Abstract

Based on a generalized one-band Hubbard model, we study magnetic properties of Mott insulating states for ultracold spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ fermionic atoms in optical lattices. When the $s$-wave scattering lengths for the total spin $S=2,0$ satisfy conditions ${a}_{2}>{a}_{0}>0$, we apply a functional integral approach to the half filled case, where the spin-quadrupole fluctuations dominate. On a two-dimensional square lattice, the saddle-point solution yields a staggered spin-quadrupole ordering at zero temperature with symmetry breaking from SO(5) to SO(4). Both spin and spin-quadrupole static structure factors are calculated, displaying highly anisotropic spin antiferromagnetic fluctuations and antiferroquadrupole long-range correlations, respectively. When Gaussian fluctuations around the saddle point are taken into account, spin-quadrupole density waves with a linear dispersion are derived. Compared with the spin-density waves in the half filled spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Hubbard model, the quadrupole density wave velocity is saturated in the strong-coupling limit, and there are no transverse spin-quadrupole mode couplings, as required by the SO(4) invariance of the effective action. Finally, in the strong-coupling limit of the model Hamiltonian, we derive the effective hyperfine spin-exchange interactions for the Mott insulating phases in the quarter filled and half filled cases, respectively.

Mott insulating phases and quantum phase transitions of interacting spin- 32 fermionic cold atoms in optical lattices at half filling

Hong-Hao Tu, Guang-Ming Zhang, Lu Yu

We study various Mott insulating phases of interacting spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ fermionic ultracold atoms in two-dimensional square optical lattices at half filling. Using a generalized one-band Hubbard model with hidden SO(5) symmetry, we identify two distinct symmetry breaking phases: the degenerate antiferromagnetic spin-dipole--spin-octupole ordering and spin-quadrupole ordering, depending on the sign of the spin-dependent interaction. These two competing orders exhibit very different symmetry properties, low energy excitations, and topological characterizations. Near the SU(4) symmetric point, a quantum critical state with a $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux phase may emerge due to strong quantum fluctuations, leading to spin algebraic correlations and gapless excitations.

Mott insulating states and their quantum phase transitions of interacting spin-3/2 ultracold fermionic atoms on optical lattices

GuangMing ZHANG, Hong-Hao Tu

We first introduce the ultracold atoms and the optical lattices. Then, we analyze various Mott insulating phases of interacting spin-3=2 fermionic ultracold atoms in two-dimensional square optical lattices. Using a generalized Hubbard model, we identify two distinct symmetry breaking phases: the spin-quadrupole ordering phase and the spin-dipole-spin-octupole ordering phase. Near the SU(4) symmetric point, we find that an algebraic spin liquid phase may emerge due to strong quantum fluctuations. Finally, the possible quantum phase transitions between these exotic phases are also discussed.

Mott Transition and Spin Structures of Spin-1 Bosons in Two-Dimensional Optical Lattice at Unit Filling

Yuta Toga, Hiroki Tsuchiura, Makoto Yamashita +2 more

We study the ground state properties of spin-1 bosons in a two-dimensional optical lattice, by applying a variational Monte Carlo method to the S=1 Bose-Hubbard model on a square lattice at unit filling. A doublon-holon binding factor introduced in the trial state provides a noticeable improvement in the variational energy over the conventional Gutzwiller wave function and allows us to deal effectively with the inter-site correlations of particle densities and spins. We systematically show how spin-dependent interactions modify the superfluid-Mott insulator transitions in the S=1 Bose-Hubbard model due to the interplay between the density and spin fluctuations of bosons. Furthermore, regarding the magnetic phases in the Mott region, the calculated spin structure factor elucidates the emergence of nematic and ferromagnetic spin orders for antiferromagnetic ($U_2>0$) and ferromagnetic ($U_2<0$) couplings, respectively.

Charge dynamics of the antiferromagnetically ordered Mott insulator

Xing-Jie Han, Yu Liu, Zhi-Yuan Liu +6 more

We introduce a slave-fermion formulation in which to study the charge dynamics of the half-filled Hubbard model on the square lattice. In this description, the charge degrees of freedom are represented by fermionic holons and doublons and the Mott-insulating characteristics of the ground state are the consequence of holon–doublon bound-state formation. The bosonic spin degrees of freedom are described by the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, yielding long-ranged (Néel) magnetic order at zero temperature. Within this framework and in the self-consistent Born approximation, we perform systematic calculations of the average double occupancy, the electronic density of states, the spectral function and the optical conductivity. Qualitatively, our method reproduces the lower and upper Hubbard bands, the spectral-weight transfer into a coherent quasiparticle band at their lower edges and the renormalisation of the Mott gap, which is associated with holon–doublon binding, due to the interactions of both quasiparticle species with the magnons. The zeros of the Green function at the chemical potential give the Luttinger volume, the poles of the self-energy reflect the underlying quasiparticle dispersion with a spin-renormalised hopping parameter and the optical gap is directly related to the Mott gap. Quantitatively, the square-lattice Hubbard model is one of the best-characterised problems in correlated condensed matter and many numerical calculations, all with different strengths and weaknesses, exist with which to benchmark our approach. From the semi-quantitative accuracy of our results for all but the weakest interaction strengths, we conclude that a self-consistent treatment of the spin-fluctuation effects on the charge degrees of freedom captures all the essential physics of the antiferromagnetic Mott–Hubbard insulator. We remark in addition that an analytical approximation with these properties serves a vital function in developing a full understanding of the fundamental physics of the Mott state, both in the antiferromagnetic insulator and at finite temperatures and dopings.

Spin-Orbital Exchange of Strongly Interacting Fermions in the p Band of a Two-Dimensional Optical Lattice

Zhenyu Zhou, Erhai Zhao, W. Vincent Liu

Mott insulators with both spin and orbital degeneracy are pertinent to a large number of transition metal oxides. The intertwined spin and orbital fluctuations can lead to rather exotic phases such as quantum spin-orbital liquids. Here, we consider two-component (spin 1/2) fermionic atoms with strong repulsive interactions on the p band of the optical square lattice. We derive the spin-orbital exchange for quarter filling of the p band when the density fluctuations are suppressed, and show that it frustrates the development of long-range spin order. Exact diagonalization indicates a spin-disordered ground state with ferro-orbital order. The system dynamically decouples into individual Heisenberg spin chains, each realizing a Luttinger liquid accessible at higher temperatures compared to atoms confined to the s band.

Exotic magnetic orders for high-spin ultracold fermions

E. Szirmai, Maciej Lewenstein

We study Hubbard models for ultracold bosonic or fermionic atoms loaded into an optical lattice. The atoms carry a high spin F> 1/2, and interact on site via strong repulsive Van der Waals forces. Making convenient rearrangements of the interaction terms, and exploiting their symmetry properties, we derive low-energy effective models with nearest-neighbor interactions, and their properties. We apply our method to F =3/2, and 5/2 fermions on two-dimensional square lattice at quarter, and 1/6 fillings, respectively, and investigate mean-field equations for repulsive couplings. We find for F =3/2 fermions that the plaquette state appearing in the highly symmetric SU (4) case does not require fine tuning, and is stable in an extended region of the phase diagram. This phase competes with an SU (2) flux state, that is always suppressed for repulsive interactions in the absence of external magnetic field. The SU (2) flux state has, however, lower energy than the plaquette phase, and stabilizes in the presence of weak applied magnetic field. For F =5/2 fermions a similar SU (2) plaquette phase is found to be the ground state without external magnetic field.
