Abstract

We present exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group results for the entanglement entropy of critical spin-1/2 XXZ chains. We find that open boundary conditions induce an alternating term in both the energy density and the entanglement entropy which are approximately proportional, decaying away from the boundary with a power law. The power varies with anisotropy along the critical line and is corrected by a logarithmic factor, which we calculate analytically, at the isotropic point. A heuristic resonating valence bond explanation is suggested.

Boundary Quantum Entanglement of the XXZ Spin Chain with Boundary Impurities

Zhuo Wei, Yupeng Wang

The boundary quantum entanglement for the s = 1/2 XXZ spin chain with boundary impurities is studied via the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. It is shown that the entanglement entropy of the boundary bond (the impurity and the chain spin next to it) behaves differently in different phases. The relationship between the singular points of the boundary entropy and boundary quantum critical points is discussed.

Critical entanglement of XXZ Heisenberg chains with defects

Jize Zhao, Ingo Peschel, Xiaoqun Wang

We study the entanglement properties of anisotropic open spin one-half Heisenberg chains with a modified central bond. The entanglement entropy between the two half-chains is calculated with the density-matrix renormalization method (DMRG). We find a logarithmic behavior with an effective central charge ${c}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ varying with the length of the system. It flows to one in the ferromagnetic region and to zero in the antiferromagnetic region of the model. In the $XX$ case it has a nonuniversal limit and we recover previous results.

Scaling of entanglement entropy at quantum critical points in random spin chains

Prashant Kumar, R. N. Bhatt

We study the scaling properties of entanglement entropy (EE) near the quantum critical points in interacting random antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin chains. Using density-matrix renormalization group, we compute the half-chain EE near the topological phase transition between the Haldane and random singlet phases in a disordered spin-1 chain. It is found to diverge logarithmically in system size with an effective central charge ${c}_{\mathrm{eff}}=1.17(4)$ at the quantum critical point (QCP). Moreover, a scaling analysis of EE yields the correlation length exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}=2.28(5)$. Our unbiased calculation establishes that the QCP is in the universality class of the infinite-randomness fixed point predicted by previous studies based on the strong disorder renormalization group technique. However, in the disordered spin-1/2 Majumdar-Ghosh chain, where a valence bond solid phase is unstable to disorder, the crossover length exponent obtained from a scaling analysis of EE disagrees with the expectation based on the Imry-Ma argument. We provide a possible explanation.

Quantum renormalization of entanglement in an antisymmetric anisotropic and bond-alternating spin system

Xiang Hao

The quantum renormalization group method is applied to study the quantum criticality and entanglement entropy of the ground state of the Ising chain in the presence of antisymmetric anisotropic couplings and alternating exchange interactions. The quantum phase transitions can be characterized by the discontinuity in the second derivative of the energy of the renormalized ground state. A phase diagram is obtained by the critical boundary line. The first derivative of entanglement entropy also diverges at the same critical points after enough iterations of the renormalization of the coupling constants. The antisymmetric anisotropy and alternating interaction can enhance the renormalized entanglement via the creation of quantum fluctuations. The scaling behavior of the derivative of the entropy around the critical points manifests the logarithm dependence on the size of the spin system.

Density-matrix renormalization-group analysis of quantum critical points: Quantum spin chains

Shan-Wen Tsai, John Bradley Marston

We present a simple method, combining the density-matrix renormalization-group algorithm with finite-size scaling, which permits the study of critical behavior in quantum spin chains. Spin moments and dimerization are induced by boundary conditions at the chain ends and these exhibit power-law decay at critical points. Results are presented for the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet; an analytic calculation shows that logarithmic corrections to scaling can sometimes be avoided. We also examine the spin-1 chain at the critical point separating the Haldane gap and dimerized phases. Exponents for the dimer-dimer and the spin-spin correlation functions are consistent with results obtained from bosonization.

Entanglement entropy and fidelity susceptibility in the one-dimensional spin-1 XXZ chains with alternating single-site anisotropy

Jie Ren, Guang-Hua Liu, Wen-Long You

We study the fidelity susceptibility in an antiferromagnetic spin-1 XXZ chain numerically. By using the density-matrix renormalization group method, the effects of the alternating single-site anisotropy D on fidelity susceptibility are investigated. Its relation with the quantum phase transition is analyzed. It is found that the quantum phase transition from the Haldane spin liquid to periodic Néel spin solid can be well characterized by the fidelity. Finite size scaling of fidelity susceptibility shows a power-law divergence at criticality, which indicates the quantum phase transition is of second order. The results are confirmed by the second derivative of the ground-state energy. We also study the relationship between the entanglement entropy, the Schmidt gap and quantum phase transitions. Conclusions drawn from these quantum information observables agree well with each other.
