Abstract

We present a numerical study of the magnetization process of frustrated quantum spin-$S$ chains with $S=1,3∕2,2$ as well as the classical limit. Using the exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization techniques, we provide evidence that a plateau at one third of the saturation magnetization exists in the magnetization curve of frustrated spin-$S$ chains with $S>1∕2$. Similar to the case of $S=1∕2$, this plateau state breaks the translational symmetry of the Hamiltonian and realizes an up-up-down pattern in the spin component parallel to the external field. Our study further shows that this plateau exists both in the cases of an isotropic exchange and in the easy-axis regime for spin-$S=1$, $3∕2$, and 2, but is absent in classical frustrated spin chains with isotropic interactions. We discuss the magnetic phase diagram of frustrated spin-1 and spin-$3∕2$ chains as well as other emergent features of the magnetization process such as kink singularities, jumps, and even-odd effects. A quantitative comparison of the one-third plateau in the easy-axis regime between spin-1 and spin-$3∕2$ chains on the one hand and the classical frustrated chain on the other hand indicates that the critical frustration and the phase boundaries of this state rapidly approach the classical result as the spin $S$ increases.

Quantum vs Classical Magnetization Plateaus of S=1/2 Frustrated Heisenberg Chains

Kazuo Hida, Ian K. Affleck

The competition between quantum and classical magnetization plateaus of S=1/2 frustrated Heisenberg chains with modified exchange couplings is investigated. The conventional S=1/2 frustrated Heisenberg chains is known to exhibit a 3-fold degenerate udu-type classical plateau at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization accompanied by the spontaneous Z_3 translational symmetry breakdown. The stability of this plateau phase against period 3 exchange modulation which favors the 00u-type quantum plateau state (00= singlet dimer) is studied by bosonization, renormalization group and numerical diagonalization methods. The ground state phase diagram and the spin configuration in each phase are numerically determined. The translationally invariant Valence Bond Solid-type model with 4-spin and third neighbor interactions, which has the exact 00u-type quantum plateau state, is also presented. The phase transition to the classical udu-type ground state is also observed by varying the strength of 4-spin and third neighbor interactions. The relation between these two types of models with quantum plateau states is discussed.

Translational symmetry broken magnetization plateau of the S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with competing anisotropies

Tôru Sakai, Kiyomi Okamoto, Kouichi Okunishi +4 more

We investigate the $S=1$ antiferromagnetic quantum spin chain with the exchange and single-ion anisotropies in a magnetic field, using numerical exact diagonalization of finite-size clusters, level spectroscopy analysis, and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). We find that a translational symmetry broken magnetization plateau possibly appears at the half of the saturation magnetization, when the anisotropies compete with each other. The level spectroscopy analysis gives the phase diagram at half the saturation magnetization. The DMRG calculation presents the magnetization curves for some typical parameters and clarifies the spin structure in the plateau phase.

One-Third Magnetization Plateau in an Anisotropic (S,S')=(1,2) Spin-Alternating Chain

Takashi Tonegawa, Tôru Sakai, Kiyomi Okamoto +1 more

Employing numerical methods, we study the ground-state magnetization curve of a ( S , S ')=(1,2) spin-alternating chain with uniaxial single-ion anisotropies, where S =1 and S '=2 spins are alternating and coupled antiferromagnetically. Special attention is paid to the magnetization plateau, the one-third plateau, which appears at one third of the saturation magnetization in the ground-state magnetization curve. We find that three kinds of one-third plateaux appear, one of which has a quantum nature, while the remaining two have a classical (Ising) nature. We determine the one-third plateau phase diagram on the D 2 versus D 1 plane, where D 1 ( D 2 ) is the ratio of the single-ion anisotropy constant for the S =1 ( S '=2) spin to the exchange interaction constant. This phase diagram consists of a phase boundary line between the quantum and classical one-third plateau states as well as three phase boundary lines between the one-third plateau and plateauless states. We emphasize that there is no phase transition between two classical one-third plateau states and both states are regarded as a single phase. Furthermore, the region of the one-third plateauless phase is divided into two parts, that is, the region in which the one-third magnetization state is not realized at any magnetic field as the ground state, and the region in which it is realized but no one-third plateau appears in the ground-state magnetization curve.

Magnetization plateaus in frustrated antiferromagnetic quantum spin models

A. Honecker, J. Schulenburg, Johannes Richter

Plateaus can be observed in the zero-temperature magnetization curve of quantum spin systems at rational values of the magnetization. In one dimension, the appearance of a plateau is controlled by a quantization condition for the magnetization which involves the length of the local spin and the volume of a translational unit cell of the ground state. We discuss examples of geometrically frustrated quantum spin systems with large (in general unbounded) periodicities of spontaneous breaking of translational symmetry in the ground state. In two dimensions, we discuss the square, triangular and Kagomé lattices using exact diagonalization (ED) for up to N = 40 sites. For the spin-1/2 XXZ model on the triangular lattice we study the nature and stability region of a plateau at one third of the saturation magnetization. The Kagomé lattice gives rise to particularly rich behaviour with several plateaus in the magnetization curve and a jump due to local magnon excitations just below saturation.

Magnetization Process of anS=1 Frustrated Spin Ladder

Kiyomi Okamoto, Kouichi Okunishi, Tôru Sakai

We investigate, at T =0, the magnetization process of the S =1 frustrated two-leg spin ladder having the leg interaction ( J ), the rung interaction ( J 0 ) and the diagonal interaction ( J d ), especially focusing on the appearance and the disappearance of the magnetization plateaux. We use the degenerate perturbation theory, the level spectroscopy analysis of the numerical diagonalization data and the DMRG. When J d =0, the M s /2 plateau ( M s is the saturation magnetization) appears for J 0 / J > 1.463. Then there is no M s /2 plateau for the so-called isotropic case J = J 0 . In case of J d > 0, J d helps the M s /2 plateau. And also, the M s /4 and (3/4) M s plateaux appear when J d is sufficiently large. These two plateaux are associated with the spontaneous breaking of the translation symmetry along the leg direction. We show the plateau phase diagram on the J d versus J plane, and also the magnetic phase diagram on the H versus J d plane for fixed J .
