Abstract

By means of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, the magnetic properties of the J-J-J$^{\prime}$ quantum Heisenberg chains with spin $S=1/2$, 1, 3/2 and 2 in the ground states are investigated in the presence of a magnetic field. Two different cases are considered: (a) when $J$ is antiferromagnetic and $J^{\prime}$ is ferromagnetic (i.e. the AF-AF-F chain), the system is a ferrimagnet. The plateaus of the magnetization are observed. It is found that the width of the plateaus decreases with increasing the ferromagnetic coupling, and disappears when $% J^{\prime}/J$ passes over a critical value. The saturated field is observed to be independent of the ferromagnetic coupling; (b) when $J$ is ferromagnetic and $J^{\prime}$ is antiferromagnetic (i.e. the F-F-AF chain), the system becomes an antiferromagnet. The plateaus of the magnetization are also seen. The width of the plateaus decreases with decreasing the antiferromagnetic coupling, and disappears when $J^{\prime}/J $ passes over a critical value. Though the ground state properties are quite different, the magnetization plateaus in both cases tend to disappear when the ferromagnetic coupling becomes more dominant. Besides, no fundamental difference between the systems with spin half-integer and integer has been found.

Magnetism and thermodynamics of spin- 1∕2 Heisenberg diamond chains in a magnetic field

Bo Gu, Gang Su

The magnetic and thermodynamic properties of spin-$1∕2$ Heisenberg diamond chains are investigated in three different cases: (a) ${J}_{1}$, ${J}_{2}$, ${J}_{3}>0$ (frustrated), (b) ${J}_{1}$, ${J}_{3}<0$, ${J}_{2}>0$ (frustrated), and (c) ${J}_{1}$, ${J}_{2}>0$, ${J}_{3}<0$ (nonfrustrated), where the bond coupling ${J}_{i}$ $(i=1,2,3)>0$ stands for an antiferromagnetic (AF) interaction, and $<0$ for a ferromagnetic (F) interaction. The density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) technique is invoked to study the properties of the system in the ground state, while the transfer-matrix renormalization-group (TMRG) technique is applied to explore the thermodynamic properties. The local magnetic moments, spin-correlation functions, and static structure factors are discussed in the ground state for the three cases. It is shown that the static structure factor $S(q)$ shows peaks at wave vectors $q=a\ensuremath{\pi}∕3$ $(a=0,1,2,3,4,5)$ for different couplings in a zero magnetic field, which, however, in the magnetic fields where the magnetization plateau with $m=1∕6$ pertains, exhibits the peaks only at $q=0$, $2\ensuremath{\pi}∕3$, and $4\ensuremath{\pi}∕3$, which are found to be couplings independent. The DMRG results of the zero-field static structure factor can be nicely fitted by a linear superposition of six modes, where two fitting equations are proposed. It is observed that the six modes are closely related to the low-lying excitations of the system. At finite temperatures, the magnetization, susceptibility, and specific heat show various behaviors for different couplings. The double-peak structures of the susceptibility, and specific heat against temperature are obtained, where the peak positions and heights are found to depend on the competition of the couplings. It is also uncovered that the $XXZ$ anisotropy of F and AF couplings leads the system of case (c) to display quite different behaviors. In addition, the experimental data of the susceptibility, specific heat, and magnetization for the compound ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{3}{(\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{O}}_{3})}_{2}{(\mathrm{O}\mathrm{H})}_{2}$ are fairly compared with our TMRG results.

Breakdown of intermediate one-half magnetization plateau of spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg and Heisenberg branched chains at triple and Kosterlitz-Thouless critical points

Katarína Karľová, Jozef Strečka, M. L. Lyra

The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg branched chain composed of regularly alternating Ising spins and Heisenberg dimers involving an additional side branching is rigorously solved in a magnetic field by the transfer-matrix approach. The ground-state phase diagram, the magnetization process and the concurrence measuring a degree of bipartite entanglement within the Heisenberg dimers are examined in detail. Three different ground states were found depending on a mutual interplay between the magnetic field and two different coupling constants: the modulated quantum antiferromagnetic phase, the quantum ferrimagnetic phase, and the classical ferromagnetic phase. Two former quantum ground states are manifested in zero-temperature magnetization curves as intermediate plateaus at zero and one-half of the saturation magnetization, whereas the one-half plateau disappears at a triple point induced by a strong-enough ferromagnetic Ising coupling. The ground-state phase diagram and zero-temperature magnetization curves of the analogous spin-1/2 Heisenberg branched chain were investigated using density-matrix renormalization group calculations. The latter fully quantum Heisenberg model involves, besides two gapful phases manifested as zero and one-half magnetization plateaus, gapless quantum spin-liquid phase. The intermediate one-half plateau of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg branched chain vanishes at Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum critical point between gapful and gapless quantum ground states unlike the triple point of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg branched chain.

