We calculate the spin stiffness ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}}}_{\mathit{s}}$ for the frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice by exact diagonalizations on finite clusters of up to 36 sites followed by extrapolations to the thermodynamic limit. For the nonfrustrated case, we find that ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\rho}}}_{\mathit{s}}$=(0.183\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.003)
J1, in excellent agreement with the best results obtained by other means. Turning on frustration, the extrapolated stiffness vanishes for 0.4\ensuremath{\lesssim}
J2/
J1\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.6. In this intermediate region, the finite-size scaling works poorly---an additional sign that there is neither N\'eel nor collinear magnetic order. Using a hydrodynamic relation, and previous results for the transverse susceptibility, we also estimate the spin-wave velocity in the N\'eel-ordered region.
Abstract. We studied the thermodynamics of the one-dimensional J1-J2 spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain for ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor bonds J1 < 0 and frustrating antiferromagnetic nextnearest-neighbor bonds J2> 0 using full diagonalization of finite rings and a second-order Green-function formalism. Thereby we focus on J2 < |J1|/4 where the ground state is still ferromagnetic, but the frustration influences the thermodynamic properties. We found that their critical indices are not changed by J2. The analysis of the low-temperature behavior of the susceptibility χ leads to the conclusion that this behavior changes from χ ∝ T −2 at J2 < |J1|/4 to χ ∝ T −3/2 at the quantum-critical point J2 = |J1|/4. Another effect of the frustration is the appearance of an extra low-T maximum in the specific heat Cv(T) for J2 |J1|/8, indicating its strong influence on the low-energy spectrum. Introduction: In low-dimensional frustrated quantum magnets thermal and quantum fluctuations strongly influence the low-temperature physics [1,2]. Special attention has been paid to one-dimensional (1D) J1-J2 quantum Heisenberg magnets, see Ref. [3] and references therein. Recent experimental studies have shown that edge-shared chain cuprates, such as LiVCuO4, Li(Na)Cu2O2, Li2ZrCuO4, and Li2CuO2 [4–13], represent a family of quantum magnets for
Using the coupled cluster method for high orders of approximation and complementary exact diagonalization studies we investigate the ground state properties of the spin-1/2
J1−−J2 frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice. We have calculated the ground state energy, the magnetic order parameter, the spin stiffness, and several generalized susceptibilities to probe magnetically disordered quantum valence-bond phases. We have found that the quantum critical points for both the N\'eel and collinear orders are ${J}_{2}^{c1}\ensuremath{\approx}(0.44\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01){J}_{1}$ and ${J}_{2}^{c2}\ensuremath{\approx}(0.59\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01){J}_{1}$, respectively, which are in good agreement with the results obtained by other approximations. In contrast to the recent study by [Sirker et al. Phys. Rev. B 73, 184420 (2006)], our data do not provide evidence for the transition from the N\'eel to the valence-bond solid state to be first order. Moreover, our results are in favor of the deconfinement scenario for that phase transition. We also discuss the nature of the magnetically disordered quantum phase.
The thermodynamics of coupled frustrated ferromagnetic chains is studied within a spin-rotation-invariant Green's-function approach. We consider an isotropic Heisenberg spin-half system with a ferromagnetic in-chain coupling
J1<0 between nearest neighbors and a frustrating antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor in-chain coupling
J2>0. We focus on the moderate strength of frustration
J2<∣J1∣/4 such that the in-chain spin-spin correlations are predominantly ferromagnetic. We consider two interchain couplings (ICs) ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},y}$ and ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},z}$, corresponding to the two axes perpendicular to the chain, where ferromagnetic as well as antiferromagnetic ICs are taken into account. We discuss the influence of frustration on the ground-state properties for antiferromagnetic ICs, where the ground state is of a quantum nature. The major part of our study is devoted to the finite-temperature properties. We calculate the critical temperature
Tc as a function of the competing exchange couplings ${J}_{2},{J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},y},{J}_{\ensuremath{\perp},z}$. We find that for fixed ICs,
Tc decreases monotonically with increasing frustration
J2, where as ${J}_{2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}|{J}_{1}|/4$ the
Tc(J2) curve drops down rapidly. To characterize the magnetic ordering below and above
Tc, we calculate the spin-spin correlation functions $\ensuremath{\langle}{\mathbf{S}}_{0}{\mathbf{S}}_{\mathbf{R}}\ensuremath{\rangle}$, the magnetic order parameter
M, the uniform static susceptibility ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{0}$, as well as the correlation length $\ensuremath{\xi}$. Moreover, we discuss the specific heat
CV and the temperature dependence of the excitation spectrum ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{\mathbf{q}}$. As ${J}_{2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}|{J}_{1}|/4$, some unusual frustration-induced features were found, such as an increase of the in-chain spin stiffness (in the case of ferromagnetic ICs) or of the in-chain spin-wave velocity (in the case of antiferromagnetic ICs) with growing temperature.
We apply the plaquette renormalization scheme of tensor network states [Phys. Rev. E 83, 056703 (2011)] to study the spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg
J1-
J2 model on an $L\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}L$ square lattice with
L = 8, 16, and 32. By treating tensor elements as variational parameters, we obtain the ground states for different
J2/J1 values, and investigate staggered magnetizations, nearest-neighbor spin-spin correlations, and plaquette order parameters. In addition to the well-known N\'eel order and collinear order at low and high
J2/J1, we observe a plaquettelike order at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\approx}0.5$. A continuous transition between the N\'eel order and the plaquettelike order near ${J}_{2}^{{c}_{1}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.40{J}_{1}$ is observed. The collinear order emerges at ${J}_{2}^{{c}_{2}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.62{J}_{1}$ through a first-order phase transition.
We study the ground-state properties of the two-dimensional spin-1/2 ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice, within diagrammatic approximations using an auxiliary-fermion formulation with exact projection. In a first approximation, we assume a phenomenological width of the pseudofermion spectral function to calculate the magnetization, susceptibilities, and the spin-correlation length within random-phase approximation, demonstrating the appearance of a paramagnetic phase between the N\'eel-ordered and Collinear-ordered phases, at sufficiently large pseudofermion damping. Second we use a functional renormalization-group formulation. We find that the conventional truncation scheme omitting three-particle and higher-order vertices is not sufficient. We therefore include self-energy renormalizations in the single-scale propagator as recently proposed by Katanin, to preserve Ward identities in a better way. We find N\'eel order at $g={J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}{g}_{\text{c}1}\ensuremath{\approx}0.4\dots{}0.45$ and Collinear order at $g\ensuremath{\gtrsim}{g}_{\text{c}2}\ensuremath{\approx}0.66\dots{}0.68$, which is in good agreement with results obtained by numerical studies. In the intervening quantum paramagnetic phase, we find enhanced columnar dimer and plaquette fluctuations of equal strength.
