The longitudinal spin structure factor for the XXZ-chain at small wave vector q is obtained using Bethe ansatz, field theory methods, and the density matrix renormalization group. It consists of a peak with a peculiar, non-Lorentzian shape and a high-frequency tail. We show that the width of the peak is proportional to q2 for finite magnetic field compared to q3 for a zero field. For the tail we derive an analytic formula without any adjustable parameters and demonstrate that the integrability of the model directly affects the line shape.

We combine Bethe ansatz and field theory methods to study the longitudinal dynamical structure factor S zz ( q ,ω) for the anisotropic spin-1/2 chain in the gapless regime. Using bosonization, we derive a low-energy effective model, including the leading irrelevant operators (band curvature terms) which account for boson decay processes. The coupling constants of the effective model for finite anisotropy and finite magnetic field are determined exactly by comparison with corrections to thermodynamic quantities calculated by Bethe ansatz. We show that a good approximation for the shape of the on-shell peak of S zz ( q ,ω) in the interacting case is obtained by rescaling the result for free fermions by certain coefficients extracted from the effective Hamiltonian. In particular, the width of the on-shell peak is argued to scale like δω q ∼ q 2 and this prediction is shown to agree with the width of the two-particle continuum at finite fields calculated from the Bethe ansatz equations. An exception to the q 2 scaling is found at finite field and large anisotropy parameter (near the isotropic point). We also present the calculation of the high-frequency tail of S zz ( q ,ω) in the region using finite-order perturbation theory in the band curvature terms. Both the width of the on-shell peak and the high-frequency tail are compared with S zz ( q ,ω) calculated by Bethe ansatz for finite chains using determinant expressions for the form factors and excellent agreement is obtained. Finally, the accuracy of the form factors is checked against the exact first moment sum rule and the static structure factor calculated by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG).
Spin-1/2 chains demonstrate some of the striking effects of interactions and quantum fluctuations in one-dimensional systems. The XXZ model has been used to study the unusual properties of anisotropic spin chains in an external magnetic field. The zero temperature phase diagram for this model exhibits a critical or quasi-long-range-ordered phase which is a realization of a Luttinger liquid. While many static properties of spin-1/2 chains have been explained by combinations of analytical techniques such as bosonization and Bethe ansatz, the standard approach fails in the calculation of some time-dependent correlation functions. I present a study of the longitudinal dynamical structure factor for the XXZ model in the critical regime. I show that an approximation for the line shape of the dynamical structure factor in the limit of small momentum transfer can be obtained by going beyond the Luttinger model and treating irrelevant operators associated with band curvature effects. This approach is able to describe the width of the on-shell peak and the high-frequency tail at finite magnetic field. Integrability is shown to affect the low-energy effective model at zero field, with consequences for the line shape. The power-law singularities at the thresholds of the particle-hole continuum are investigated using an analogy with the X-ray edge problem. Using methods of Bethe ansatz and conformal field theory, I compute the exact exponents for the edge singularities of the dynamical structure factor. The same methods are used to study the long-time asymptotic behavior of the spin self-correlation function, which is shown to be dominated by a high-energy excitation.
Dynamical correlation functions contain important physical information on correlated spin models. Here a dynamical theory suitable to the Δ=1 isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain in a longitudinal magnetic field is extended to anisotropy Δ>1. The aim of this paper is the study of the (k,ω)-plane line shape of the spin dynamical structure factor components S+−(k,ω), S−+(k,ω), and Szz(k,ω) of the Δ>1 spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising chain in a longitudinal magnetic field near their (k,ω)-plane sharp peaks. However, the extension of the theory to anisotropy Δ>1 requires as a first step the clarification of the nature of a specific type of elementary magnetic configurations in terms of physical spins 1/2. To reach that goal, that the spin SU(2) symmetry of the isotropic Δ=1 point is in the case of anisotropy Δ>1 replaced by a continuous quantum group deformed q-spin SUq(2) symmetry plays a key role. For Δ>1, spin projection Sz remains a good quantum number whereas spin S is not, being replaced by the q-spin Sq in the eigenvalue of the Casimir generator of the continuous SUq(2) symmetry. Based on the isomorphism between the irreducible representations of the Δ=1 spin SU(2) symmetry and Δ>1 continuous SUq(2) symmetry and on their relation to the occupancy configurations of the Bethe-ansatz quantum numbers one finds that the elementary magnetic configurations under study are q-spin neutral. This determines the form of S matrices on which the extended dynamical theory relies. They are found in this paper to describe the scattering of n-particles whose relation to configurations of physical spins 1/2 is established. Specifically, their internal degrees of freedom refer to unbound q-spin singlet pairs of physical spins 1/2 described by n=1 real single