Abstract

The time-dependent full counting statistics of charge transport through an interacting quantum junction is evaluated from its generating function, controllably computed with the inchworm Monte Carlo method. Exact noninteracting results are reproduced; then, we continue to explore the effect of electron-electron interactions on the time-dependent charge cumulants, first-passage time distributions, and $n$-electron transfer distributions. We observe a crossover in the noise from Coulomb blockade to Kondo-dominated physics as the temperature is decreased. In addition, we uncover long-tailed spin distributions in the Kondo regime and analyze queuing behavior caused by correlations between single-electron transfer events.

Towards full counting statistics for the Anderson impurity model

Alexander O. Gogolin, A. Komnik

We analyze the full counting statistics (FCS) of the charge transport through the Anderson impurity model (AIM) and similar systems with a single conducting channel. The object of principal interest is the generating function for the cumulants of charge current distribution. We derive an exact analytic formula relating the FCS generating function to the self energy of the system in the presence of the measuring field. We first check that our approach reproduces correctly known results in simple limits, such as the FCS of the resonant level system (AIM without Coulomb interaction). We then proceed to study the FCS for the AIM both perturbatively in the Coulomb interaction and in the Kondo regime at the Toulouse point (we also study a related model of a spinless single-site quantum dot coupled to two half-infinite metallic leads in the Luttinger liquid phase at a special interaction strength). At zero temperature the FCS turns out to be binomial for small voltages. For the generic case of arbitrary energy scales the FCS is shown to be captured very well by generalizations of the Levitov-Lesovik type formula. Surprisingly, the FCS for the AIM indicates a presence of coherent electron pair tunnelling in addition to conventional single-particle processes. By means of perturbative expansions around the Toulouse point we succeeded in showing the universality of the binomial FCS at zero temperature in linear response. Based on our general formula for the FCS we then argue for a more general binomial theorem stating that the linear response zero-temperature FCS for any interacting single-channel setup is always binomial.

Numerically exact full counting statistics of the energy current in the Kondo regime

Michael L. Ridley, Michael Galperin, Emanuel Gull +1 more

We use the inchworm quantum Monte Carlo method to investigate the full counting statistics of particle and energy currents in a strongly correlated quantum dot. Our method is used to extract the heat fluctuations and entropy production of a quantum thermoelectric device, as well as cumulants of the particle and energy currents. The energy-particle current cross correlations reveal information on the preparation of the system and the interplay of thermal and electric currents. We furthermore demonstrate the signature of a crossover from Coulomb blockade to Kondo physics in the energy current fluctuations, and show how the conventional master equation approach to full counting statistics systematically fails to capture this crossover.

Numerically exact long-time magnetization dynamics at the nonequilibrium Kondo crossover of the Anderson impurity model

Guy Cohen, Emanuel Gull, David R. Reichman +2 more

We investigate the dynamical and steady-state spin response of the nonequilibrium Anderson model to magnetic fields, bias voltage, and temperature using a numerically exact method combining a bold-line quantum Monte Carlo technique with a memory function formalism. We obtain converged results in a range of previously inaccessible regimes, in particular calculating the spin dynamics for a range of temperatures down to the crossover to the Kondo domain. We provide predictions for nonequilibrium phenomena, including nonmonotonic temperature dependence of observables at high bias voltage and oscillatory quench dynamics at high magnetic fields.

Revealing strong correlations in higher-order transport statistics: A noncrossing approximation approach

André Erpenbeck, Emanuel Gull, Guy Cohen

We present a method for calculating the full counting statistics of a nonequilibrium quantum system based on the propagator noncrossing approximation (NCA). This numerically inexpensive method can provide higher-order cumulants for extended parameter regimes, rendering it attractive for a wide variety of purposes. We compare NCA results to Born-Markov quantum master equations (QME) results to show that they can access different physics, and to numerically exact inchworm quantum Monte Carlo data to assess their validity. As a demonstration of its power, the NCA method is employed to study the impact of correlations on higher-order cumulants in the nonequilibrium Anderson impurity model. The four lowest-order cumulants are examined, allowing us to establish that correlation effects have a profound influence on the underlying transport distributions. Higher-order cumulants are therefore demonstrated to be a proxy for the presence of Kondo correlations in a way that cannot be captured by simple QME methods.

Full counting statistics for SU( N ) impurity Anderson model

Rui Sakano, Akira Oguri, Takeo Kato +1 more

We analyze the full counting statistics of the multiorbital Kondo effect in a quantum dot with SU($N$) symmetry in the framework of renormalized perturbation theory. The current probability distribution function is calculated for an arbitrary dot-site Coulomb repulsion $U$ in the particle-hole-symmetric case. The resulting cumulant up to the leading nonlinear term of applied bias voltages indicates two types of electron transfer, respectively carrying charge $e$ and $2e$, with different $N$ dependences. The cross correlation between different orbital currents shows exponential enhancement with respect to $U$, which directly addresses the formation of the orbital-singlet state.

1/(N − 1) expansion approach to full-counting statistics for the SU(N) Anderson model

Akira Oguri, Rui Sakano

We apply a recently developed 1/( N − 1) expansion to the full-counting statistics for the N -fold degenerate Anderson impurity model in the Kondo regime. This approach is based on the perturbation theory in the Coulomb interaction U and is different from the conventional large- N theories, such as the usual 1/ N expansion and non-crossing approximation. We have confirmed that the calculations carried out up to order 1/( N − 1) 2 agree closely with those of the numerical renormalization group at N = 4, where the degeneracy is still not so large. This ensures the applicability of our approach for N ≥ 4. We present the results of the cumulants of the probability distribution function for a nonequilibrium current through a quantum dot in the particle-hole symmetric case.

We analyze the full counting statistics of the multiorbital Kondo effect in a quantum dot with SU(NNN) symmetry in the framework of renormalized perturbation theory.
