Abstract

We present a novel mechanism for the appearance of magnetization plateaus in quasi-one-dimensional quantum spin systems, which is induced by the coupling to the underlying lattice. We investigate in detail a simple model of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to adiabatic phonons under an external magnetic field, but the present mechanism is expected to be more general. Using field theoretic methods complemented by extensive density matrix renormalization group techniques, we show that magnetization plateaus at nontrivial rational values of the magnetization can be stabilized by the lattice coupling. We suggest that such a scenario could be relevant for some low dimensional frustrated spin-Peierls compounds.

Frustration-induced plateaus in S≥12 Heisenberg spin ladders

Frédéric Michaud, Tommaso Coletta, Salvatore R. Manmana +2 more

We study the $T=0$ magnetization of frustrated two-leg spin ladders with arbitrary value of the spin $S$. In the strong-rung limit, we use degenerate perturbation theory to prove that frustration leads to magnetization plateaus at fractional values of the magnetization for all spins $S$ and to determine the critical ratios of parallel to diagonal inter-rung couplings for the appearance of these plateaus. These ratios depend both on the plateau and on the spin. To confirm these results and to investigate the properties of these ladders away from the strong-coupling limit, we have performed extensive density-matrix renormalization-group calculations for $S\ensuremath{\le}2$. For large enough inter-rung couplings, all plateaus simply disappear, leading to a magnetization curve typical of integer-spin chains in a magnetic field. The intermediate region turns out to be surprisingly rich however, with, upon increasing the inter-rung couplings, the development of magnetization jumps and, in some cases, the appearance of one or more phase transitions inside a given plateau.

Unconventional magnetization plateaus in a Shastry-Sutherland spin tube

Salvatore R. Manmana, Jean-David Picon, Kai Phillip Schmidt +1 more

Using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and perturbative continuous unitary transformations (PCUTs), we study the magnetization process in a magnetic field for all coupling strengths of a quasi-1D version of the 2D Shastry-Sutherland lattice, a frustrated spin tube made of two orthogonal dimer chains. At small inter-dimer coupling, plateaus in the magnetization appear at 1/6, 1/4, 1/3, 3/8, and 1/2. As in 2D, they correspond to a Wigner crystal of triplons. However, close to the boundary of the product singlet phase, plateaus of a new type appear at 1/5 and 3/4. They are stabilized by the localization of bound states of triplons. Their magnetization profile differs significantly from that of single-triplon plateaus and leads to specific NMR signatures. We address the possibility to stabilize such plateaus in further geometries by analyzing small finite clusters using exact diagonalizations and the PCUTs.

Ground state properties of antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg systems in external fields

Andreas Fledderjohann

The present work investigates the influence of external perturbations on the ground states of spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains and two-dimensional spin lattices. The lifting of the well-known zero-energy excitations (soft modes) of the unperturbed Heisenberg chain due to suitably chosen periodicities of applied perturbations is presented. The evolution of excitation energies and transition matrix elements is described by a complete set of differential equations and scaling solutions for small perturbations are discussed. A variety of topic quasi-one-dimensional spin systems (spin-Peierls chain, spin ladders in different geometries) are then embedded in the descriptive scheme of periodically perturbed Heisenberg chains. In particular, the energy gaps and, most noticeable, the formation of magnetization plateaus occurring in these systems are discussed in a single prediction scheme related to the soft mode positions of the previously unperturbed chain. Plateaus due to various kinds of perturbations are furthermore shown to be observable in static correlation functions of the perturbed chain. Particular emphasis is laid on the consideration of processes of spontaneous breaking of symmetry. The latter aspect is discussed for translationally invariant perturbations that do not provide an explicit change of the periodicity of the spin system. The presented investigations finally turn to two-dimensional spin systems first addressing the formation of a non-zero staggered magnetization (long range order) for increased two-dimensionality in terms of a translationally invariant perturbed (helical) spin system. Finally, first stages of a present study on the formation of magnetization plateaus in square spin lattices with frustrating diagonal couplings are given.

Quasi-Spin Correlations in a Frustrated Quantum Spin Ladder

Takanori Sugimoto, Michiyasu Mori, Takami Tohyama +1 more

The quasi-spin correlations in a frustrated quantum spin ladder with one-half magnetization are theoretically studied by using the density-matrix renormalization-group method and the quasi- spin transformation. In this model, the frustration induces a gapless-to-gapful phase transition with a strong rung coupling. The gapful state is observed as the one-half magnetization plateau in the magnetization curve. In the magnetization-plateau state, we find that the quasi-spin dimer has a large expectation value with long-ranged correlations. This result does not only comes in useful to clarify the magnetization-plateau state, but gives a crucial information to understand the magnetization curve of the real compound BiCu2PO6, whose effective spin model corresponds to ours.

Condensation of magnons and spinons in a frustrated ladder

J.-B. Fouet, Frédéric Mila, D. Clarke +4 more

Motivated by the ever-increasing experimental effort devoted to the properties of frustrated quantum magnets in a magnetic field, we present a careful and detailed theoretical analysis of a one-dimensional version of this problem, a frustrated ladder with a magnetization plateau at $m=1∕2$. We show that even for purely isotropic Heisenberg interactions, the magnetization curve exhibits a rather complex behavior that can be fully accounted for in terms of simple elementary excitations. The introduction of anisotropic interactions (e.g., Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions) modifies significantly the picture and reveals an essential difference between integer and fractional plateaus. In particular, anisotropic interactions generically open a gap in the region between the plateaus, but we show that this gap closes upon entering fractional plateaus. All of these conclusions, based on analytical arguments, are supported by extensive density matrix renormalization group calculations.

Magnetization plateaus in the spin- 12 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a kagome-strip chain

Katsuhiro Morita, Takanori Sugimoto, Shigetoshi Sota +1 more

The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on a kagome lattice is a typical frustrated quantum spin system. The basic structure of a kagome lattice is also present in the kagome-strip lattice in one dimension, where a similar type of frustration is expected. We thus study the magnetization plateaus of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on a kagome-strip chain with three-independent antiferromagnetic exchange interactions using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. In a certain range of exchange parameters, we find twelve kinds of magnetization plateaus, nine of which have magnetic structures breaking translational and/or reflection symmetry spontaneously. The structures are classified by an array of five-site unit cells with specific bond-spin correlations. In a case with a nontrivial plateau, namely a 3/10 plateau, we find long-period magnetic structure with a period of four unit cells.
