Abstract

We analyze the full counting statistics (FCS) of the charge transport through the Anderson impurity model (AIM) and similar systems with a single conducting channel. The object of principal interest is the generating function for the cumulants of charge current distribution. We derive an exact analytic formula relating the FCS generating function to the self energy of the system in the presence of the measuring field. We first check that our approach reproduces correctly known results in simple limits, such as the FCS of the resonant level system (AIM without Coulomb interaction). We then proceed to study the FCS for the AIM both perturbatively in the Coulomb interaction and in the Kondo regime at the Toulouse point (we also study a related model of a spinless single-site quantum dot coupled to two half-infinite metallic leads in the Luttinger liquid phase at a special interaction strength). At zero temperature the FCS turns out to be binomial for small voltages. For the generic case of arbitrary energy scales the FCS is shown to be captured very well by generalizations of the Levitov-Lesovik type formula. Surprisingly, the FCS for the AIM indicates a presence of coherent electron pair tunnelling in addition to conventional single-particle processes. By means of perturbative expansions around the Toulouse point we succeeded in showing the universality of the binomial FCS at zero temperature in linear response. Based on our general formula for the FCS we then argue for a more general binomial theorem stating that the linear response zero-temperature FCS for any interacting single-channel setup is always binomial.

Counting statistics for the Anderson impurity model: Bethe ansatz and Fermi liquid study *

Abstract We study the counting statistics of charge transport in the Anderson impurity model (AIM) employing both Keldysh perturbation theory in a Fermi liquid picture and the Bethe ansatz. In the Fermi liquid approach, the object of our principal interest is the generating function for the cumulants of the charge current distribution. We derive an exact analytic formula relating the full counting statistic (FCS) generating function to the self‐energy of the system in the presence of a measuring field. We first check that our approach reproduces correctly known results in simple limits, like the FCS of the resonant level system (AIM without Coulomb interaction). We then proceed to study the FCS for the AIM perturbatively in the Coulomb interaction. By comparing this perturbative analysis with a strong coupling expansion, we arrive at a conjecture for an expression for the FCS generating function at 𝒪( V 3 ) ( V is the voltage across the impurity) valid at all orders in the interaction. In the second part of the article, we examine a Bethe ansatz analysis of the current noise for the AIM. Unlike the Fermi liquid approach, here the goal is to obtain qualitative, not quantitative, results for a wider range of voltages both in and out of a magnetic field. Particularly notable are finite field results showing a double peaked structure in the current noise for voltages satisfying eV ∼ μ B H . This double peaked structure is the “smoking gun” of Kondo physics in the current noise and is directly analogous to the single peak structure predicted in the differential conductance of the AIM.

Full Counting Statistics for the Kondo Dot

A. Komnik, Alexander O. Gogolin

The generating function for the cumulants of charge current distribution is calculated for two generalized Majorana resonant level models: the Kondo dot at the Toulouse point and the resonant level embedded in a Luttinger liquid with the interaction parameter g=1/2. We find that the low-temperature nonequilibrium transport in the Kondo case occurs via tunneling of physical electrons as well as by coherent transmission of electron pairs. We calculate the third cumulant ("skewness") explicitly and analyze it for different couplings, temperatures, and magnetic fields. For the g=1/2 setup the statistics simplifies and is given by a modified version of the Levitov-Lesovik formula.

Numerically exact full counting statistics of the nonequilibrium Anderson impurity model

Michael L. Ridley, Viveka Nand Singh, Emanuel Gull +1 more

The time-dependent full counting statistics of charge transport through an interacting quantum junction is evaluated from its generating function, controllably computed with the inchworm Monte Carlo method. Exact noninteracting results are reproduced; then, we continue to explore the effect of electron-electron interactions on the time-dependent charge cumulants, first-passage time distributions, and $n$-electron transfer distributions. We observe a crossover in the noise from Coulomb blockade to Kondo-dominated physics as the temperature is decreased. In addition, we uncover long-tailed spin distributions in the Kondo regime and analyze queuing behavior caused by correlations between single-electron transfer events.

Full counting statistics in the not-so-long-time limit

Sam T Carr, Peter Schmitteckert, Hubert Saleur

The full counting statistics of charge transport is the probability distribution that n electrons have flown through the system in measuring time t m . The cumulant generating function (CGF) of this distribution has been well studied in the long time limit , however there are relatively few results on the finite measuring time corrections to this. In this work, we study the leading finite time corrections to the CGF of interacting Fermi systems with a single transmission channel at zero temperature but driven out of equilibrium by a bias voltage. We conjecture that the leading finite time corrections are logarithmic in t m with a coefficient universally related to the long time limit. We provide detailed numerical evidence for this with reference to the self-dual interacting resonant level model. This model further contains a phase transition associated with the fractionalization of charge at a critical bias voltage. This transition manifests itself technically as branch points in the CGF. We provide numerical results of the dependence of the CGF on measuring time for model parameters in the vicinity of this transition, and thus identify features in the time evolution associated with the phase transition itself.

Full counting statistics for noninteracting fermions: Exact results and the Levitov-Lesovik formula

Kurt Schönhammer

Exact numerical results for the full counting statistics (FCS) for a one-dimensional tight-binding model of noninteracting electrons are presented without using an idealized measuring device. The two initially separate subsystems are connected at $t=0$ and the exact time evolution for the large but finite combined system is obtained numerically via a finite dimensional determinant. Even for surprisingly short times the approximate description of the time evolution with the help of scattering states agrees well with the exact result for the local current matrix elements and the FCS. An additional approximation has to be made to recover the Levitov-Lesovik formula in the limit where the system size becomes infinite and afterwards the long time limit is addressed. The derivation of the Levitov-Lesovik formula is generalized to more general geometries such as a Y junction enclosing a magnetic flux.

1/(N − 1) expansion approach to full-counting statistics for the SU(N) Anderson model

Akira Oguri, Rui Sakano

We apply a recently developed 1/( N − 1) expansion to the full-counting statistics for the N -fold degenerate Anderson impurity model in the Kondo regime. This approach is based on the perturbation theory in the Coulomb interaction U and is different from the conventional large- N theories, such as the usual 1/ N expansion and non-crossing approximation. We have confirmed that the calculations carried out up to order 1/( N − 1) 2 agree closely with those of the numerical renormalization group at N = 4, where the degeneracy is still not so large. This ensures the applicability of our approach for N ≥ 4. We present the results of the cumulants of the probability distribution function for a nonequilibrium current through a quantum dot in the particle-hole symmetric case.
