Boson-Controlled Quantum Transport

Abstract

We study the interplay of collective dynamics and damping in the presence of correlations and bosonic fluctuations within the framework of a newly proposed model, which captures the principal transport mechanisms that apply to a variety of physical systems. We establish close connections to the transport of lattice and spin polarons, or the dynamics of a particle coupled to a bath. We analyze the model by exactly calculating the optical conductivity, Drude weight, spectral functions, ground state dispersion and particle-boson correlation functions for a 1D infinite system.

Quantum transport in an environment parametrized by dispersive bosons

Monodeep Chakraborty, Holger Fehske

We generalize the two-channel (Edwards) fermion-boson model describing quantum transport in a background medium to the more realistic case of dispersive bosons. Using the variational exact diagonalization technique, we numerically solve the extended model in a one-dimensional setting, for both downward and upward curved boson dispersion, and show that going away from the previous Einstein-boson assumption has profound consequences for the particle transport. Specifically, we analyze the ground-state and spectral properties and demonstrate the renormalization of the particle's coherent band, effective mass, photoemission spectra, and fermion-boson correlation functions due to the interplay of fluctuations and correlations in a dispersive environment.

Edwards polaron formation : From one to three dimensions

Monodeep Chakraborty, Narayan Mohanta, A. Taraphder +2 more

Employing a self-consistent (optimized) variational diagonalization scheme, we investigate the formation of polaronic quasiparticles in a spinless fermion-boson transport model that couples the movement of charge carriers to fluctuations and correlations of a background medium. The background is parameterized by bosonic degrees of freedom. The variational fermion-boson Hilbert space is constructed to achieve high accuracy in one to three spatial dimensions with modest computational requirements. To characterize the ground-state properties of the Edwards model in the single-particle sector, we present exact numerical results for the polaron band dispersion, quasiparticle weight, Drude weight, mass enhancement, and the particle-boson correlations in a wide parameter regime. In the Edwards model, transport will be quasifree, diffusive or boson-assisted in the weakly fermion-boson coupled, fluctuation-dominated or strongly correlated regimes, respectively. Thereby correlated transport is not only assisted but also limited by the bosonic excitations. As a result, the Drude weight remains finite even in the limit of very small boson frequencies. For a strongly correlated background, closed loops are important, in any dimension, to generate a finite effective particle mass even when the free fermion has an infinite mass.

One-dimensional quantum transport affected by a background medium: Fluctuations versus correlations

Satoshi Ejima, Holger Fehske

We analyze the spectral properties of a very general two-channel fermion-boson transport model in the insulating and metallic regimes and the signatures of the metal-insulator quantum phase transition in between. To this end we determine the single-particle spectral function related to angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the momentum distribution function, the Drude weight, and the optical response by means of a dynamical (pseudosite) density-matrix renormalization group technique for the one-dimensional half-filled band case. We show how the interplay of correlations and fluctuations in the background medium controls the charge dynamics of the system, which is a fundamental problem in a great variety of advanced materials.

Dynamics of strongly coupled disordered dissipative spin-boson systems

Eliana Fiorelli, Pietro Rotondo, Federico Carollo +2 more

This paper presents a non-perturbative method to study dissipative spin-boson systems and, thus, allows access to the strong-coupling regime. Following the integration of the bosonic degrees of freedom, the spin dynamics can be described in terms of a classical stochastic process which, for some choices of the parameters, approximates the thermal dynamics of a fully-connected system
