Classifying vortices in S=3 Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract

Motivated by the recent realization of a $^{52}\mathrm{Cr}$ Bose-Einstein condensate, we consider the phase diagram of a general spin-three condensate as a function of its scattering lengths. We classify each phase according to its reciprocal spinor, using a method developed in a previous work. We show that such a classification can be naturally extended to describe the vortices for a spinor condensate by using the topological theory of defects. To illustrate, we systematically describe the types of vortex excitations for each phase of the spin-three condensate.

Explicit expressions for the topological defects of spinor Bose–Einstein condensates

H Mäkelä

In this paper we first derive a general method which enables one to create expressions for vortices and monopoles. By using this method we construct several order-parameters describing the vortices and monopoles of Bose–Einstein condensates with hyperfine spin F = 1 and F = 2. We concentrate on defects which are topologically stable in the absence of an external magnetic field. In particular we show that in a ferromagnetic condensate there can be a vortex which does produce any superfluid flow. We also point out that the order-parameter space of the cyclic phase of F = 2 condensate consists of two disconnected sets. Finally we examine the effect of an external magnetic field on the vortices of a ferromagnetic F = 1 condensate and discuss the experimental preparation of a vortex in this system.

Classifying Novel Phases of Spinor Atoms

Ryan Barnett, Ari M. Turner, Eugene Demler

We consider many-body states of bosonic spinor atoms which, at the mean-field level, can be characterized by a single-particle wave function for the Bose-Einstein condensation and Mott insulating states. We describe and apply a classification scheme that makes explicit the spin symmetries of such states and enables one to naturally analyze their collective modes and topological excitations. Quite generally, the method allows classification of a spin F system as a polyhedron with 2F vertices. We apply the method to the many-body states of bosons with spins two and three. For spin-two atoms we find the ferromagnetic state, a continuum of nematic states, and a state having the symmetry of the point group of the regular tetrahedron. For spin-three atoms we obtain similar ferromagnetic and nematic phases as well as states having symmetries of various types of polyhedra with six vertices.

Axisymmetric versus nonaxisymmetric vortices in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Takeshi Mizushima, K. Machida, Takafumi Kita

The structure and stability of various vortices in $F=1$ spinor Bose-Einstein condensates are investigated by solving the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation under rotation. We perform an extensive search for stable vortices, considering both axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric vortices and covering a wide range of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. The topological defect called the Mermin-Ho (Anderson-Toulouse) vortex is shown to be stable for the ferromagnetic case. The phase diagram is established in a plane of external rotation $\ensuremath{\Omega}$ versus total magnetization M by comparing the free energies of possible vortices. It is shown that there are qualitative differences between axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric vortices which are manifested in the $\ensuremath{\Omega}$ and M dependences.

Topological aspects in spinor Bose–Einstein condensates

Masahito Ueda

This article overviews topological excitations in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates of dilute atomic gases. Various types of line defects, point defects and skyrmions are discussed. A brief review of homotopy theory is presented for use in the classification of possible topological excitations in individual quantum phases. Some recent experiments are also reviewed.

Axisymmetric vortices in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates under rotation

Tomoya Isoshima, Kazushige Machida

The relative stability of various axisymmetric vortices in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate with $F=1$ is examined within extended Bogoliubov theory. This yields the phase diagram in the plane of external rotation frequency vs magnetization. We compare antiferromagnetic, nonmagnetic, and ferromagnetic cases. The excitation spectrum is evaluated under rotation to investigate the local stability of the possible vortices and the vortex nucleation frequency.

Topological classification of vortex-core structures of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

Shingo Kobayashi, Yuki Kawaguchi, Muneto Nitta +1 more

We classify vortex-core structures according to the topology of the order parameter space. We develop a method to characterize how the order parameter changes inside the vortex core. We apply it to spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates and show that the vortex-core structures are classified by winding numbers that are locally defined in the core region. We also show that a vortex-core structure with a nontrivial winding number can be stabilized under a negative quadratic Zeeman effect.
