scales normally in the number of particles, thus predictions of both ensembles are equivalent in the thermodynamic limit. We observe a similar behavior for a weakly interacting gas in a harmonic trap. This is in contrast to the trapped, ideal gas, where microcanonical and canonical fluctuations are different in the thermodynamic limit.

Bogoliubov theory of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the particle representation

Jacek Dziarmaga, Krzysztof Sacha

In the number-conserving Bogoliubov theory of the Bose-Einstein condensate, the Bogoliubov transformation between quasiparticles and particles is nonlinear. We invert this nonlinear transformation and give a general expression for eigenstates of the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian in particle representation. The particle representation unveils the structure of a condensate multiparticle wave function. We give several examples to illustrate a general formalism.

Gapless Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation for Bose gases

Vyacheslav I. Yukalov, Hagen M. Kleinert

A dilute Bose system with Bose-Einstein condensate is considered. It is shown that the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation can be made both conserving as well as gapless. This is achieved by taking into account all physical normalization conditions, that is, the normalization condition for the condensed particles and that for the total number of particles. Two Lagrange multipliers, introduced for preserving these normalization conditions, make the consideration completely self-consistent.

Number-conserving approaches to n -component Bose-Einstein condensates

Peter Mason, S. A. Gardiner

We develop the number-conserving approach, which has previously been used in a single-component Bose-Einstein condensed dilute atomic gas, to describe consistent coupled condensate and noncondensate number dynamics, to an $n$-component condensate. The resulting system of equations is comprised, for each component, of a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation coupled to modified Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations. Lower order approximations yield general formulations for multicomponent Gross-Pitaevskii equations, and systems of multicomponent Gross-Pitaevskii equations coupled to multicomponent modified number-conserving Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations. The analysis is left general, such that, in the $n$-component condensate, there may or may not be mutually coherent components. An expansion in powers of the ratio of noncondensate-to-condensate particle numbers for each coherent set is used to derive the self-consistent, second-order, dynamical equations of motion. The advantage of the analysis developed in this article is in its applications to dynamical instabilities that appear when two (or more) components are in conflict and where a significant noncondensed fraction of atoms is expected to appear.
