Abstract

Employing a self-consistent (optimized) variational diagonalization scheme, we investigate the formation of polaronic quasiparticles in a spinless fermion-boson transport model that couples the movement of charge carriers to fluctuations and correlations of a background medium. The background is parameterized by bosonic degrees of freedom. The variational fermion-boson Hilbert space is constructed to achieve high accuracy in one to three spatial dimensions with modest computational requirements. To characterize the ground-state properties of the Edwards model in the single-particle sector, we present exact numerical results for the polaron band dispersion, quasiparticle weight, Drude weight, mass enhancement, and the particle-boson correlations in a wide parameter regime. In the Edwards model, transport will be quasifree, diffusive or boson-assisted in the weakly fermion-boson coupled, fluctuation-dominated or strongly correlated regimes, respectively. Thereby correlated transport is not only assisted but also limited by the bosonic excitations. As a result, the Drude weight remains finite even in the limit of very small boson frequencies. For a strongly correlated background, closed loops are important, in any dimension, to generate a finite effective particle mass even when the free fermion has an infinite mass.

Momentum average approximation for models with boson-modulated hopping: Role of closed loops in the dynamical generation of a finite quasiparticle mass

Mona Berciu, Holger Fehske

We generalize the momentum average approximation to study the properties of single polarons in models with boson affected hopping, where the fermion-boson scattering depends explicitly on both the fermion's and the boson's momentum. As a specific example, we investigate the Edwards fermion-boson model in both one and two dimensions. In one dimension, this allows us to compare our results with exact diagonalization results, to validate the accuracy of our approximation. The generalization to two-dimensional lattices allows us to calculate the polaron's quasiparticle weight and dispersion throughout the Brillouin zone and to demonstrate the importance of Trugman loops in generating a finite effective mass even when the free fermion has an infinite mass.

Quantum transport in an environment parametrized by dispersive bosons

Monodeep Chakraborty, Holger Fehske

We generalize the two-channel (Edwards) fermion-boson model describing quantum transport in a background medium to the more realistic case of dispersive bosons. Using the variational exact diagonalization technique, we numerically solve the extended model in a one-dimensional setting, for both downward and upward curved boson dispersion, and show that going away from the previous Einstein-boson assumption has profound consequences for the particle transport. Specifically, we analyze the ground-state and spectral properties and demonstrate the renormalization of the particle's coherent band, effective mass, photoemission spectra, and fermion-boson correlation functions due to the interplay of fluctuations and correlations in a dispersive environment.

Polaron properties at finite carrier concentration beyond one dimension

O.-Y. Tong

The Momentum Average (MA) approximation is a variational approximation that has been applied to analytically calculate the spectral function of single polarons and bipolarons, and was found to quantitatively match numerical results apart from the strongly adiabatic limit. The MA approximation was recently extended to a low carrier concentration of spinless fermions in 1D by making the additional assumption that the N-fermion ground-state is approximated well by the mean-field ground-state. This allowed the spectral function to be calculated analytically outside the Migdal limit. Good agreement was found with Density Matrix Renormalization Group simulations for fermion concentrations up to 0.15. In this thesis, the same approximation is extended to calculate the spectral function of a Holstein polaron for low carrier concentrations of spinless fermions on square and cubic lattices. Polaron effective mass and quasiparticle weight were found to depend strongly on the concentration x, especially in 3D. The 2D mass renormalizations were found to give a close match (< 5% error) to Bold Diagrammatic Monte Carlo (BDMC) results from the literature at all x < 0.2 when coupling is weak. However, there were significant quantitative differences between MA and BDMC results at large coupling. A possible explanation for this discrepancy is the presence of a soft excitation close to the polaron ground state. In addition, an efficient numerical scheme to calculate the real-space free electron propagator for a noninteracting Fermi sea is presented, which is used to calculate the self-energy for the 3D Green’s function at finite concentrations.

Polarons and slow quantum phonons

Andreas Alvermann, Holger Fehske, S. A. Trugman

We describe the formation and properties of Holstein polarons in the entire parameter regime. Our presentation focuses on the polaron mass and radius, which we obtain with an improved numerical technique. It is based on the combination of variational exact diagonalization with an improved construction of phonon states, providing results even for the strong coupling adiabatic regime. In particular we can describe the formation of large and heavy adiabatic polarons. A comparison of the polaron mass for the one- and three-dimensional situation explains how the different properties in the static oscillator limit determine the behavior in the adiabatic regime. The transport properties of large and small polarons are characterized by the $f$-sum rule and the optical conductivity. Our calculations are approximation free and have negligible numerical error. This allows us to give a conclusive and impartial description of polaron formation. We finally discuss the implications of our results for situations beyond the Holstein model.

Variational studies of dressed quasiparticles' properties and their interactions with external potentials

Ebrahimnejad Rahbari

In this thesis, we investigated the spectral properties of polaronic quasiparticles resulting from the coupling of a charge carrier to the bosonic excitations of ordered environments. Holstein polarons, describing an electron locally coupled to dispersionless phonons, and spin polarons in hole-doped antiferromagnets are considered. The Green's function of the Holstein polaron in a lattice with various kinds of impurities is calculated using the momentum average approximation. The main finding is that the scenario where the mere effect of the coupling to phonons is to enhance the electron's effective mass is incomplete as the phonons are found to also renormalize the impurity potential the polaron interacts with. This formalism is applied first to the case of a single impurity and the range of parameters where the polaron's ground state is localized is identified. The lifetime of the polaron due to scattering from weak but extended disorder is then studied and it is shown that the renormalization of the disorder potential leads to deviation of the strong coupling results from Fermi's golden rule's predictions. Motivated by the hole-doped cuprate superconductors, the motion of a hole in a two-dimensional Ising antiferromagnet and its binding to an attractive impurity is studied next, based on a variational scheme that allows for configurations with a certain maximum number of spin flips. The role of the magnetic sublattices in determining the symmetry of the resulting bound states is discussed. Next, a more realistic model describing a hole in a CuO₂ layer which retains the O explicitly, is considered. By neglecting the fluctuations of the Cu spins and using a variational principle similar to that of the previous chapter, a semi-analytic solution for the Green's function of the hole in an infinite 2D lattice is constructed. The resulting quasiparticle dispersion shows the proper ground state and other features observed in experiments. The lack of importance of the background spin fluctuations is justified based on the hole's ability to move on the O sublattice without disturbing the Cu spins. Finally, the model is generalized to gauge the importance of other relevant O orbitals.
