Abstract

Starting from the mean-field solution of a spin-orbital model of $\mathrm{Li}\mathrm{Ni}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$, we derive an effective quantum dimer model (QDM) that lives on the triangular lattice and contains kinetic terms acting on four-site plaquettes and six-site loops. Using exact diagonalizations and Green's function Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the competition between these kinetic terms leads to a resonating valence bond (RVB) state for a finite range of parameters. We also show that this RVB phase is connected to the RVB phase identified in the Rokhsar-Kivelson model on the same lattice in the context of a generalized model that contains both the six-site loops and a nearest-neighbor dimer repulsion. These results suggest that the occurrence of an RVB phase is a generic feature of QDM with competing interactions.

Columnar dimer and plaquette resonating valence bond states of the quantum dimer model

P. W. Leung, Chiu, K. C., Karl J. Runge

We study the nature of the ground state of the quantum dimer model proposed by Rokhsar and Kivelson by diagonalizing the Hamiltonian of the model on square lattices of size $L\times L$, where $L\leq 8$, with periodic boundary conditions. Finite-size scaling studies of the columnar order parameter and the low lying excitation spectrum show no evidence of a dimer liquid state in any finite region of the zero temperature phase diagram. In addition, we find evidence of a transition from the columnar dimer state to an intermediate state at a negative value of $V/J$. This state is identified to be the plaquette resonating valence bond (RVB) state. The energy gap of this state vanishes as a power law of $L$. It exhibits columnar dimer order, but has disorder {\it within} the dimer columns. This state persists up to $V/J<1$, and the system changes to a dimer liquid state only at $V/J=1$.

Properties of resonating-valence-bond spin liquids and critical dimer models

Ying Tang, Anders W. Sandvik, Christopher L. Henley

We use Monte Carlo simulations to study properties of Anderson's resonating-valence-bond (RVB) spin-liquid state on the square lattice (i.e., the equal superposition of all pairing of spins into nearest-neighbor singlet pairs) and compare with the classical dimer model (CDM). The latter system also corresponds to the ground state of the Rokhsar-Kivelson quantum dimer model at its critical point. We find that, although spin-spin correlations decay exponentially in the RVB, four-spin valence-bond-solid correlations are critical, qualitatively like the well-known dimer-dimer correlations of the CDM, but decaying more slowly (as $1/{r}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ with $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\approx}1.20$, compared with $\ensuremath{\alpha}=2$ for the CDM). We also compute the distribution of monomer (defect) pair separations, which decay by a larger exponent in the RVB than in the CDM. We further study both models in their different winding-number sectors and evaluate the relative weights of different sectors. Like the CDM, all the observed RVB behaviors can be understood in the framework of a mapping to a ``height'' model characterized by a gradient-squared stiffness constant $K$. Four independent measurements consistently show a value ${K}_{\mathrm{RVB}}\ensuremath{\approx}1.6{K}_{\mathrm{CDM}}$, with the same kinds of numerical evaluations of ${K}_{\mathrm{CDM}}$ giving results in agreement with the rigorously known value ${K}_{\mathrm{CDM}}=\ensuremath{\pi}/16$. The background of a nonzero winding-number gradient $W/L$ introduces spatial anisotropies and an increase in the effective $K$, both of which can be understood as a consequence of anharmonic terms in the height-model free energy, which are of relevance to the recently proposed scenario of ``Cantor deconfinement'' in extended quantum dimer models. In addition to the standard case of short bonds only, we also studied ensembles in which fourth-neighbor (bipartite) bonds are allowed at a density controlled by a tunable fugacity, resulting (as expected) in a smooth reduction of $K$.

Competing valence bond crystals in the kagome quantum dimer model

Didier Poilblanc, Grégoire Misguich

The singlet dynamics, which plays a major role in the physics of the spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet (QHAF) on the kagome lattice, can be approximately described by projecting onto the nearest-neighbor valence bond (NNVB) singlet subspace. We revisit here the effective quantum dimer model, which originates from the latter NNVB-projected Heisenberg model via a nonperturbative Rokhsar-Kivelson-like scheme. By using Lanczos exact diagonalization on a 108-site cluster supplemented by a careful symmetry analysis, it is shown that a previously found 36-site valence bond crystal (VBC) in fact competes with a new type of 12-site ``resonating-columnar'' VBC. Interestingly, these two VBCs ``emerge'' in different topological sectors. The exceptionally large degeneracy of the ground-state multiplets (144 on our 108-site cluster) and the proximity of a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ dimer liquid have implications for the interpretation of numerical results on the QHAF, which are outlined. The possibility of a chiral VBC (i.e., spontaneously breaking time-reversal symmetry) is also discussed.

Three-dimensional resonating-valence-bond liquids and their excitations

Roderich Moessner, Shivaji L. Sondhi

We show that there are two types of resonating-valence-bond (RVB) liquid phases present in three-dimensional quantum dimer models, corresponding to the deconfining phases of $U(1)$ and ${Z}_{2}$ gauge theories in $d=3+1.$ The former is found on the bipartite cubic lattice and is the generalization of the critical point in the square lattice quantum dimer model found originally by Rokhsar and Kivelson. The latter exists on the nonbipartite face-centered cubic lattice and generalizes the RVB phase found earlier by us on the triangular lattice. We discuss the excitation spectrum and the nature of the ordering in both cases. Both phases exhibit gapped spinons. In the $U(1)$ case we find a collective, linearly dispersing, transverse excitation, which is the photon of the low-energy Maxwell Lagrangian and we identify the ordering as quantum order in Wen's sense. In the ${Z}_{2}$ case all collective excitations are gapped and, as in $d=2,$ the low-energy description of this topologically ordered state is the purely topological BF action. As a byproduct of this analysis, we unearth a further gapless excitation, the pi0n, in the square lattice quantum dimer model at its critical point.

Plaquette phase of the square-lattice quantum dimer model: Quantum Monte Carlo calculations

Olav F. Syljuåsen

The plaquette phase of the square-lattice quantum dimer model is studied using a continuous-time reptation quantum Monte Carlo method for lattices of sizes up to $48\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}48$ sites. We determine the location of the phase transition between the columnar and plaquette phases to occur at ${V}_{c}∕J=0.60\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05$ which is significantly larger than inferred from previous exact diagonalization studies on smaller lattices. Off diagonal correlation functions are obtained. They exhibit long-range order in the plaquette phase but not at the Rokhsar-Kivelson point. We also observe significant finite-size corrections to scaling for the transition between the plaquette phase and the critical resonating valence bond liquid. This study demonstrates the importance of understanding finite-size effects when considering critical properties of the square-lattice quantum dimer model.

Critical colored-RVB states in the frustrated quantum Heisenberg model on the square lattice

Didier Poilblanc, Matthieu Mambrini, Sylvain Capponi

We consider a family of SU(2)-symmetric Projected Entangled Paired States (PEPS) on the square lattice, defining colored-Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) states, to describe the quantum disordered phase of the J_1-J_2 J 1 − J 2 frustrated Heisenberg model. For J_2/J_1\sim 0.55 J 2 / J 1 ∼ 0.55 we show the emergence of critical (algebraic) dimer-dimer correlations – typical of Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) points of quantum dimer models on bipartite lattices – while, simultaneously, the spin-spin correlation length remains short. Our findings are consistent with a spin liquid or a weak Valence Bond Crystal in the neighborhood of an RK point.
