Abstract

We use a quantum Monte Carlo method (stochastic series expansion) to study the effects of a magnetic or nonmagnetic impurity on the magnetic susceptibility of the two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet. At low temperatures, we find a log-divergent contribution to the transverse susceptibility. We also introduce an effective few-spin model that can quantitatively capture the differences between magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities at high and intermediate temperatures.

Quantum Monte Carlo simulation of tow-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model

Jinbin Li

The Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Model with spin 1/2 on a square lattice was simulated by using the Stochastic Series Expansion(SSE) Quantum Monte Carlo Method. The temperature dependence of the internal energy, specific heat and uniform susceptibility was observed. The results showed that specific heat has a maximum at kT/J=0.6 and uniform susceptibility saturates at kT/J=1 for the isotropy case. And the size of lattice also affects the temperature dependence of these thermodynamic quantities. For the anisotropy case, energy decreases with anisotropic parameter g increasing.Susceptibility changes slowly with temperature for g1 and exponentially decay for g1 in the low temperature region and its behaviors approach consistent for different g in the high temperature region.

Frustrated two-level impurities in two-dimensional antiferromagnets

A. V. Syromyatnikov, S. V. Maleyev

Dynamical properties of the impurity spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ in two-dimensional (2D) and quasi-2D Heisenberg antiferromagnets (AFs) at $T\ensuremath{\geqslant}0$ are discussed. The specific case of an impurity coupled symmetrically to two neighboring host spins is considered. The specific feature of this problem is that the defect is degenerate (frustrated) being located in zero molecular field. It is shown that this problem can be described by the spin-boson model without a tunneling term and with a more complex interaction. We demonstrate that the effect of the host system on the defect is completely described by the spectral function. It is found within the spin-wave approximation that for not too small $\ensuremath{\omega}$ the spectral function is proportional to ${\ensuremath{\omega}}^{2}∕{J}^{3}$, where $J$ is the exchange constant between the host spins. The defect dynamical susceptibility is derived using Abrikosov's pseudofermion technique and diagrammatic expansion. The calculations are performed within the fourth order of the dimensionless coupling parameter $f$. It is found that transverse impurity susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}(\ensuremath{\omega})$ has a Lorenz peak, with the width proportional to ${f}^{4}J{(T∕J)}^{3}$ which disappears at $T=0$, and a nonresonant term. The latter term diverges logarithmically as $\ensuremath{\omega},\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$. The static susceptibility $\ensuremath{\chi}(0)$ has the free-spin-like contribution $1∕(4T)$, and a logarithmic correction proportional to ${f}^{2}\mathrm{ln}(J∕T)$. The influence of finite concentration of the defects $n$ on the low-temperature properties of AFs is also investigated. A logarithmic correction to spin-wave velocity of the form $n{f}^{4}\mathrm{ln}\ensuremath{\mid}J∕\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\mid}$ and an anomalous damping of spin waves proportional to $n{f}^{4}\ensuremath{\mid}\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\mid}$ are obtained. The results of the present paper can be applied to other systems with a frustrated impurity in which the spectral function is proportional to ${\ensuremath{\omega}}^{2}$.

Nonmagnetic impurities in spin-gapped and gapless Heisenberg antiferromagnets

Anders W. Sandvik, Elbio R. Dagotto, Douglas J. Scalapino

We discuss the effects of nonmagnetic impurities (static holes) in the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on a two-dimensional (2D) square lattice, and on two- and three-leg ladders. Results of quantum Monte Carlo simulations show that a free localized moment is induced around an isolated impurity only in the spin-gapped two-leg ladder, in agreement with previous theoretical expectations. The localization length of the $S=1/2$ impurity moment in a two-leg ladder with isotropic couplings is $\ensuremath{\approx}1.5$ lattice spacings. In gapless ladders (odd number of legs) and in the 2D lattice, no free moments are induced. However, in the 2D system, which has antiferromagnetic long-range order at $T=0$ and a gap for longitudinal fluctuations, the impurity leads to a localized distortion of the magnetization in the direction of the broken symmetry, with total ${S}^{z}=1/2.$ The shape of the distortion is in close agreement with previous spin-wave calculations. For all the systems, a staggered moment is induced by the impurity. For the gapped two-leg ladder this is exponentially localized within a length equal to the spin correlation length of the ladder ($\ensuremath{\approx}3.2$ lattice spacings). For the three-leg ladder, the integrated staggered moment diverges as the system size goes to infinity, but the staggered magnetization at a given site appears to vanish. In 2D, we discuss the behavior seen in finite systems both with and without additional symmetry-breaking mechanisms. We also discuss the effect of impurities on the NMR Knight shift and the bulk magnetic susceptibility.

Edge and impurity response in two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets

Max A. Metlitski, Subir Sachdev A

Motivated by recent Monte Carlo simulations of H\"oglund and Sandvik (arXiv:0808.0408), we study edge response in square lattice quantum antiferromagnets. We use the O(3) nonlinear $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ model to compute the decay asymptotics of the staggered magnetization, energy density, and local magnetic susceptibility away from the edge. We find that the total edge susceptibility is negative and diverges logarithmically as the temperature $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$. We confirm the predictions of the continuum theory by performing a $1/S$ expansion of the microscopic Heisenberg model with the edge. We propose a qualitative explanation of the edge dimerization seen in Monte Carlo simulations by a theory of valence-bond-solid correlations in the N\'eel state. We also discuss the extension of the latter theory to the response of a single nonmagnetic impurity, and its connection to the theory of the deconfined critical point.

Thermodynamics of an Impurity Coupled to a Heisenberg Chain: Density-Matrix Renormalization Group and Monte Carlo Studies

Weijie Zhang, Jun-ichi Igarashi, Peter Fulde

By extending White's density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique to finite temperatures, we calculate the impurity susceptibility for the following systems: (a) a spin-1/2 impurity coupled to a single site of an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain and (b) an impurity coupled symmetrically to the two spins at the open ends of the chain. We also perform a Monte Carlo simulation and show that the DMRG adaptation gives reliable results. The calculated impurity susceptibility shows Pauli-like behavior at low temperatures in the former case while a ln T divergence is found in the latter case, in agreement with predictions based on conformal field theory.

Magnetic impurity coupled to a quantum spin chain: A quantum Monte Carlo study

W. Zhang, J. Igarashi, Peter Fulde

We study by Monte Carlo simulations a magnetic impurity coupled antiferromagnetically to a one-dimensional quantum spin model. The impurity susceptibility and the spin-correlation function are calculated. By defining and evaluating an energy scale from the inverse of the impurity susceptibility at zero temperature, we find a scaling relation for the impurity susceptibility in agreement with the prediction of the conformal field theory. We analyze the problem by mapping the spin model onto the resonant-level model, and interpret the energy scale as the resonant-level width. The spin-correlation function between the impurity spin and the spins in the chain is found to extend over long range at low temperatures. We show that the system can be considered as a model of an insulator with heavy-fermion behavior.
