Abstract

We study the magnetic susceptibility of one-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnets containing nonmagnetic impurities which cut the chain into finite segments. For the susceptibility of long anisotropic Heisenberg chain segments with open boundaries we derive a parameter-free result at low temperatures using field-theory methods and the Bethe ansatz. The analytical result is verified by comparing with quantum Monte Carlo calculations. We then show that the partitioning of the chain into finite segments can explain the Curie-like contribution observed in recent experiments on Sr2Cu(1-x)PdxO(3+delta). Possible additional paramagnetic impurities seem to play only a minor role.

Thermodynamics of impurities in the anisotropic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain

The thermodynamics of finite open antiferromagnetic XXZ chains is studied using field theory, Bethe ansatz and quantum Monte Carlo methods. For the susceptibility a parameter-free result as a function of the number of sites L and temperature T beyond the scaling limit is derived. The limiting cases ( J being the exchange constant), where the boundary correction shows a logarithmically suppressed Curie behaviour, and , where a crossover to the ground state behaviour takes place, are discussed in detail. On the basis of this analysis we present a simple formula for the averaged susceptibility of a spin-1/2 chain doped with non-magnetic impurities. We show that the effective Curie constant has a highly non-trivial temperature dependence and shows scaling in the low temperature limit. Finally, corrections due to intrachain and interchain couplings and implications for experiments on Sr 2 Cu 1− x Pd x O 3+δ and related compounds are discussed.

Impurity effects in antiferromagnetic quantum spin-1/2 chains

Sebastian Eggert

We calculate the effects of a single impurity in antiferromagnetic quantum spin-1/2 chains with the help of one-dimensional quantum field theory and renormalization group tech niques in the low temperature limit. We are able to present numerical evidence from ex act diagonalization, numerical Bethe ansatz, and quantum Monte Carlo methods, which support our findings. Special emphasis has been put on impurity effects on the local susceptibility in the chain, because of the experimental relevance of this quantity. We propose a muon spin resonance experiment on quasi one-dimensional spin compounds, which may show some of the impurity effects.

NMR response in quasi–one-dimensional spin-\chem{\frac{1}{2}} antiferromagnets

Jesko Sirker, Nicolas Laflorencie

Non-magnetic impurities break a quantum spin chain into finite segments and induce Friedel-like oscillations in the local susceptibility near the edges. The signature of these oscillations has been observed in Knight shift experiments on the high-temperature superconductor YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6.5 and on the spin chain compound Sr 2 CuO 3 . Here we analytically calculate NMR spectra, compare with the available experimental data for Sr 2 CuO 3 , and show that the interchain coupling is responsible for the complicated and so far unexplained lineshape. Our results are based on a parameter-free formula for the local susceptibility of a finite spin chain obtained by bosonization which is checked by comparing with quantum Monte Carlo and density matrix renormalization group calculations.

Boundary Susceptibility in the Spin- 1/2 Chain: Curie-Like Behavior without Magnetic Impurities

Satoshi Fujimoto, Sebastian Eggert

We investigate the low-temperature thermodynamics of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with open ends. On the basis of boundary conformal field theory arguments and numerical density matrix renormalization group calculations, it is established that in the isotropic case the impurity susceptibility exhibits a Curie-like divergent behavior as the temperature decreases, even in the absence of magnetic impurities. A similar singular temperature dependence is also found in the boundary contributions of the specific heat coefficient. In the anisotropic case, for 1/2<Delta<1, these boundary quantities still show a singular temperature dependence obeying a power law with an anomalous dimension. Experimental consequences will be discussed.

Impurities in S=1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnetic Chains: Consequences for Neutron Scattering and Knight Shift

Sebastian Eggert, Ian K. Affleck

Nonmagnetic impurities in an $S\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain are studied using boundary conformal field theory techniques and finite-temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We calculate the static structure function, ${S}_{\mathrm{imp}}(k)$, measured in neutron scattering and the local susceptibility, ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{i}$ measured in Knight shift experiments. ${S}_{\mathrm{imp}}(k)$ becomes quite large near the antiferromagnetic wave vector, and exhibits much stronger temperature dependence than the bulk structure function. ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{i}$ has a large component which alternates and increases as a function of distance from the impurity.

Susceptibility of the 2D Spin- 12 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet with an Impurity

Kaj H. Höglund, Anders W. Sandvik

We use a quantum Monte Carlo method (stochastic series expansion) to study the effects of a magnetic or nonmagnetic impurity on the magnetic susceptibility of the two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet. At low temperatures, we find a log-divergent contribution to the transverse susceptibility. We also introduce an effective few-spin model that can quantitatively capture the differences between magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities at high and intermediate temperatures.
