Abstract

The real-space densities of a polarized strongly interacting two-component Fermi gas of 6Li atoms reveal two low-temperature regimes, both with a fully paired core. At the lowest temperatures, the unpolarized core deforms with increasing polarization. Sharp boundaries between the core and the excess unpaired atoms are consistent with a phase separation driven by a first-order phase transition. In contrast, at higher temperatures the core does not deform but remains unpolarized up to a critical polarization. The boundaries are not sharp in this case, indicating a partially polarized shell between the core and the unpaired atoms. The temperature dependence is consistent with a tricritical point in the phase diagram.

Phase separation between a uniformly paired core and excess unpaired atoms is observed in a two component strongly interacting ultra-cold gas of fermionic 6Li. Spatial deformations in the density distributions violate the local density approximation.

We have produced a two-component gas of ultracold, fermionic 6Li atoms with unequal spin populations. The real-space densities reveal a superfluid/normal phase separation at very low temperatures, and a partially polarized paired phase at higher temperatures.

POLARIZED ATOMIC FERMI GASES

We review recent experimental studies on polarized atomic Fermi gases. The particular focus is on our own experiments of strongly interacting two-component Fermi gases with imbalanced populations. The real-space density distributions reveal a superfluid/normal phase separation at very low temperatures, accompanied by deformation of evenly paired core; at higher temperatures, a partially polarized phase is observed.

Pairing and Phase Separation in a Polarized Fermi Gas

Guthrie B. Partridge, Wenhui Li, Ramsey I. Kamar +2 more

We report the observation of pairing in a gas of atomic fermions with unequal numbers of two components. Beyond a critical polarization, the gas separates into a phase that is consistent with a superfluid paired core surrounded by a shell of normal unpaired fermions. The critical polarization diminishes with decreasing attractive interaction. For near-zero polarization, we measured the parameter beta = -0.54 +/- 0.05, describing the universal energy of a strongly interacting paired Fermi gas, and found good agreement with recent theory. These results are relevant to predictions of exotic new phases of quark matter and of strongly magnetized superconductors.

Polarized Fermi Condensates with Unequal Masses: Tuning the Tricritical Point

Meera M. Parish, Francesca Maria Marchetti, Austen Lamacraft +1 more

We consider a two-component atomic Fermi gas within a mean-field, single-channel model, where both the mass and population of each component are unequal. We show that the tricritical point at zero temperature evolves smoothly from the BEC to BCS side of the resonance as a function of mass ratio r. We find that the interior gap state proposed by Liu and Wilczek is always unstable to phase separation, while the breached pair state with one Fermi surface for the excess fermions exhibits differences in its density of states and pair correlation functions depending on which side of the resonance it lies. Finally, we show that, when r greater, similar 3.95, the finite-temperature phase diagram of trapped gases at unitarity becomes topologically distinct from the equal mass system.