Bethe rapidities and to n=2,3,... bound such q-spin singlet pairs described by Bethe n-strings for n>1. There is a relationship between the negativity and the length of the momentum k interval of the k dependent exponents that control the power-law line shape of the spin dynamical structure factor components near the lower threshold of a given (k,ω)-plane continuum and the amount of spectral weight over the latter. Using such a relationship, one finds that in the thermodynamic limit the significant spectral weight contributions from Bethe n-strings at a finite longitudinal magnetic field refer to specific two-parametric (k,ω)-plane gapped continua in the spectra of the spin dynamical structure factor components S+−(k,ω) and Szz(k,ω). In contrast to the Δ=1 isotropic chain, excited energy eigenstates including up to n=3 Bethe n-strings lead to finite spectral-weight contributions to S+−(k,ω). Most spectral weight stems though from excited energy eigenstates whose q-spin singlet Sz=Sq=0 pairs of physical spins 1/2 are all unbound. It is associated with (k,ω)-plane continua in the spectra of the spin dynamical structure factor components that are gapless at some specific momentum values. We derive analytical expressions for the line shapes of S+−(k,ω), S−+(k,ω), and Szz(k,ω) valid in the vicinity of (k,ω)-plane lines of sharp peaks. Those are mostly located at and just above lower thresholds of (k,ω)-plane continua associated with both states with only unbound q-spin singlet pairs and states populated by such pairs and a single n=2 or n=3 n-particle. Our results provide physically interesting and important information on the microscopic processes that determine the dynamical properties of the non-perturbative spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising chain in a longitudinal magnetic field.
Recently there has been a renewed interest in the spectra and role in dynamical properties of excited states of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain in longitudinal magnetic fields associated with Bethe strings. The latter are bound states of elementary magnetic excitations described by Bethe-ansatz complex non-real rapidities. Previous studies on this problem referred to finite-size systems. Here we consider the thermodynamic limit and study it for the isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXX chain in a longitudinal magnetic field. We confirm that also in that limit the most significant spectral weight contribution from Bethe strings leads to (k,ω)-plane gapped continua in the spectra of the spin dynamical structure factors S+−(k,ω) and Sxx(k,ω)=Syy(k,ω). The contribution of Bethe strings to Szz(k,ω) is found to be small at low spin densities m and to become negligible upon increasing that density above m≈0.317. For S−+(k,ω), that contribution is found to be negligible at finite magnetic field. We derive analytical expressions for the line shapes of S+−(k,ω), Sxx(k,ω)=Syy(k,ω), and Szz(k,ω) valid in the (k,ω)-plane vicinity of singularities located at and just above the gapped lower thresholds of the Bethe-string states's spectra. As a side result and in order to provide an overall physical picture that includes the relative (k,ω)-plane location of all spectra with a significant amount of spectral weight, we revisit the general problem of the line-shape of the transverse and longitudinal spin dynamical structure factors at finite magnetic field and excitation energies in the (k,ω)-plane vicinity of other singularities. This includes those located at and just above the lower thresholds of the spectra that stem from excited states described by only real Bethe-ansatz rapidities.
Transition rates and dynamic spin structure factor at zero temperature for the spin-1/2 XXZ chain at critical regime in a magnetic field are numerically evaluated in terms of the exact determinant representations for the form factors and norms of the Bethe eigenstates. We have seen that the transition rates converges toward the constant function with the value 1 in the limit delta -> 0. The observed critical exponent of the singularity at the lower boundary is compared with the one predicted from the comformal field theory. We confirm that they are in good agreement. Further we have discovered that a small peak emerges near the upper boundary in the line shape of S(q,omega) for 0
Inelastic neutron scattering experiments are commonly used to unveil how excitations on Heisenberg spin models play a role in dynamical correlations functions. For a certain class of materials, like CsCoCl3 or CsCoBr3 salts, it turns out that their magnetic properties are fairly well approximated by quasi-one dimensional XXZ models, which enjoy the property of quantum integrability. In these instances, one can in principle use their underlying algebraic structure to describe very precisely how excitations, the so-called spinons, participate in dynamical correlations functions. Even though the available theories (either algebraic Bethe ansatz or quantum group approach) provide all the needed physical quantities such as form factors, complete set of eigenstates and spectrum, it is typically a rather daunting task, however, to obtain sufficiently simple analytical expressions for computing Dynamical Structure Factors (DSFs), valuable, e.g., for parameters estimation based on experimental data. This is particularly the case for the longitudinal DSF of the XXZ model, which has eluded a formal mathematical treatment thus far. Using the quantum group approach, we present here an exact and simple expression of the 2-spinon longitudinal DSF and show our results to be consistent with the expected sum rules and the isotropic and Ising antiferromagnet limiting cases.