Magnetization properties of some quantum spin ladders

Kunj Tandon, Siddhartha Lal, Swapan Kumar Pati +2 more

The experimental realization of various spin ladder systems has prompted their detailed theoretical investigations. Here we study the evolution of ground-state magnetization with an external magnetic field for two different antiferromagnetic systems: a three-legged spin-$1/2$ ladder, and a two-legged spin-$1/2$ ladder with an additional diagonal interaction. The finite system density-matrix renormalization-group method is employed for numerical studies of the three-chain system, and an effective low-energy Hamiltonian is used in the limit of strong interchain coupling to study the two- and three-chain systems. The three-chain system has a magnetization plateau at one-third of the saturation magnetization. The two-chain system has a plateau at zero magnetization due to a gap above the singlet ground state. It also has a plateau at half of the saturation magnetization for a certain range of values of the couplings. We study the regions of transitions between plateaus numerically and analytically, and find that they are described, at first order in a strong-coupling expansion, by an $\mathrm{XXZ}$ spin-$1/2$ chain in a magnetic field; the second-order terms give corrections to the $\mathrm{XXZ}$ model. We also study numerically some low-temperature properties of the three-chain system, such as the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat.

Thermodynamics of spin- 1 ∕ 2 antiferromagnet-antiferromagnet-ferromagnet and ferromagnet-ferromagnet-antiferromagnet trimerized quantum Heisenberg chains

Bo Gu, Gang Su, Song Wei Gao

The magnetization process, the susceptibility, and the specific heat of the spin-$1∕2$ antiferromagnet (AF)-AF-ferromagnet (F) and F-F-AF trimerized quantum Heisenberg chains have been investigated by means of the transfer matrix renormalization group (TMRG) technique as well as the modified spin-wave (MSW) theory. A magnetization plateau at $m=1∕6$ for both trimerized chains is observed at low temperature. The susceptibility and the specific heat show various behaviors for different ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions and in different magnetic fields. The TMRG results of susceptibility and the specific heat can be nicely fitted by a linear superposition of double two-level systems, where two fitting equations are proposed. Three branch excitations, one gapless excitation and two gapful excitations, for both systems are found within the MSW theory. It is observed that the MSW theory captures the main characteristics of the thermodynamic behaviors at low temperatures. The TMRG results are also compared with the possible experimental data.

Magnetization plateaus, Haldane-like gap, string order, and hidden symmetry in a spin- 12 tetrameric Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain

Shou-Shu Gong, Gang Su

The ground-state properties of a spin $S=1/2$ tetrameric Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with alternating couplings ${\text{AF}}_{1}{\text{-AF}}_{2}{\text{-AF}}_{1}\text{-F}$ (AF and F denote antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic couplings, respectively) are studied by means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method. Two plateaus of magnetization $m$ are found at $m=0$ and 1/4. It is shown that in such a spin-1/2 AF system, there is a gap from the singlet ground state to the triplet excited states in the absence of a magnetic field. The spin-spin correlation function decays exponentially, and the gapped states have a nonvanishing string order, which measures a hidden symmetry in the system. By a dual transformation, the string order is transformed into a ferromagnetic order and the hidden symmetry is unveiled to be a ${Z}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}$ discrete symmetry, which is fully broken in the gapped states. This half-integer spin Heisenberg AF chain is in a Haldane-like phase suggesting that the present findings extend the substance of Haldane's scenario. A valence-bond-solid state picture is also proposed for the gapped states.

Analytical and Numerical Studies of Quantum Plateau State in One Alternating Heisenberg Chain

Jianjun Jiang, Yongjun Liu, Fei Tang +2 more

By using the coupled cluster method and the numerical density matrix renormalization group method, we investigate the properties of the quantum plateau state in an alternating Heisenberg spin chain. In the absence of a magnetic field, the results obtained from the coupled cluster method and density matrix renormalization group method both show that the ground state of the alternating chain is a gapped dimerized state when the parameter α exceeds a critical point α c . The value of the critical points can be determined precisely by a detailed investigation of the behavior of the spin gap. The system therefore possesses an m = 0 plateau state in the presence of a magnetic field when α > α c . In addition to the m = 0 plateau state, the results of density matrix renormalization group indicate that there is an m = 1/4 plateau state that occurs between two critical fields in the alternating chain if α > 1. The mechanism for the m = 1/4 plateau state and the critical behavior of the magnetization as one approaches this plateau state are also discussed.
