Abstract

Motivated by the recent discovery of the spin tube $[{(\mathrm{Cu}{\mathrm{Cl}}_{2}\mathrm{tach}\mathrm{H})}_{3}\mathrm{Cl}]{\mathrm{Cl}}_{2}$, we investigate the properties of a frustrated three-leg spin tube with antiferromagnetic intra- and inter-ring couplings. We pay special attention to the evolution of the properties from weak to strong inter-ring coupling and show on the basis of extensive density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization calculations that the system undergoes a first-order phase transition between a dimerized gapped phase at weak coupling that can be described by the usual spin-chirality model and a gapless critical phase at strong coupling that can be described by an effective spin-$3∕2$ model. We also show that there is a magnetization plateau at $1∕3$ in the whole gapped phase and slightly beyond. The implications for $[{(\mathrm{Cu}{\mathrm{Cl}}_{2}\mathrm{tach}\mathrm{H})}_{3}\mathrm{Cl}]{\mathrm{Cl}}_{2}$ are discussed, with the conclusion that this system behaves essentially as a spin-$3∕2$ chain.

Quantum spin nanotubes—frustration, competing orders and criticalities

Tôru Sakai, Masahiro Sato, Kiyomi Okamoto +2 more

Recent developments of theoretical studies on spin nanotubes are reviewed, especially focusing on the S = 1/2 three-leg spin tube. In contrast to the three-leg spin ladder, the tube has a spin gap in the case of the regular-triangle unit cell when the rung interaction is sufficiently large. The effective theory based on the Hubbard Hamiltonian indicates a quantum phase transition to a gapless spin liquid due to the lattice distortion to an isosceles triangle. This is also supported by the numerical diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group analyses. Furthermore, combining analytical and numerical approaches, we reveal several novel magnetic-field-induced phenomena: Néel, dimer, chiral and/or inhomogeneous orders, a new mechanism for the magnetization plateau formation, and others. The recently synthesized spin tube materials are also briefly introduced.

Combined analytical and numerical approach to magnetization plateaux in one-dimensional spin tube antiferromagnets

Xavier Plat, Sylvain Capponi, Pierre Pujol

In this paper, we investigate the properties of frustrated three-leg spin-$S$ tubes under a magnetic field. We concentrate on two kind of geometries for these tubes, one of which is relevant for the compound $[{({\mathrm{CuCl}}_{2}\mathrm{tachH})}_{3}\mathrm{Cl}]{\mathrm{Cl}}_{2}$. We perform an analytical large-$S$ path-integral approach to determine the phase diagrams, which exhibit several magnetization plateaux. Moreover, by combining the field-theory approach with a strong-coupling one, we also investigate the issue of gapless nonmagnetic excitations on some plateaux, dubbed chirality degrees of freedom for both tubes: on increasing the intertriangle exchange couplings, a gapless chiral phase transforms into a gapped ``ferrochiral'' state, possibly through intermediate ``spin-imbalanced'' states. All these predictions are confirmed numerically using large-scale density-matrix renormalization-group simulations for the $S=3/2$ case.

Spin-chirality separation and S3 symmetry breaking in the magnetization plateau of the quantum spin tube

Kouichi Okunishi, Masahiro Sato, Tôru Sakai +2 more

We study the magnetization plateau state of the three-leg spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ tube in the strong rung coupling region, where ${S}_{3}$ symmetry breaking and the low-energy chirality degree of freedom play crucial roles. On the basis of the effective chirality model and density matrix renormalization group, we clarify that, as the leg coupling increases, the chirality liquid with gapless nonmagnetic excitations, the spin-imbalance phase, and the vector-spin-chirality ordered phase emerge without closing the plateau spin gap. The relevance of these results to experiments is also discussed.

Quantum phase transitions in 1/3 plateau of the quantum spin tube

Kouichi Okunishi, Masahiro Sato, Tôru Sakai +2 more

We study quantum phase transitions in the 1/3 plateau state of the three-leg spin-1/2 tube, where the low-energy effective chirality degree of freedom plays an essential role. Using the density matrix renormalization group and the effective chirality model, we find that, as the leg coupling increases, the chirality liquid, a novel spin imbalance phase and the vector-spin-chirality ordered phase emerge without closing the plateau spin gap. We also clarify the role of the S 3-symmetry of the spin tube, behind these quantum phase transitions.

Low-energy effective theory and two distinct critical phases in a spin- 12 frustrated three-leg spin tube

Yang Zhao, Shou-Shu Gong, Yongjun Wang +1 more

Motivated by the crystal structures of [(CuCl${}_{2}$tachH)${}_{3}$Cl]Cl${}_{2}$ and Ca${}_{3}$Co${}_{2}$O${}_{6}$, we develop a low-energy effective theory using the bosonization technique for a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ frustrated three-leg spin tube with trigonal prism units in two limit cases. The features obtained with the effective theory are numerically elucidated by the density matrix renormalization group method. Three different quantum phases in the ground state of the system, say, one gapped dimerized phase and two distinct gapless phases, are identified, where the two gapless phases are found to have the conformal central charge $c=1$ and $\frac{3}{2}$, respectively. Spin gaps, spin and dimer correlation functions, and the entanglement entropy are obtained. In particular, it is disclosed that the critical phase with $c=\frac{3}{2}$ is the consequence of spin frustrations, which might belong to the SU(2)${}_{k=2}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten-Novikov universality class, and is induced by the twist term in the bosonized Hamiltonian density.

Quantum phases of a frustrated four-leg spin tube

Marcelo Arlego, W. Brenig, Yousef Rahnavard +3 more

We study the ground-state phase diagram of a frustrated spin-1/2 four-leg tube. Using a variety of complementary techniques, namely, density matrix renormalization group, exact diagonalization, Schwinger boson mean-field theory, quantum Monte Carlo, and series expansion, we explore the parameter space of this model in the regime of all-antiferromagnetic exchange. In contrast to unfrustrated four-leg tubes, we uncover a rich phase diagram. Apart from the Luttinger liquid fixed point in the limit of decoupled legs, this comprises several gapped ground states, namely, a plaquette, an incommensurate, and an antiferromagnetic quasispin-2 chain phase. The transitions between these phases are analyzed in terms of total energy and static structure factor calculations and are found to be of (weak) first order. Despite the absence of long-range order in the quantum case, remarkable similarities to the classical phase diagram are uncovered, with the exception of the icommensurate regime, which is strongly renormalized by quantum fluctuations. In the limit of large leg exchange, the tube exhibits a deconfinement crossover from gapped magnon-like excitations to spinons.
