Abstract

We theoretically explore the possibility of creating spin quantum entanglement in a system of two electrons confined respectively in two vertically coupled quantum dots in the presence of Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling. We find that the system can be described by a generalized Jaynes-Cummings model of two-mode bosons interacting with two spins. The lower excited states of this model are calculated to reveal the underlying physics of the far-infrared absorption spectra. The analytic perturbation approach shows that an effective transverse coupling of spins can be obtained by eliminating the orbital degrees of freedom in the large-detuning limit. Here, the orbital degrees of freedom of the two electrons, which are described by two-mode bosons, serve as a quantized data bus to exchange the quantum information between the two electron spins. Then a nontrivial two-qubit logic gate is realized and spin entanglement between the two electrons is created by virtue of spin-orbit interactions.

QUANTUM ENTANGLEMENT OF DOUBLE ELECTRONS IN TWO COUPLED QUANTUM DOTS

Haiyu Li

We study the system of vertically coupled two quantum dots in confined single electron. Coulomb interaction between two electrons and Rashba type spin-orbit coupling are taken into account. It is a two-Fermion system, hence the antisymmetric requirement of electronic states must be considered. Four lower antisymmetric eigenfunctions are found out. Based on the rotation wave approximation, the coherent manipulation of quantum state in an external electric pulse with some resonance harmonic frequencies are investigated. The instantaneous degree of quantum entanglement of the state in time-dependent external electronic field is calculated.

Spin-orbit coupling effects in two-electron coupled quantum dots

Fabio Baruffa

In the last years, the electron spin in quantum dots has become a most promising candidate for the realization of qubits, the basic element for quantum computation. In quantum dot spin qubits the exchange interaction implements a fundamental two qubit gate, which originates in the Coulomb interaction and the Pauli principle. Compared to single qubit gates, the exchange based gates are much faster and easier to control locally, motivating the solely exchange energy based quantum computation. The control is based on the exponential sensitivity of the exchange energy on the interparticle distance. Manipulation then can proceed, for example, shifting the single particle states electrically or compressing them magnetically. The practical manipulation schemes require quantitative knowledge of the exchange energy. The spin-orbit interaction plays an important role in this nano-system. Indeed the usual exchange interaction changes its magnitude, while a new term, called anisotropic exchange, appears. In this thesis we propose an accurate effective spin Hamiltonian for modeling spin-orbit-induced spin dynamics in the presence of the magnetic field. We have also performed numerically exact calculations of the isotropic and anisotropic exchange coupling in realistic two-electron GaAs coupled quantum dots in the presence of both Dresselhaus and Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit interactions. The numerics allow us to establish the goodness of our model and to see the limits of previous statements. Furthermore we find that in zero magnetic field the second-order spin-orbit effects are absent at all interdot couplings.

Rashba-controlled two-electron spin-charge qubits as building blocks of a quantum computer

Ambrož Kregar, A. Ramšak

The spin-sensitive charge oscillation, controlled by an external magnetic field, was recently proposed as a mechanism of transformations of qubits, defined as two-electron spin-charge Wannier molecules in a square quantum dot.1 The paper expands this idea by including the effects of Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling. The problem is studied theoretically by mapping the system to an analytic effective Hamiltonian for 8 low-energy states, comprising singlet and triplet on each dot diagonal. The validity of mapping is confirmed by comparing the energy and spin of full and mapped system, and also by the reproduction of charge-oscillation dynamics in the presence of magnetic flux. The newly introduced Rashba coupling significantly enriches the system dynamics, affecting the magnitude of charge oscillations and allowing the controlled transitions between singlet and triplet states due to the spin rotations, induced by spin-orbit coupling. The results indicate the possibility for use of the studied system for quantum information processing, while possible extensions of the system to serve as a qubit in a universal quantum computer, fulfilling all five Di Vincenzo criteria, is also discussed.

Two-Qubit Spin Entanglement in Coupled Quantum Dots within Strained Quantum Wells

Pon Subbiah Aravind Raj, Miruthubashni

We investigate spin entanglement in a strained Si/SiGe quantum well hosting two laterally coupled quantum dots separated by ~30 nm. The model incorporates strain-induced band modulation and spin–orbit interactions, with particular emphasis on the interplay between Rashba and Dresselhaus terms. Using a two-electron Hamiltonian framework and evaluating entanglement via Wootters concurrence, we demonstrate that the degree of spin entanglement can be effectively tuned by an external magnetic field and by varying the Ge concentration in the heterostructure. In contrast to conventional GaAs-based systems, our results indicate a pronounced dominance of the Dresselhaus contribution, exceeding the Rashba term by approximately one to two orders of magnitude, consistent with reported behavior in Si/SiGe quantum wells. Furthermore, our result reveals that the operational regime supporting stable two-qubit information exchange remains largely insensitive to inter-dot spacing within the considered range. Our reports highlight the potential of strained silicon platforms for controllable spin-based quantum information processing.

Optically induced spin gates in coupled quantum dots using the electron-hole exchange interaction

Sophia E. Economou, T. L. Reinecke

We propose a fast optically induced two-qubit C-PHASE gate between two resident spins in a pair of coupled quantum dots. An excited bound state which extends over the two dots provides an effective electron-electron exchange interaction. The gate is made possible by the electron-hole exchange interaction, which isolates a single transition in the system. When combined with appropriate single-qubit rotations, this gate generates an entangled state of the two spins.

Theory of Anisotropic Exchange in Laterally Coupled Quantum Dots

Fabio Baruffa, Peter Stano, Jaroslav Fabian

The effects of spin-orbit coupling on the two-electron spectra in lateral coupled quantum dots are investigated analytically and numerically. It is demonstrated that in the absence of magnetic field, the exchange interaction is practically unaffected by spin-orbit coupling, for any interdot coupling, boosting prospects for spin-based quantum computing. The anisotropic exchange appears at finite magnetic fields. A numerically accurate effective spin Hamiltonian for modeling spin-orbit-induced two-electron spin dynamics in the presence of magnetic field is proposed.
