Abstract

We develop a time-dependent mean-field theory to investigate the released momentum distribution and the released energy of an ultracold Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover after the scattering length has been set to zero by a fast magnetic-field ramp. For a homogeneous gas we analyze the nonequilibrium dynamics of the system as a function of the interaction strength and of the ramp speed. For a trapped gas the theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results.

Momentum Distribution of a Fermi Gas of Atoms in the BCS-BEC Crossover

Cindy A. Regal, Markus Greiner, S. Giorgini +2 more

We observe dramatic changes in the atomic momentum distribution of a Fermi gas in the crossover region between the BCS theory superconductivity and Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of molecules. We study the shape of the momentum distribution and the kinetic energy as a function of interaction strength. The momentum distributions are compared to a mean-field crossover theory, and the kinetic energy is compared to theories for the two weakly interacting limits. This measurement provides a unique probe of pairing in a strongly interacting Fermi gas.

Momentum distribution of a trapped Fermi gas with large scattering length

Luciano Viverit, S. Giorgini, Лев П. Питаевский +1 more

Using a scattering length parametrization of the crossover from a BCS state to a Bose-Einstein condensate as well as the local density approximation for the density profile, we calculate the momentum distribution of a harmonically trapped atomic Fermi gas at zero temperature. Various interaction regimes are considered, including the BCS phase, the unitarity limit, and the molecular regime. We show that the relevant parameter which characterizes the crossover is given by the dimensionless combination ${N}^{1/6}{a/a}_{\mathrm{ho}},$ where N is the number of atoms, a is the scattering length, and ${a}_{\mathrm{ho}}$ is the oscillator length. The width of the momentum distribution is shown to depend in a crucial way on the value and sign of this parameter. Our predictions can be relevant for experiments on ultracold atomic Fermi gases near a Feshbach resonance.

BCS-BEC crossover in an ultracold Fermi gas.

Wei Yi

This thesis summarizes our study on the properties of ultracold Fermions near a Feshbach resonance. The Feshbach resonance allows for a continuous tuning of the interaction strength between the atoms. With this tunability, many properties predicted for the BCS-BEC crossover region in solids can be shown to exist in this ultracold Fermi gas. With the highly controllable parameters and the clean environment in the experiments, the study of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) crossover in ultracold Fermions provides valuable insights to the strongly interacting crossover region, which has never been achieved before in solids. We first examine the properties of 6 Li and 40 K gases. We find that in the unitary region the properties of the system do not depend on the atom species: outside the unitary region, the properties of the system do depend on the scattering properties of the different atom species. We study the dynamics of the ultracold Fermions in the crossover region in response to the variations in the external magnetic field. We find that the response depends on the time scale and the amplitude of the variations; which is in qualitative agreement with the experimental observations. We derive a set of dynamic mean-field equations for a Fermi gas in an arbitrary potential trap near a wide Feshbach resonance. The equations are more general than the local density approximation (LDA), and less demanding computationally as the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes (BdG) equation. We then analyze the solubility of the equations, as well as solve a simplified version of the equations for illustration and for self-consistency check on the assumptions made during the derivation. We systematically study the possible phases for a trapped Fermi gas with population imbalance near a Feshbach resonance. Our results agree qualitatively well with the recent experimental results, and predict the existence of two exotic non-BCS superfluid phases for the strongly interacting gas with population unbalance: the Breached Pair (BP) phase and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. Finally, to guide the experimental efforts in the search of new quantum phases, we propose a detection scheme for the possible exotic phases.

Dynamics of the BCS-BEC Crossover in a Degenerate Fermi Gas

Marzena Hanna Szymańska, Benjamin D. Simons, Keith R. Burnett

We study the short-time dynamics of a degenerate Fermi gas positioned near a Feshbach resonance following an abrupt jump in the atomic interaction resulting from a change of magnetic field. We investigate the dynamics of the condensate order parameter and pair wave function for a range of field strengths. When the jump is sufficient to span the BCS to Bose-Einstein condensation crossover, we show that the rigidity of the momentum distribution precludes any atom-molecule oscillations in the entrance channel dominated resonances observed in 40K and 6Li. Focusing on material parameters tailored to the 40K Feshbach resonance at 202.1 G, we comment on the integrity of the fast sweep projection technique as a vehicle to explore the condensed phase in the crossover region.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation for a superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover

Sadhan K. Adhikari

We introduce a quasianalytic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with beyond mean-field corrections to describe the dynamics of a zero-temperature dilute superfluid Fermi gas in the crossover from the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) regime, where ${k}_{F}|a|⪡1$ with $a$ the $s$-wave scattering length and ${k}_{F}$ the Fermi momentum, through the unitarity limit ${k}_{F}a\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{\infty}$ to the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) regime where ${k}_{F}a>0$. The energy of our model is parametrized using the known asymptotic behavior in the BCS, BEC, and the unitarity limits and is in excellent agreement with accurate Green's-function Monte Carlo calculations. The model generates good results for frequencies of collective breathing oscillations of a trapped Fermi superfluid.

Scattering mechanism of work done on an ultracold Fermi gas by a time-dependent interaction

Mojmír Poprocký, P. Lipavský

We discuss the work done on repulsive ultracold Fermi gas via collisions tuned by a time-dependent magnetic ramp. If the interaction is strengthened during binary collisions, the kinetic energy of atoms increases with each such inelastic event. The net energy transfer via collisions is compared with the transfer via the mean field. It is found that for a weak interaction, with a scattering length shorter than the inverse mean momentum of atoms, the mean field dominates, while for a strong interaction, the majority of energy enters the gas via collisions.
