Generalized exclusion statistics and degenerate signature of strongly interacting anyons

Abstract

We show that below the degenerate temperature the distribution profiles of strongly interacting anyons in one-dimension coincide with the most probable distributions of ideal particles obeying generalized exclusion statistics (GES). In the strongly interacting regime the thermodynamics and the local two-particle correlation function derived from the GES are seen to agree for low temperatures with the results derived for the anyon model using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. The anyonic and dynamical interactions implement a continuous range of GES, providing a signature of strongly interacting anyons, including the strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose gas.

Fermionization and fractional statistics in the strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose gas

Murray T. Batchelor, Xin Guan

We discuss recent results on the relation between the strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose gas and a gas of ideal particles obeying nonmutual generalized exclusion statistics (GES). The thermodynamic properties considered include the statistical profiles, the specific heat and local pair correlations. In the strong coupling limit γ → ∞, the Tonks-Girardeau gas, the equivalence is with Fermi statistics. The deviation from Fermi statistics during boson fermionization for finite but large interaction strength γ is described by the relation α ≈ 1 - 2/γ, where α is a measure of the GES. This gives a quantitative description of the fermionization process. In this sense the recent experimental measurement of local pair correlations in a 1D Bose gas of87Rb atoms also provides a measure of the deviation of the GES parameter α away from the pure Fermi statistics value α=1. Other thermodynamic properties, such as the distribution profiles and the specific heat, are also sensitive to the statistics. They also thus provide a way of exploring fractional statistics in the strongly interacting 1D Bose gas.

Observation of anyonic thermodynamics and generalized Pauli principle

Fansu Wei, Chi Zhang, Z Zhenyu Ye +4 more

Anyons are quasiparticles with quantum statistics interpolating between those of bosons and fermions. Two distinct manifestations of anyonic behaviour have been theoretically established: fractional exchange statistics where particle exchange can produce any phase, and generalized exclusion statistics which extends the Pauli exclusion principle. While anyons exhibiting fractional exchange statistics have been observed in diverse platforms, experimental realizations of generalized exclusion statistics and direct measurements of its thermodynamic signatures have remained elusive. Here, we realize an anyonic thermodynamic ensemble obeying generalized exclusion statistics and detect its anyonic thermodynamics in a one-dimensional strongly interacting quantum gas. To achieve this, we exploit the bijective mapping between dynamical and statistical interactions in one dimension. By tuning interaction strength and temperature over a wide range, we measure the equation of state and identify clear departures from Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics. These deviations are quantitatively captured by generalized exclusion statistics, providing direct evidence for the generalized Pauli principle. Independent probes of other thermodynamic quantities including pressure and the Tan contact further validate this framework. Our results establish a versatile platform for engineering anyonic exclusion statistics and open the door to thermodynamic applications of anyons in quantum technologies.

One-Dimensional Interacting Anyon Gas: Low-Energy Properties and Haldane Exclusion Statistics

Murray T. Batchelor, Xin Guan, N. Oelkers

The low-energy properties of the one-dimensional anyon gas with a delta-function interaction are discussed in the context of its Bethe ansatz solution. It is found that the anyonic statistical parameter and the dynamical coupling constant induce Haldane exclusion statistics interpolating between bosons and fermions. Moreover, the anyonic parameter may trigger statistics beyond Fermi statistics for which the exclusion parameter alpha is greater than one. The Tonks-Girardeau and the weak coupling limits are discussed in detail. The results support the universal role of alpha in the dispersion relations.

Thermodynamic Properties of Generalized Exclusion Statistics

Hyun Seok Yang, Bum-Hoon Lee, Chanyong Park B

We analytically calculate some thermodynamic quantities of an ideal $g$-on gas obeying generalized exclusion statistics. We show that the specific heat of a $g$-on gas ($g \neq 0$) vanishes linearly in any dimension as $T \to 0$ when the particle number is conserved and exhibits an interesting dual symmetry that relates the particle-statistics at $g$ to the hole-statistics at $1/g$ at low temperatures. We derive the complete solution for the cluster coefficients $b_l(g)$ as a function of Haldane's statistical interaction $g$ in $D$ dimensions. We also find that the cluster coefficients $b_l(g)$ and the virial coefficients $a_l(g)$ are exactly mirror symmetric ($l$=odd) or antisymmetric ($l$=even) about $g=1/2$. In two dimensions, we completely determine the closed forms about the cluster and the virial coefficients of the generalized exclusion statistics, which exactly agree with the virial coefficients of an anyon gas of linear energies. We show that the $g$-on gas with zero chemical potential shows thermodynamic properties similar to the photon statistics. We discuss some physical implications of our results.

Thermodynamics of dilute anyon gases from fusion constraints

Y. Nakajima, Umang Mehta, Hart Goldman

Abstract Recent measurements on 2 d materials tuning between fractional quantum anomalous Hall phases and a plethora of correlated electronic states call for a detailed understanding of the dynamics of anyons. Here we develop a general theory of the statistical mechanics of anyon gases at finite temperature, valid in regimes where the anyons are sufficiently dilute and can be treated as weakly interacting particles. We find that with a minimal set of universal braiding and fusion data, along with information about the hierarchy of anyon gaps, it is possible to construct a distribution function for any dilute anyon gas, as well as derive thermodynamic observables. Our results are built on an anyon exclusion principle manifesting as a constraint on fusion outcomes of physical states. Our approach unifies and streamlines a range of results for itinerant anyon models, from solvable lattice Hamiltonians to large- N field theories.

Statistically interacting quantum gases in D dimensions

Geoffrey G. Potter

Chapter 1. Exact and explicit results are derived for the thermodynamic properties (isochores, isotherms, isobars, response functions, speed of sound) of a quantum gas in dimensions [special characters omitted] ≥ 1 and with fractional exclusion statistics 0 ≤ g ≤ 1 connecting bosons (g = 0) and fermions (g = 1). In [special characters omitted] = 1 the results are equivalent to those of the Calogero-Sutherland model, a gas with long-range two-body interaction. Emphasis is given to the crossover between boson-like and fermion-like features, caused by aspects of the statistical interaction that mimic long-range attraction and short-range repulsion. A phase transition along the isobar occurs at a nonzero temperature in all dimensions. The T-dependence of the speed of sound is in simple relation to isochores and isobars. The effects of soft container walls are accounted for rigorously for the case of a pure power-law potential. Chapter 2. The exact thermodynamics (isochores, isotherms, isobars, response functions, speed of sound) is worked out for a statistically interacting quantum gas in [special characters omitted] dimensions. The results in [special characters omitted] = 1 are those of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz for the Nonlinear Schrödinger model, a gas with repulsive two-body contact potential. In all dimensions the ideal boson and fermion gases are recovered in the weak-coupling and strong-coupling limits, respectively. For all nonzero couplings ideal fermion gas behavior emerges for [special characters omitted] >> 1 and, in the limit [special characters omitted] → ∞, a phase transition occurs at T > 0. Significant deviations from ideal quantum gas behavior are found for intermediate coupling and finite [special characters omitted]. Chapter 3. Methodology previously developed in the framework of the coordinate Bethe ansatz applied to integrable quantum gas models is employed to calculate some ground-state properties and elementary excitations for quantum gas models in [special characters omitted] = 1 dimensions with statistical interactions that are not equivalent to dynamical interactions. The focus in this comparative study is on modifications of the Calogero-Sutherland and Nonlinear Schrödinger models. Statistical interactions cannot be chosen arbitrarily. They must satisfy certain physicality conditions, which will be discussed in some detail.
